BACKGROUND: Biofilms are dense aggregates of surface adherent microorganisms embedded in a polysaccharide matrix. Intravenous iron and heparin are thought to promote the formation of biofilm. Both are commonly employed during hemodialysis treatments which might affect the incidence of catheter-related sepsis.
METHODS: 559 patients who underwent hemodialysis treatment with a catheter were reviewed. Episodes of sepsis were analyzed for the use of systemic heparin and intravenous iron as well as all other risk factors for sepsis.

Treatment employing cyclophosphamide and prednisone has improved prognosis, but relapses and treatment-induced side effects still cause severe morbidity and frequent mortality. BACKGROUND: Citrate anticoagulation is an excellent alternative to heparin anticoagulation for patients at high risk of bleeding requiring continuous renal replacement therapy. However, citrate anticoagulation has some potential adverse effects such as metabolic alkalosis and acidosis, hypernatremia, hypo- and hypercalcemia. BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine whether bezafibrates have adverse effects on renal function.
METHODS: (1) A 3-year retrospective survey of 526 patients who were on bezafibrate for a while and 614 controls following fluctuations of serum creatinine levels. (2) A prospective study on 33 patients with previous evidence of bezafibrate-induced elevation in serum creatinine. The patients were examined after 3 months on bezafibrate 400 mg/day and then after 3 months without bezafibrate. Eight patients repeated the tests after 3 months on bezafibrate 200 mg/day.
