Predictors of heroin relapse: Personality traits, impulsivity, COMT gene Val158met polymorphism in a 5-year prospective study in Shanghai, China.

Relapse is a typical feature of heroin addiction and rooted in genetic and psychological determinants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of personality traits, impulsivity, and COMT gene polymorphism (rs4680) on relapse to heroin use during 5-year follow up. 564 heroin dependent patients were enrolled in compulsory drug rehabilitation center. 12 months prior to their release, personality traits were measured by BIS-11 (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11) and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). The COMT gene rs4680 polymorphism was genotyped using a DNA sequence detection syst

Personality Structure Among Centenarians: The Georgia Centenarian Study.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/STUDY CONTEXT: We demonstrate that observer-rated factor structure of personality in centenarians is congruent with the normative structure. Prevalence of cognitive impairment, which has previously been linked to changes in personality in younger samples, is high in this age group, requiring observer ratings to obtain valid data in a population-based context. Likewise, the broad range of cognitive functioning necessitates synthesis of results across multiple measures of cognitive performance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 161 participants in the Georgia Centenarian Stu

Dietary and genetic manipulations of folate metabolism differentially affect neocortical functions in mice.

Converging evidence suggests that folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism may modulate cognitive functioning throughout the lifespan, but few studies have directly tested this hypothesis. This study examined the separate and combined effects of dietary and genetic manipulations of folate metabolism on neocortical functions in mice, modeling a common genetic variant in the MTHFD1 gene in humans. Mutant (Mthfd1(gt/+)) and wildtype (WT) male mice were assigned to a folate sufficient or deficient diet at weaning and continued on these diets throughout testing on a series of visual attention tasks ad

Poor decision making in male patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Decision making is impaired in female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), but it is unclear if the same impairment is present in male patients with AN. METHOD: Decision making was assessed in 48 AN individuals (19 male and 29 female patients) and 61 healthy controls (20 male and 41 female patients) using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). RESULTS: Both male and female patients with AN performed significantly worse than healthy controls on the IGT. No gender differences in IGT performance were found across groups. Male patients had higher impulsivity scores, but impulsivity had not pre

Gambling disorders.

Gambling disorders, including pathological gambling and problem gambling, have received increased attention from clinicians and researchers over the past three decades since gambling opportunities have expanded around the world. This Seminar reviews prevalence, causes and associated features, screening and diagnosis, and treatment approaches. Gambling disorders affect 0·2-5·3% of adults worldwide, although measurement and prevalence varies according to the screening instruments and methods used, and availability and accessibility of gambling opportunities. Several distinct treatment approaches

Neuropsychiatric symptoms and intelligence quotient in autosomal dominant Segawa disease.

Segawa disease is a rare dystonia due to autosomal dominant guanosine triphosphate cyclohydrolase I (adGTPCH) deficiency, affecting dopamine and serotonin biosynthesis. Recently, the clinical phenotype was expanded to include psychiatric manifestations, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Although cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms may be attributable to dopamine deficiency in the prefrontal cortex and frontostriatal circuitry, intelligence is considered normal in Segawa disease. Our aim was to investigate neuropsychiatric symptoms and intel

Impulsivity and socio-economic status interact to increase the risk of gambling onset among youth.

AIMS: To determine if impulsivity and socio-economic status (SES) interact to influence gambling onset in youth. DESIGN: Longitudinal study of grade 7 students followed for 8 years. SETTING: Montréal, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 628 adult students aged 12.6 years on average at cohort inception. MEASUREMENTS: Impulsivity and SES (parent education, area deprivation) were collected during secondary school. Age of gambling onset was collected retrospectively when participants were aged 20.3 years. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to model the association between time to first

Behavioural addictions in bipolar disorder patients: role of impulsivity and personality dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural addictions (BAs) can be understood as disorders characterized by repetitive occurrence of impulsive and uncontrolled behaviours. Very few studies have investigated their association with mood disorders. The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the main behavioural addictions in a sample of bipolar outpatients in euthymic phase or stabilised by medications and to investigate the role of impulsivity and temperamental and character dimensions. METHODS: One-hundred-fifty-eight Bipolar Disorder (BD) (DSM-IV) outpatients were assessed with tests design

Sensory over-responsivity in elementary school: prevalence and social-emotional correlates.

Sensory over-responsivity (SOR) towards tactile and auditory input can impact children's participation in academic and social activities; however the prevalence of SOR behaviors and their relation to social-emotional problems and competence has not been rigorously studied. This study investigated SOR in a representative sample of elementary school-aged children (n = 925, 50% boys, ages 7-11 years) who were followed from infancy. Sixteen percent of parents reported that at least four tactile or auditory sensations bothered their children. Being bothered by certain sensations was common while ot

Risk factors for problematic gambling: a critical literature review.

This article is a critical review of risk factors for pathological gambling categorized by demographics, physiological and biological factors, cognitive distortions, comorbidity and concurrent symptoms, and personality symptoms and characteristics. There is also a varia section (availability, parents playing, sensory characteristics, schedules of reinforcement, age of onset, and playing duration). The review found very few well established risk factors for pathological gambling (i.e. more than two studies to support the conclusions). Well established risk factors included demographic variables

Addiction and the brain antireward system.

A neurobiological model of the brain emotional systems has been proposed to explain the persistent changes in motivation that are associated with vulnerability to relapse in addiction, and this model may generalize to other psychopathology associated with dysregulated motivational systems. In this framework, addiction is conceptualized as a cycle of decreased function of brain reward systems and recruitment of antireward systems that progressively worsen, resulting in the compulsive use of drugs. Counteradaptive processes, such as opponent process, that are part of the normal homeostatic limit

What symptoms predict the diagnosis of mania in persons with severe/profound intellectual disability in clinical practice?

BACKGROUND: While researchers have attempted to address the difficulties of diagnosing affective disorders in the intellectually disabled population, diagnosing bipolar disorder in an individual with severe intellectual disability (ID) remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to identify what symptoms can predict a diagnosis of mania in the intellectually disabled population. METHODS: Three groups of persons with ID participated in this study: (1) individuals with a bipolar diagnosis who were currently manic; (2) individuals with an Axis I diagnosis other than bipolar disorder; and (3)

Hoarding and its relation to obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although hoarding is observed in some patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it has not been shown to share a specific relation with OCD. Across two studies, we found that (a) whereas the classic OCD symptoms of checking, rituals, and contamination intercorrelated consistently strongly with one another, hoarding related only moderately to both these OCD symptoms and to depression; (b) OCD patients were distinguished from both other patients and non-patients by classic OCD symptoms, but not by hoarding; and (c) whereas OCD symptoms showed consistent relations with Negative Affect, h

A form of relapse prevention for men in a high security hospital.

BACKGROUND: Marlatt and Gordon's relapse prevention model has evolved, and been applied to many repetitive problem behaviours, including drug use, gambling and sexual offending. High security hospital patients often present with a number of such behaviours. AIM: To evaluate a relapse prevention group in one high security hospital. METHOD: Nine patients were selected on clinical need for the group. In a naturalistic study design, each completed several self-report questionnaires pre- and post-group. RESULTS: Analysis of group results demonstrated a significant increase in guilt and acceptanc

Self-reported psychotic symptoms predict impulsivity among African-American patients in an urban non-psychiatric medical setting.

A variety of epidemiological studies have documented self-reported psychotic symptoms among individuals in the general population. Research has not been conducted on the associations between self-reported psychotic symptoms and enduring personality characteristics, such as impulsivity, among participants in non-psychiatric settings. We hypothesized that impulsivity scores, as measured by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), would be predicted partly by the presence of one or more of a variety of positive psychotic experiences, determined by the revised Symptom Checklist-90. The sample con

Effects of nicotine deprivation on craving response covariation in smokers.

Most models of craving propose that when cravings are strong, diverse responses--thought to index an underlying craving state--covary. Previous studies provided weak support for this hypothesis. The authors tested whether nicotine deprivation affects degree of covariation across multiple measures related to craving. Heavy and light smokers (N = 127) were exposed to smoking cues while either nicotine deprived or nondeprived. Measures included urge ratings, affective valence, a behavioral choice task assessing perceived reinforcement value of smoking, and smoking-related judgment tasks. Results

Frontal white matter microstructure, aggression, and impulsivity in men with schizophrenia: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Aggression and impulsivity may involve altered frontal white matter. METHODS: Axial diffusion tensor images were acquired in 14 men with schizophrenia using a pulsed gradient, double spin echo, echo planar imaging method. White matter microstructural measures (fractional anisotropy and trace) were calculated from these data. Regions of interest were placed in frontal white matter on four slices. Impulsivity was measured using the Motor Impulsiveness factor of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Aggressiveness was measured using the Assaultiveness scale of the Buss Durkee Hostility In

[Hyperactive behavior in adults; possibly attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)].

Two men aged 34 and 41 years, respectively, displayed hyperactive and chaotic behaviour. On the basis of the symptoms and their effect on the patients' functioning during childhood and adulthood, the diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was made. The patients became calmer with methylphenidate treatment, but a few months later they chose to stop taking the medication and to accept their hyperactive behaviour. To establish the diagnosis of ADHD in adults, it is essential that some of the symptoms started before seven years of age and that the symptoms and resulting impai

Ladies of fashion: pleasure, perversion or paraphilia.

The author considers the reasons why interest in fashion is important in female development. Freud's comment that 'all women are clothes fetishists' and his explanation that a woman uses clothes to show that 'one can find in her everything that one can expect from women' are amplified and challenged by other authors and psychoanalytic evidence. Caper's (1994) focus on the erotic meaning of his patient's clothing is contrasted with the use ego-psychologists have made of 'appropriate' clothing and grooming as markers of mental health and intact functioning. A case of a woman who had a shopping s
