A measurement and modelling investigation of the indoor air chemistry following cooking activities.

Domestic cooking is a source of indoor air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can impact on indoor air quality. However, the real-time VOC emissions from cooking are not well characterised, and similarly, the resulting secondary chemistry is poorly understood. Here, selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) was used to monitor the real-time VOC emissions during the cooking of a scripted chicken and vegetable stir-fry meal, in a room scale, semi-realistic environment. The VOC emissions were dominated by alcohols (70% of total emission), but also contained a

Distribution and treatment needs of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Bangladesh: A Bayesian geostatistical analysis of 2017-2020 national survey data.

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, preventive chemotherapy targeting soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in school-age children has been implemented since 2008. To evaluate the success of this strategy, surveys were conducted between 2017 and 2020 in 10 out of 64 districts. We estimate the geographic distribution of STH infections by species at high spatial resolution, identify risk factors, and estimate treatment needs at different population subgroups. METHODOLOGY: Bayesian geostatistical models were fitted to prevalence data of each STH species. Climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic pr

Risk assessment of parasites in Norwegian drinking water: opportunities and challenges.

Despite the relative prosperity of Scandinavian countries, contamination of the drinking water supply with parasites has occurred on various occasions in the last few decades. These events have resulted in outbreaks of disease involving several thousand cases and/or the necessity for implementation of boil-water advisories. Against this background, in 2008, and again in 2019, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority requested a risk assessment from an independent scientific body regarding parasites in Norwegian drinking water. On each occasion, it was requested that specific questions were addresse

Priority setting in health: development and application of a multi-criteria algorithm for the population of New Zealand's Waikato region.

BackgroundPriority setting in a climate of diverse needs and limited resources is one of the most significant challenges faced by health care policymakers. This paper develops and applies a comprehensive multi-criteria algorithm to help determine the relative importance of health conditions that affect a defined population.MethodsOur algorithm is implemented in the context of the Waikato District Health Board (WDHB) in New Zealand, which serves approximately 10% of the New Zealand population. Strategic priorities of the WDHB are operationalized into five criteria along which the algorithm is s

Seasonal dynamics of human retinol status in mobile pastoralists in Chad.

Vitamin A deficiency is a prevalent public health problem in Africa and South-East Asia, although national population based surveys are lacking in many countries. This study investigated seasonal variation of human retinol concentrations in Chadian mobile pastoralists to identify critical time periods for interventions addressing vitamin A deficiency. The repeated cross-sectional study design used convenience sampling during three seasons to include 327 Fulani, Gorane and Arab adult mobile pastoralists in nine camps in the Lake Chad area. Human blood and pooled cattle milk retinol concentratio

Influenza-like illness in an urban community of Salvador, Brazil: incidence, seasonality and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Our understanding of the epidemiology of influenza is limited in tropical regions, which in turn has hampered identifying optimal region-specific policy to diminish disease burden. Influenza-like illness (ILI) is a clinical diagnosis that can be used as a surrogate for influenza. This study aimed to define the incidence and seasonality of ILI and to assess its association with climatic variables and school calendar in an urban community in the tropical region of Salvador, Brazil. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2013, we conducted enhanced community-based surveillance for acute febrile i

Impact of meteorological and environmental factors on the spatial distribution of Fasciola hepatica in beef cattle herds in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Fasciola hepatica is a parasite with a significant impact on ruminant livestock production. Previous studies in north-west Europe have described its geographical distribution and determined potential predictors of fasciolosis using geographical information system (GIS) and regression modelling. In Sweden, however, information about the distribution of fasciolosis is limited. This study examined the geographical distribution of F. hepatica and identified high-risk areas for beef cattle in Sweden and sought to characterise potential predictors. Beef cattle serum samples were collecte

Advances in science and applications of air pollution monitoring: A case study on oil sands monitoring targeting ecosystem protection.

The potential environmental impact of air pollutants emitted from the oil sands industry in Alberta, Canada, has received considerable attention. The mining and processing of bitumen to produce synthetic crude oil, and the waste products associated with this activity, lead to significant emissions of gaseous and particle air pollutants. Deposition of pollutants occurs locally (i.e., near the sources) and also potentially at distances downwind, depending upon each pollutant's chemical and physical properties and meteorological conditions. The Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program (JOSM) was initia

Urban soils along the Kern River and Los Gatos Creek are hotspots for Coccidioides in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is acquired through inhalation of spores produced by fungi in the genus Coccidioides. Coccidioides is commonly detected in and cultivated from the lung tissue of native rodents and the soils within their burrows. Coccidioidomycosis is acquired by exposure to environmentally produced spores and is not spread between hosts. Thus, determining the location of rodent burrows with soils harboring Coccidioides will be critical for understanding coccidioidomycosis incidence and modeling how Coccidioides distributions will be affected by global change. Coccidioides is

Evaluation of the 2022 West Nile virus forecasting challenge, USA.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental USA, with an average of ~1200 severe, neuroinvasive cases reported annually from 2005 to 2021 (range 386-2873). Despite this burden, efforts to forecast WNV disease to inform public health measures to reduce disease incidence have had limited success. Here, we analyze forecasts submitted to the 2022 WNV Forecasting Challenge, a follow-up to the 2020 WNV Forecasting Challenge. METHODS: Forecasting teams submitted probabilistic forecasts of annual West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease (WNND)

Interspecific variation in thermoregulation among three sympatric bats inhabiting a hot, semi-arid environment.

Bats in hot roosts experience some of the most thermally challenging environments of any endotherms, but little is known about how heat tolerance and evaporative cooling capacity vary among species. We investigated thermoregulation in three sympatric species (Nycteris thebaica, Taphozous mauritianus and Sauromys petrophilus) in a hot, semi-arid environment by measuring body temperature (T(b)), metabolic rate and evaporative water loss (EWL) at air temperatures (T(a)) of 10-42 °C. S. petrophilus was highly heterothermic with no clear thermoneutral zone, and exhibited rapid increases in EWL at h

Thematic Evolution in Medical Education Research (2000-2024): A Large-Scale BERTopic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Few large-scale, semantically informed mappings of medical education research exist: traditional methods such as keyword co-occurrence and Latent Dirichlet Allocation cannot capture the contextual meaning of scientific abstracts. This study aimed to identify major research topics in medical education, classify their temporal trends, explore temporal associations with major policy and technology developments, and characterize their structural positioning. METHODS: We applied BERTopic, a transformer-based topic modeling framework, to 276,253 English-language publications from PubMed

Assessment of adaptive and physiological trait expression in one-year-old male calves from Braford, Brangus, Tulianguy, Hereford, and Angus breeds in northern Uruguay.

The Uruguayan livestock system, particularly in the northern region, is predominantly pastoral and highly dependent on climatic conditions, making it vulnerable to increasing droughts, high temperatures, and reduced rainfall. The objective of this study was to evaluate breed-level thermoregulatory responses under field heat stress using rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), and surface temperatures across three THIhadj strata. Physiological responses were assessed in one-year-old castrated male calves from five beef breeds: Angus (n = 5), Hereford (n = 5), Brangus (n = 10), Braford (
