Vector-borne pathogen profiling and phylogeny of ticks infesting domestic dogs in Chad, Africa, using targeted next-generation sequencing and DNA barcoding.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the range of vectors and pathogen diversity in sub-Saharan Africa is crucial for efficient disease prevention and control efforts. Domestic dogs are susceptible to many vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) and serve as sentinels for several human pathogens. Yet, critical surveillance gaps in canine VBPs persist in Central Africa, where the tropical climate and pastoral agro-livelihoods create unique transmission risks. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey from September to October 2021, collecting 4238 ticks from 1254 domestic dogs across 56 villages in Chad, Afri

A wheat canopy albedo high-throughput phenotyping method and its relationship with canopy architecture and leaf properties.

Heat stress damage leads to yield penalties in many wheat-growing areas. Climate change models predict warmer scenarios and more frequent heat shocks. Consequently, wheat breeders need to develop more productive varieties for warm conditions, and therefore, the identification of heat-tolerance traits is needed. Albedo is an integrative trait of the optical properties of the canopy defined as the ratio of reflected light to total light received. High albedos in warm conditions may help reduce damaging radiation. Despite its potential relevance for heat avoidance, albedo has been little explored

Cross-lag interaction between temperature and PM2.5 reveals hidden windows of cardiovascular mortality risk in a tropical megacity.

BACKGROUND: Climate change and PM2.5 co-occur in tropical megacities, yet their joint effects on cardiovascular mortality remain poorly resolved. Prior studies assess aligned-lag interactions, although PM2.5 may prime susceptibility to later thermal stress. We mapped the temperature-PM2.5 cross-lag surface to identify excess risk. METHODS: We conducted a time-series study in Bangkok regions (2014-2022), linking daily cardiovascular deaths to temperature and PM2.5. Quasi-Poisson generalized additive models evaluated 8 × 8 cross-lag pairs (lags0-7) using a tensor-product interaction term, adjus

Environmental Triggers and Ocular Disease Networks: Analyzing the Impact of Air Pollutants and Meteorological Factors Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps.

Growing evidence suggests that climate change and air pollution significantly contribute to the rising incidence of ocular morbidity; however, quantifying the complex interplay of these factors presents significant methodological challenges. This study aimed to investigate the impact of multiple air pollutants and meteorological conditions on common ocular diseases utilizing Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) and to delineate the pathogenic relationships among them. We analyzed data from 28,981 hospitalizations in ophthalmology (2019-2024) at a tertiary hospital in Wuhan, China, coupled with daily en

International Expert Priorities for Promoting Recovery and Coercion-Free Practices in Psychosocial Disability: A Delphi Study.

The global crisis of recent years, including pandemics, armed conflicts, climate emergencies, and economic instability, has disproportionately jeopardized the health and rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities, who remain among the most marginalized groups. In this context, promoting a rights-based approach to mental health care is both urgent and ethically imperative. Building on the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the World Health Organization (WHO) QualityRights initiative, this study aimed to identify expert-informed priorities for imp

Embodied Sensory Deprivation Hypothesis (ESDH): An Evolutionary Model of Sensory Malnutrition Linking Interoceptive Dysregulation, Anxiety, and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

The human nervous system evolved in environments characterized by continuous exposure to rich, multimodal bodily inputs, including locomotion, manual activity, physical effort, social touch, sexual contact, environmental variability, thermal fluctuations, and complex proprioceptive challenges. In contrast, modern lifestyles have progressively reduced many of these embodied sensory exposures through sedentarism, automation, climate-controlled environments, cushioned footwear, reduced manual labor, digital socialization, and diminished physical contact. Here, we propose the Embodied Sensory Depr

Heat Adaptation Benefits for Vulnerable groups In Africa (HABVIA): a study protocol for a controlled clinical heat adaptation trial.

BACKGROUND: Temperatures across Africa are expected to rise at up to twice the rate of mean global temperatures, posing significant health threats to vulnerable communities. Prolonged exposure to high day- and night-time temperatures has been implicated in a myriad of adverse health outcomes. The built environment and inadequate housing can exacerbate these consequences, prompting the need to evaluate heat adaptation interventions as a sustainable adaptation strategy for low-income and informal settlement dwellers. The Heat Adaptation Benefits for Vulnerable groups In Africa (HABVIA) study aim

Genetic correlations between enteric methane and traits of economic importance in a beef finishing system.

With the pressing global challenge of climate change, the potential to breed cattle that produce less lifetime methane offers a transformative solution that is both sustainable and impactful. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic correlations between enteric methane emissions and economically important traits included in the current terminal index used to breed animals for meat in Ireland. This terminal index is typical of terminal-type indexes used globally, constituting traits associated with calving performance, carcass merit, and efficiency traits such as feed intake and

Unveiling the methane hydrate-water interfacial free energy through direct molecular simulation at coexistence conditions.

HYPOTHESIS: The interfacial free energy between hydrate and water phases is a key thermodynamic parameter that governs both nucleation kinetics and crystal growth of gas hydrates. In these strategic materials-crystalline inclusion compounds where hydrogen-bonded water cages encapsulate small guest molecules such as methane () and carbon dioxide ()-this interfacial energy plays a crucial role in determining phase stability and formation pathways. Given the significance of gas hydrates in energy storage, sequestration, and climate-related processes, accurately determining their interfacial energ

The Iron Deficiency-Regulated Small Protein Effector FEP3/IRON MAN1 Modulates Interaction of BRUTUS-LIKE1 With bHLH Subgroup IVc and POPEYE Transcription Factors.

In light of climate change and human population growth one of the most challenging tasks is to generate plants that are Fe-efficient, resilient to low Fe supply and Fe-biofortified. For such endeavors, it is crucial to understand the regulation of Fe acquisition and allocation in plants. One open question is how identified Fe-regulatory proteins comprising positive and negative regulators act together to steer Fe homeostasis. bHLH transcription factors (TFs) belonging to the subgroups IVb and IVc can initiate a bHLH cascade controlling the -Fe response in roots. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the -F

Rapidly declining body size in an insectivorous bat is associated with increased precipitation and decreased survival.

Reduced food availability is implicated in declines in avian aerial insectivores, but the effect of nutritional stress on mammalian aerial insectivores is unclear. Unlike birds, insectivorous bats provision their young through lactation, which might protect nursing juveniles when prey availability is low but could increase the energetic burden on lactating females. We analyzed a 15-year capture-mark-recapture data set from 5312 individual little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) captured at 11 maternity colonies in northwestern Canada, to test the hypothesis that nutritional stress is impacting

Time-Varying Effects of Meteorological Variables on Malaria Epidemiology in the Context of Interrupted Control Efforts in the Amazon Rainforest, 2000-2017.

Successful malaria control interventions, mostly based on the training of health workers, distribution of insecticide-treated nets, and spraying, decrease malaria incidence; however, when these interventions are interrupted, a resurgence may occur. In the Peruvian Amazon, after discontinuing the control activities implemented by the PAMAFRO project (2006-2010)-a Global Fund-sponsored project for the strengthening of malaria control and surveillance in multiple countries in Latin America- malaria cases re-emerged dramatically. In parallel, meteorological factors determine the conditions suitabl

Introgression of Maize Diversity for Drought Tolerance: Subtropical Maize Landraces as Source of New Positive Variants.

Current climate change models predict an increased frequency and intensity of drought for much of the developing world within the next 30 years. These events will negatively affect maize yields, potentially leading to economic and social instability in many smallholder farming communities. Knowledge about the genetic resources available for traits related to drought tolerance has great importance in developing breeding program strategies. The aim of this research was to study a maize landrace introgression panel to identify chromosomal regions associated with a drought tolerance index. For tha

Structural landscape of the complete genomes of dengue virus serotypes and other viral hemorrhagic fevers.

BACKGROUND: With more than 300 million potentially infected people every year, and with the expanded habitat of mosquitoes due to climate change, Dengue virus (DENV) cannot be considered anymore only a tropical disease. The RNA secondary structure is a functional characteristic of RNA viruses, and together with the accumulated high-throughput sequencing data could provide general insights towards understanding virus biology. Here, we profiled the RNA secondary structure of > 7000 complete viral genomes from 11 different species focusing on viral hemorrhagic fevers, including DENV serotypes, EB
