DA-9102 isolated from Actinidia arguta is a candidate of natural medicine currently under Phase II clinical trial for atopic dermatitis in Korea. In this study, spontaneous dermatitis was induced by magnesium deficiency in hairless rats and this system was applied to assess the suppressive effects of DA-9102 on atopic dermatitis-like skin disease. A reproducible increase in transmission of infrared light was observed during spontaneous seizure-like events (SLEs) induced by low Mg2+ solutions in combined rat entorhinal cortex-hippocampal slices. BACKGROUND: Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis is a rare autosomal recessive renal disease characterized by tubular disorders at the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and associated risk factors of hypomagnesemia in pediatric intensive care unit on admission in a developing country.
METHODS: It is a retrospective chart review of 179 children aged 1 mo - 15yr admitted in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of our university during 18 months and recorded serum Mg level on admission. Torsades de pointes is a polymorphic ventricular tachycardia that displays a unique electrocardiographic feature of twisting of the mean electrical axis of QRS complexes around an isoelectric line on the surface electrocardiogram. It is associated with long QT syndrome and has many precipitating mechanisms, etiologic factors, and treatment options. This report presents a case of torsades de pointes that was precipitated by multiple factors and required many treatment modalities. The patient in this case exhibited features of both congenital and acquired types of long QT syndrome.

Magnesium-dependent hypocalcaemia (HSH), a rare inherited disease, is caused by selective disorders of magnesium absorption. Both X-linked and autosomal recessive modes of inheritance have been reported for HSH; this suggests a genetically heterogeneous condition. A balanced de novo t(X;9)(p22;q12) translocation has been reported in a female manifesting hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia. In a lymphoblastoid cell line, derived from this patient, the normal X chromosome is preferentially inactivated, suggesting that the patient's phenotype is caused by disruption of an HSH gene in Xp22.
