Effects of Online Game and Short Video Behavior on Academic Delay of Gratification - Mediating Effects of Anxiety, Depression and Retrospective Memory.

OBJECTIVE: Learner dependence on short videos has many pitfalls for learning outcomes, but the negative effects of excessive short video use have been little discussed in the learning psychology literature. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of excessive short video use on anxiety, depression, prospective memory, and academically delayed gratification (ADOG) in relation to online gaming-related behaviours, and explored the possible mechanisms by which excessive online gaming and short video use may lead to decreased ADOG, to expand our understanding of excessive short video use. Leveraging convenient wearable technology to assess adolescent sleep: physical and behavioral health correlates of single-channel sleep electroencephalogram in a community sample of youth.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep disturbances during adolescence heighten risk for physical and behavioral health problems, yet sleep physiological markers critical to health outcomes are rarely assessed in pediatric care. Wearable single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) devices may offer scalable, ecologically valid methods for assessing sleep physiology in home settings. This study evaluated whether single-channel sleep-EEG metrics were associated with physical and behavioral health in adolescents. METHODS: Eighty-five community-derived adolescents (ages 11-17, 50% female) completed seven consec

Mix and MATCH: The use of a Modular Approach for Youth Psychotherapy in Routine Clinical Care and Associations with Outcomes.

The Modular Approach to Therapy for Children (MATCH) consists of individual evidence-based components (modules) that clinicians can flexibly select to target a range of emotional and behavioral symptoms. The treatment manual includes flowcharts that outline a sequence of modules recommended for each problem area: anxiety, depression, and conduct problems. This study explored the use of modules and associations with outcomes for youths who received MATCH in routine clinical care. The sample included 964 youths ages 3-17 (51% female, 52% White, 35% Hispanic, 9% Black) with primary anxiety, depre

Effects of size and atomic defects on the buckling of single-layer and double-layer graphene nanoplates using AFEM.

This study investigates the effect of single atomic vacancy defects with different random distributions on the buckling behavior of single- and double-layer graphene nanoplates. A parametric analysis was conducted to assess the influence of nanoplate dimensions, aspect ratio, defect concentration, number of layers, and boundary conditions on the critical buckling load ([Formula: see text]). To capture the discrete nature of graphene, the nanoplates were modeled using a space frame approach, where covalent bonds between carbon atoms were represented as beam elements and interlayer van der Waals

Dismantling weight stigma in eating disorder treatment: Next steps for the field.

The authors posit current guidelines and treatment for eating disorders (EDs) fail to adequately address, and often perpetuate, weight stigma. The social devaluation and denigration of higher-weight individuals cuts across nearly every life domain and is associated with negative physiological and psychosocial outcomes, mirroring the harms attributed to weight itself. Maintaining focus on weight in ED treatment can intensify weight stigma among patients and providers, leading to increased internalization, shame, and poorer health outcomes. Stigma has been recognized as a fundamental cause of he

2-Ethylhexyl Diphenyl Phosphate Causes Obesity in Zebrafish by Stimulating Overeating via Inhibition of Dopamine Receptor D2.

Obesity is a popular public health problem worldwide and is mainly caused by overeating, but little is known about the impacts of synthetic chemicals on obesity. Herein, we evaluated the obesogenic effect caused by 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP) on zebrafish. Adult zebrafish were exposed to 5, 35, and 245 μg/L of EHDPHP for 21 days. Results showed that EHDPHP exposure significantly promoted the feeding behavior of zebrafish, as evidenced by shorter reaction time, increased average food intake, feeding rate, and intake frequency (p < 0.05). Transcriptomic, real-time quantitative PCR,

A Novel Laser-Based Zebrafish Model for Studying Traumatic Brain Injury and Its Molecular Targets.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health problem. Here, we developed a novel model of non-invasive TBI induced by laser irradiation in the telencephalon of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) and assessed their behavior and neuromorphology to validate the model and evaluate potential targets for neuroreparative treatment. Overall, TBI induced hypolocomotion and anxiety-like behavior in the novel tank test, strikingly recapitulating responses in mammalian TBI models, hence supporting the face validity of our model. NeuN-positive cell staining was markedly reduced one day, but not seven d

EEG-based emotion recognition using hybrid CNN and LSTM classification.

Emotions are a mental state that is accompanied by a distinct physiologic rhythm, as well as physical, behavioral, and mental changes. In the latest days, physiological activity has been used to study emotional reactions. This study describes the electroencephalography (EEG) signals, the brain wave pattern, and emotion analysis all of these are interrelated and based on the consequences of human behavior and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder effects for long-term illness are associated with considerable suffering, impairment, and social/emotional impairment.

A Concise Binomial Model for Nonlinear Creep-Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior at Elevated Temperatures.

The creep-fatigue crack growth problem remains challenging since materials exhibit different linear and nonlinear behaviors depending on the environmental and loading conditions. In this paper, we systematically carried out a series of creep-fatigue crack growth experiments to evaluate the influence from temperature, stress ratio, and dwell time for the nickel-based superalloy GH4720Li. A transition from coupled fatigue-dominated fracture to creep-dominated fracture was observed with the increase of dwell time at 600 °C, while only the creep-dominated fracture existed at 700 °C, regardless of

Decision-making (in)flexibility in gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral flexibility -the ability to dynamically readjust our behavior in response to reward contingency changes- is often investigated using probabilistic reversal learning tasks (PRLT). Poor PRLT performance has been proposed as a proxy for compulsivity, and theorized to be related to perseverative gambling. Previous attempts to measure inflexibility with the PRLT in patients with gambling disorder have, however, used a variety of indices that may conflate inflexibility with more general aspects of performance in the task. METHODS: Trial-by-trial PRLT acquisition and reacquisi

Gamblers' beliefs about responsibility for minimizing gambling harm: Associations with problem gambling screening and gambling involvement.

Increasingly, gambling stakeholders communicate that minimizing gambling harm is a shared societal responsibility. Individual gamblers' beliefs about responsibility for minimizing gambling harm are worthy of study because these beliefs might influence gambling behavior. In this study, using a sample of casino loyalty program subscribers (N = 4,795), we observed that respondents who had a positive result on a brief gambling disorder screen were more likely than those who screened negative to hold seven stakeholder groups (i.e., scientists, clinicians, casino employees, government regulators, pu

Aspects of Parent-Child Interaction from Infancy to Late Adolescence Are Associated with Severity of Childhood Maltreatment through Age 18.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a pervasive public health problem worldwide, with negative health consequences across the lifespan. Despite these adverse outcomes, identifying children who are being maltreated remains a challenge. Thus, there is a need to identify reliably observable features of parent-child interaction that indicate risk for CM and that can instigate strategically targeted family supports. The aim of this longitudinal study was to assess multiple aspects of observed mother-child interaction from infancy to late adolescence as risk indicators of the overall severity of CM by ag

Antidepressants in Surface Waters: Fluoxetine Influences Mosquitofish Anxiety-Related Behavior at Environmentally Relevant Levels.

Pharmaceutical contamination is an increasing problem globally. In this regard, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)-a group of antidepressants-are particularly concerning. By disrupting the serotonergic system, SSRIs have the potential to affect ecologically important behaviors in exposed wildlife. Despite this, the nature and magnitude of behavioral perturbations resulting from environmentally relevant SSRI exposure among species is poorly understood. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of two field-realistic levels of the SSRI fluoxetine (61 and 352 ng/L) on sociability

Mediterranean spotted fever in Spain, 1997-2014: Epidemiological situation based on hospitalization records.

INTRODUCTION: Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is a zoonotic disease caused by Rickettsia conorii. In Spain, deficiencies in the official reporting result in misreporting of this disease. This study aims to describe the clinical and temporal-spatial characteristics of MSF hospitalizations between 1997 and 2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective descriptive study using the Hospitalization Minimum Data Set (CMBD). All CMBD's hospital discharges with ICD-9 CM code 082.1 were analyzed. Hospitalization rates were calculated and clinical characteristics were described. Spatial di
