Anger, a Result and Cause of Stroke: A Narrative Review.

Post-stroke mood and emotional disturbances are frequent and diverse in their manifestations. Among them, post-stroke depression is the best known. Although post-stroke anger (PSA) has been studied relatively less, it can be as frequent as depression. Manifestations of PSA range from overt aggressive behaviors (including hitting or hurting others) to becoming irritable, impulsive, hostile, and less tolerable to family members. The possible pathophysiological mechanisms of PSA include neurochemical dysfunction due to brain injury, frustration associated with neurological deficits or unfavorable

Neuroimaging in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Recent Advances.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that leads to impaired attention and impulsive behaviors diagnosed in, but not limited to, children. ADHD can cause symptoms throughout life. This article summarizes the structural (conventional, volumetric, and diffusion tensor imaging) and functional (task-based functional MRI [fMRI], resting-state fMRI, PET, and MR spectroscopy) brain findings in patients with ADHD. Consensus is lacking regarding altered anatomic or functional imaging findings of the brain in children with ADHD, likely because of the he…

Neuropsychiatric Aspects in a Patient Diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia: Clinical Case of Low Incidence and Prevalence Disease in Colombia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neuropsychiatric pathology characterized by dysfunctions in the frontal lobe of the brain, especially in planning, execution, and inhibition tasks, with an inability to make decisions and handle different sequences, also affecting the temporal lobe. The patient presents alterations to store, consolidate, and recall information. These neurocognitive deficits are accompanied by neurobehavioral disorders such as depression, anxiety, and apathy that contribute to the worsening of the quality of life, with a high impact on the individual, social, and family level.

Medically Serious Suicide Attempts in Personality Disorders.

Medically serious suicide attempts (MSSA) represent a subgroup of clinically heterogeneous suicidal behaviors very close to suicides. Personality disorders (PD) are highly prevalent among them, together with affective and substance use disorders. However, few studies have specifically analyzed the role of PD in MSSA. These suicide attempts (SA) are usually followed by longer hospitalization periods and may result in severe physical and psychological consequences. The aim of this study is to compare the profile of MSSA patients with and without PD. MSSA were defined according to Beautrais 'crit

Proposed diagnostic criteria for compulsive buying-shopping disorder: A Delphi expert consensus study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Consensus in acknowledging compulsive buying-shopping disorder (CBSD) as a distinct diagnosis has been lacking. Before research in this area can be advanced, it is necessary to establish diagnostic criteria in order to facilitate field trials. METHODS: The study consisted of the following phases: (1) operationalization of a broad range of potential diagnostic criteria for CBSD, (2) two iterative rounds of data collection using the Delphi method, where consensus of potential diagnostic criteria for CBSD was reached by an international expert panel, and (3) interpretation o

Impact of childhood maltreatment and resilience on behavioral and neural patterns of inhibitory control during emotional distraction.

Exposure to childhood maltreatment (CM) may disrupt typical development of neural systems underlying impulse control and emotion regulation. Yet resilient outcomes are observed in some individuals exposed to CM. Individual differences in adult functioning may result from variation in inhibitory control in the context of emotional distractions, underpinned by cognitive-affective brain circuits. Thirty-eight healthy adults with a history of substantiated CM and 34 nonmaltreated adults from the same longitudinal sample performed a Go/No-Go task in which task-relevant stimuli (letters) were presen

Early developmental impact of sex chromosome trisomies on attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder symptomology in young children.

Individuals with sex chromosome trisomies ([SCT], XXX, XXY, and XYY)) are at increased risk for neurodevelopmental problems, given that a significant portion of the sex chromosome genes impact brain functioning. An elevated risk for psychopathology has also been described, including attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study aimed at identifying early markers of ADHD, providing the first investigation of ADHD symptomology in very young children with SCT. The variety, type, and severity of ADHD symptomology in 1-6-year-old children with SCT (n = 104) were compared with p

The neural basis underlying the relation between the action identification level and delay discounting: The medial and orbital frontal cortex functional connectivity with the precuneus.

Previous studies have elucidated that action identification level brings ubiquitous effects in human life. The higher identification level is widely associated with future-oriented perspective, goal-directed actions, less impulsivity and so forth. However, little is known about how it relates to delay discounting. To address this issue, we sought to investigate the neural underpinning to understand their relations using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) approaches. The behavioral results revealed that higher identification level was correlated with

Identifying subtypes of trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) and excoriation (skin picking) disorder using mixture modeling in a multicenter sample.

Body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBs) include Trichotillomania (TTM; Hair pulling disorder) and Excoriation (Skin Picking) Disorder (SPD). These conditions are prevalent, highly heterogeneous, under-researched, and under-treated. In order for progress to be made in optimally classifying and treating these conditions, it is necessary to identify meaningful subtypes. 279 adults (100 with TTM, 81 with SPD, 40 with both TTM and SPD, and 58 controls) were recruited for an international, multi-center between-group comparison using mixture modeling, with stringent correction for multiple

Factorial Analysis and Invariance Testing for Age and Gender of the Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire (RPQ).

Reactive aggression is characterized by high emotional activation, impulsivity, and hostility, while proactive aggression presents a cold, instrumental, and planned strategy. The aim was to perform a psychometric analysis of the Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire [RPQ]. A non-probability sample of 502 people between 18 and 40 years old was formed, grouped by sex (n=297, 59.2% women and n=205, 40.8% men) and age (n = 224, 44.62% under 25 years old and n=278, 55.38% over 25 years old). The neural substrates responsible for how trait anxiety affects delay discounting: Right hippocampal and cerebellar connectivity with bistable right inferior parietal lobule.

Delay discounting, an indicator of impulsivity, refers to the extent of devaluing future rewards. Studies have found that individuals with trait anxiety generally depreciate the later larger rewards, showing steeper delay discounting rates. However, little is known about the neural substrates responsible for how trait anxiety affects individuals' delay discounting. To address this question, we employed the voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) methods to explore the neural substrates of trait anxiety responsible for delay discounting. Behavioral results

Selective spatial attention involves two alpha-band components associated with distinct spatiotemporal and functional characteristics.

Attention is crucial for efficiently coordinating resources over multiple objects in a visual scene. Recently, a growing number of studies suggest that attention is implemented through a temporal organization process during which resources are dynamically allocated over a multitude of objects, yet the associated neural evidence, particularly in low-level sensory areas, is still limited. Here we used EEG recordings in combination with a temporal response function (TRF) approach to examine the spatiotemporal characteristics of neuronal impulse response in covert selective attention. We demonstra

Gray Matter Volume of a Region in the Thalamic Pulvinar Is Specifically Associated with Novelty Seeking.

Personality reflects the set of psychological traits and mechanisms characteristic for an individual. Geno-neuro-biologically inspired personality accounts have proposed a set of temperaments and characters that jointly compose personality profiles. The present study addresses the link between neurobiology and personality and investigates the association between temperament traits and regional gray matter volume. Furthermore, the specificity of these associations as well as the underlying components that drive the association are addressed. One hundred and four participants completed the Tempe

Deep brain stimulation for the treatment of drug addiction.

Drug addiction represents a significant public health concern that has high rates of relapse despite optimal medical therapy and rehabilitation support. New therapies are needed, and deep brain stimulation (DBS) may be an effective treatment. The past 15 years have seen numerous animal DBS studies for addiction to various drugs of abuse, with most reporting decreases in drug-seeking behavior with stimulation. The most common target for stimulation has been the nucleus accumbens, a key structure in the mesolimbic reward pathway. In addiction, the mesolimbic reward pathway undergoes a series of

Striatal presynaptic dopaminergic dysfunction in gambling disorder: A 123 I-FP-CIT SPECT study.

Although the involvement of dopamine in gambling disorder (GD) has long been hypothesized, its precise role remains unclear. The action of dopamine in the synapses is regulated by the dopamine transporter (DAT). We hereinafter present significant differences between a sample of 15 treatment-seeking GD subjects and 17 healthy controls in terms of striatal DAT availability, and we explore its association with reward-based decision making. We performed 123 I-FP-CIT Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and correlated DAT binding ratios in the bilateral caudate and putamen with gambli

MANAGEMENT OF ENDOCRINE DISEASE: Impulse control disorders in patients with hyperpolactinemia treated with dopamine agonists: how much should we worry?

Dopamine agonists (DAs) represent a cornerstone in the management of patients with hyperprolactinemia and have an important role in the treatment of neurologic disorders, including Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome. A growing body of evidence has identified impulse control disorders (ICDs) as possible adverse effects of DA therapy. A variety of ICDs may occur in patients treated with DA, including compulsive shopping, pathologic gambling, stealing, hypersexuality and punding (repetitive performance of tasks, such as collecting, sorting, disassembling and assembling objects). These

Interplay of structure and diffusion in ternary liquid mixtures of benzene + acetone + varying alcohols.

The Fick diffusion coefficient matrix of ternary mixtures containing benzene + acetone + three different alcohols, i.e., methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol, is studied by molecular dynamics simulation and Taylor dispersion experiments. Aiming to identify common features of these mixtures, it is found that one of the main diffusion coefficients and the smaller eigenvalue do not depend on the type of alcohol along the studied composition path. Two mechanisms that are responsible for this invariant behavior are discussed in detail, i.e., the interplay between kinetic and thermodynamic contribution
