OBJECTIVES: Dengue fever is arthropod born disease transmitted by the bite of a mosquito called Aedes aegypti. Some researchers have suggested a link between previous dengue infection and leukemia. The aim of this pilot study is to determine the frequency of dengue infection in acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients (ALL) compared to age and sex matched controls and to find the impact of this infection on the disease outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a single center pilot study that included two groups, 30 newly diagnosed pediatric ALL patients and 22 newly diagnosed adult ALL patients tha

Malaria currently causes more harm to human beings than any other parasitic disease, and disproportionally affects low-income populations. The ethical issues raised by efforts to control or eliminate malaria have received little explicit analysis, in comparison with other major diseases of poverty. While some ethical issues associated with malaria are similar to those that have been the subject of debate in the context of other infectious diseases, malaria also raises distinct ethical issues in virtue of its unique history, epidemiology, and biology. This paper provides preliminary ethical ana

Dengue is an important vector-borne disease occurring globally. Dengue virus (DENV) infection can result in a potentially life-threatening disease. To date, no DENV-specific antiviral treatment is available. Moreover, an equally effective pan-serotype dengue virus vaccine is not available. Recently, two DENV vaccines, Dengvaxia and Qdenga, were licensed for limited use. However, none of them have been approved in Bangladesh. DENV is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and global warming caused by climate change favoring Aedes breeding plays an important role in increasing DENV infections in Bangl

BACKGROUND: Infections with the chikungunya virus are increasingly reported due to many reasons including climate change. Two vaccines against chikungunya have recently been approved in Europe, the live-attenuated vaccine (LAV) Ixchiq and the virus like particle (VLP) vaccine Vimkunya. However, no systematic review of phase 3 clinical trial data has been published that summarizes the currently available evidence on the immunogenicity, tolerability, and safety of these vaccines. Therefore, these data were systematically analyzed by a working group of the German Standing Committee on Vaccination

Malathion is one of the most extensively used organophosphorus pesticides applied in agriculture, mosquito eradication and in the control of animal ectoparasites and human body lice. The widespread use of malathion has raised concern over its potential to cause untoward health effects in humans, animals and birds. Malathion inhibits cytochrome P450 monooxygenases and has the potential to alter pharmacokinetic profiles of therapeutic agents that are metabolized in the liver. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of subchronic exposure of malathion on the pharmacokinetic dispos

OBJECTIVES: In a tropical country like Bangladesh, where the climatic condition favors the growth of Aedes mosquito vectors, the success of dengue prevention depends largely on the proper identification and control of risk factors. Therefore this study was aimed to explore the potential risk factors and their association with dengue infection.
STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study including 150 cases and 150 controls was conducted in Chattogram district of Bangladesh. Cases were confirmed dengue patients admitted in Chattogram medical college hospital and Bangladesh institute of tropical and inf

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of different arboviruses and represents a major public health problem. Several Brazilian populations of Ae. aegypti have developed resistance to temephos, the most used organophosphate larvicide. New tools which are less harmful to the environment and safer for humans are becoming increasingly important to control this insect vector. Spinosad, an aerobic fermentation product of a soil actinobacteria, has a favorable environmental profile. It presents selective insecticide properties, a mechanism of action that differs from those of many syntheti

For more than 50 years it has been a dream of medical entomologists and public health workers to control diseases like malaria and dengue fever by modifying, through genetics and other methods, the arthropods that transmit them to humans. A brief synopsis of the history of these efforts as applied to mosquitoes is presented; none proved to be effective in reducing disease prevalence. Only in the last few years have novel approaches been developed or proposed that indicate the long wait may be over. Three recent developments are particularly promising: CRISPR-Cas9 driven genetic modification, s

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Pakistan, where persistent transmission, heterogeneous risk patterns, and evolving treatment practices continue to impede control and elimination efforts.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 9211 symptomatic individuals in District Dera Ismail Khan, northwestern Pakistan, from January 2024 to December 2025. Malaria was diagnosed using rapid immunochromatographic assays for Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) and Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum), and associated risk factors were assessed using multivar

Mosquito-borne arthritogenic alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Ross River virus (RRV), and Mayaro virus (MAYV), cause acute febrile polyarthralgia and can leave a substantial proportion of patients with persistent or relapsing musculoskeletal disease. In many cohorts, chronic arthritis continues after systemic viremia has declined, suggesting that late tissue pathology is sustained largely by host inflammatory programs rather than by ongoing productive viral replication. This Mini Review examines the NLRP3 inflammasome as a pathogenic node linking viral danger sensing to chron

Background: Viral diseases including dengue, zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever remain a significant public health challenge, primarily due to the increasing resistance of these vectors, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, to conventional control methods. Objectives: Herein, a microencapsulated curcumin formulation was developed and characterized using spray-drying technology, with D-mannitol and starch as encapsulating agents. After microencapsulation, photolarvicidal tablet formulations (Formulated Curcumin Tablets-FCT) were prepared, varying the proportions of starch and pectin: FCT1 (60% starch),

Herein we present the first-known case report of a structural infestation by the bird flea (Dasypsyllus gallinulae perpinnatus) (Dale 1878) in the United States. In March of 2023, the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District was contacted by a resident in South San Francisco, CA who reported the presence of fleas inside their condominium. The resident had 2 dogs who were on oral flea medication and only 1 inhabitant out of 4 reported receiving flea bites. The front walkway, backyard, and garage were flagged and a small passerine nest was removed from a fire alarm bell in the front

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in Iran. The nonstandard use of pesticides against pests, particularly in agriculture, indirectly has caused the development of resistance and, consequently, the threat of control measures in ZCL endemic areas. Up to 2023, several reports of resistance in Ph. papatasi have been declared in the Old World. The purpose of this study was to measure the lethal time (LT50 and LT90) of Ph. papatasi sand flies in the ZCL endemic center of Esfahan to DDT and deltamethrin insecticides.

The malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi, which is typically restricted to South Asia and the Middle East, was recently detected in the Horn of Africa. Addressing the spread of this vector could involve integrated vector control that considers the status of insecticide resistance of multiple vector species in the region. Previous reports indicate that the knockdown resistance mutations (kdr) in the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) are absent in both pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-sensitive An. stephensi in eastern Ethiopia; however, similar information about other vector species in the

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne disease caused by filarial nematodes including Brugia malayi. Over 860 million people worldwide are infected or at risk of infection in 72 endemic countries. The absence of a protective vaccine means that current control strategies rely on mass drug administration programs that utilize inadequate drugs that cannot effectively kill adult parasites, thus established infections are incurable. Progress to address deficiencies in the approach to LF control is hindered by a poor mechanistic understanding of host-parasite interactions, including mechanism

BACKGROUND: Dengue is the most rapidly spreading mosquito borne viral disease in the world with increasing geographical expansion to new countries and from urban to rural settings due to combination of urbanisation, population growth, increased international travel and trade and global warming. The epidemiology of dengue fever in India has been very complex with a seasonal pattern. The first outbreak in Odisha was in 2010 and is now spreading to different districts of the state.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital based cross-sectional study was carried out between 2017 to 2018 in the dengue wa
