BACKGROUND: Nearly half of women treated with aromatase inhibitors (AI) develop AI-associated musculoskeletal symptoms (AIMSS) such as arthralgias, but to the authors' knowledge the etiology is unclear. The upper extremities are frequently affected, especially the wrists, hands, and fingers. AI use may also increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Tendon sheath fluid and tenosynovial changes have been demonstrated by imaging symptomatic patients who were treated with AIs. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Silver Ring Splints (SRSs) on hand function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: RA patients with stable disease and finger deformities eligible for splinting received 1 or more SRSs. Primary outcome was dexterity, which was measured with the Sequential Occupational Dexterity Assessment (SODA). This paper outlines the causative factors, incidence, and localization of extremity amputations of wounded persons treated at the Osijek University Hospital (Eastern Slavonia) during 1991 and 1992. The medical documentation of 5,024 patients was analyzed. Of these, 1,560 patients were treated in the hospital (31.0%). A total of 1,916 extremity injuries were found in hospitalized wounded patients. Injuries of the lower extremities were found in 1,226 patients and injuries of the upper extremities in 690 patients. In a field study the injury pattern as well as the active and passive injury prophylaxis of 1036 inline skaters were evaluated. Of them, 60% had already been injured. Every 124 h an injury occurred during inline skating. While 61% of the injuries affected only soft tissue, 31% were joint distorsions, and 8% were fractures. Altogether 37% of the 626 injured skaters required medical treatment.
