Effect of Tinnitus and Duration of Deafness on Sound Localization and Speech Recognition in Noise in Patients With Single-Sided Deafness.

Patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) often experience poor sound localization, reduced speech understanding in noise, reduced quality o … ation and speech recognition in noise. Those experiencing noticeable tinnitus may benefit more from cochlear implantation than those without; subjective tinnitus reduction may be correlated with improved sound localization and speech recognition in noise. Subjects with longer duration of deafness demonstrated better sound localization, suggesting long-term compensation …

[Intraoperative measurement of stapes mobility using a hand-guided electromagnetic probe].

BACKGROUND: The hearing results of otosurgery are still unsatisfactory. Even after successful implantation of middle ear prostheses there often remains an air bone gap of 30 dB or more. As possible reasons dislocation of the prostheses due to scar growth, changes in prostheses' attachment or ventilation disorders are being discussed. Decreased stapes mobility, which has been judged only manually up to now, is supposed to be a further reason. METHOD: We are introducing a new electromagnetic probe. The output signal of this device is proportional to the impedance of the stapes-annular ligament

Attenuation of cochlear damage from noise trauma by an iron chelator, a free radical scavenger and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor in vivo.

Tissue injury by reactive oxygen species (ROS) may play a role in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Since iron is involved in ROS generation, we studied if an iron chelator, deferoxamine mesylate (DFO), alone or in combination with mannitol, a hydroxyl scavenger and weak iron chelator, attenuates NIHL. Further, we investigated if glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) provides additive or synergistic protection of the cochlea from acoustic trauma when given together with DFO and mannitol. Pigmented female guinea pigs were exposed to noise (4 kHz octave band, 115 dB SPL, 5 h). One

Role of the efferent medial olivocochlear system in contralateral masking and binaural interactions: an electrophysiological study in guinea pigs.

Contralateral broadband noise (BBN) elevates ipsilateral auditory thresholds (central masking) and reduces the amplitude of ipsilateral brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). Binaural interactions are complex psychophysical phenomena, but binaural interaction components are easily extracted from BAEPs to monaural versus binaural click stimulation. However, contralateral, or binaural, acoustical stimulation is known to activate simultaneously the crossed and uncrossed medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent systems and decrease activity in both cochleas. Particularly, contralateral BBN stimu

The multichannel auditory brainstem implant: how many electrodes make sense?

OBJECT: Development of multichannel auditory brainstem implant (ABI) systems has been based in part on the assumption that audiological outcome can be optimized by increasing the number of available electrodes. In this paper the authors critically analyze this assumption on the basis of a retrospective clinical study performed using the Nucleus 22 ABI surface electrode array. METHODS: The perceptual performances of 61 patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2 were tested approximately 6 weeks after an eight-electrode ABI had been implanted. Of eight implanted electrodes 5.57 +/- 2.57 (mean +/- s

Preserving music reward in age-related hearing loss through training and adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (HL) is highly prevalent, undertreated, and can negatively impact quality of life. Music engagement, which supports cognition and well-being, is affected by HL; however, implications of HL on music reward remain unclear. The authors hypothesized that worsening HL may reduce music perception and engagement, but reward may be preserved through musical training and impaired by increasing age. METHODS: The present study used a convergent mixed-methods approach to examine the cross-sectional associations between HL and music perception, engagement, and reward, a

Serum amyloid A (SAA) as a biomarker of chronic infection due to boat strike trauma in a free-ranging Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) with incidental polycystic kidneys.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Middle ear prostheses are among the smallest implanted medical devices, with diameters as small as 0.25 mm. Accurate postoperative imaging is critical for assessing prosthesis placement, detecting complications such as dislodgement or extrusion, and informing potential revisions. Conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT) is traditionally used for imaging these implants; however, with the recent clinical use of photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT), further analysis on multiple parameters is required to assess future utility. This study compares the spatial res

Charge-balanced biphasic electrical stimulation inhibits neurite extension of spiral ganglion neurons.

Intracochlear application of exogenous or transgenic neurotrophins, such as neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), could promote the resprouting of spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) neurites in deafened animals. These resprouting neurites might reduce the gap between cochlear implant electrodes and their targeting SGNs, allowing for an improvement of spatial resolution of electrical stimulation. This study is to investigate the impact of electrical stimulation employed in CI on the extension of resprouting SGN neurites. We established an in vitro model including the dev
