The Anopheles gambiae complex consists of multiple morphologically indistinguishable mosquito species including the most important vectors of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in sub-Saharan Africa. Nine cryptic species have been described so far within the complex. The ecological, immunological and reproductive differences among these species will critically impact population responses to disease control strategies and environmental changes. Here, we examine whole-genome sequencing data from a longitudinal study of putative A. coluzzii in western Burkina Faso. Surprisingly, many spec

Lymphatic filariasis is one of several neglected tropical diseases with severely disabling and stigmatizing manifestations that are referred to as 'neglected diseases of poverty'. It is a mosquito-borne disease found endemically and exclusively in low-income contexts where, concomitantly, general public health care is often deeply troubled and fails to meet the basic health needs of impoverished populations. This presents particular challenges for the implementation of mass drug administration (MDA), which currently is the principal means of control and eventual elimination. Several MDA progra

A neurological disease of young Pekin ducks characterized by ataxia, lameness, and paralysis was observed at several duck farms in Malaysia in 2012. Gross pathological lesions were absent or inconsistent in most of the cases, but severe and consistent microscopic lesions were found in the brain and spinal cord, characterized by non-purulent panencephalomyelitis. Several virus isolates were obtained in embryonated duck eggs and in cell cultures (Vero and DF-1) inoculated with the brain homogenates of affected ducks. After exclusion of other viruses, the isolates were identified as a flavivirus

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral disease that may produce a considerable impact on the economy in affected countries. In the last decades, the geographic distribution of RVF virus has increased including most of the countries in Africa, Arabia Saudi and Yemen. This situation has raised the concerns regarding its potential introduction in the European Union (EU) countries where the high number of susceptible species and competent vectors may contribute to the spread of the disease and challenge its rapid control. Thus, the identification of the areas and time periods with highe

Infection with West Nile virus (WNV) via a mosquito bite results in local viral replication in the skin, followed by viremia. Thus, tissue macrophages are ideally located to prevent the dissemination of WNV throughout the host. The current study shows that WNV infection of human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) results in increased WNV mRNA, protein, and infectious virions at 24 h p.i. with a decline in titer after 48 h. Concomitant with viral control was the robust induction of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) and resultant metabolism of L-tryptophan (L-Trp) to kynurenine. In WNV-exposed c

Malaria in migrant workers is always a major problem to control due to their temporary stay in shelters, and other operational constraints. Hence, a study was undertaken in brick kilns in Bharuch district, Gujarat state, India to study the problem of malaria in the work force. Mass blood surveys were carried out in 15 brick kilns. Blood slides were collected from both febrile and afebrile cases. Positive cases were treated as per the national drug policy and were followed up. Mosquito collections were carried out by pyrethrum spray collection in early morning hours. Human blood index and sporo

The freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata is closely associated with the transmission of human schistosomiasis. An ecologically sound method has been proposed to control schistosomiasis using genetically modified snails to displace endemic, susceptible ones. To assess the viability of this form of biological control, studies towards understanding the molecular makeup of the snail relative to the presence of endogenous mobile genetic elements are being undertaken since they can be exploited for genetic transformation studies. We previously cloned a 1.95kb BamHI fragment in B. glabrata (BGR2) w

West Nile virus (WNV) is a neurotropic, mosquito-borne flavivirus that can cause lethal meningoencephalitis. Type I interferon (IFN) plays a critical role in controlling WNV replication, spread, and tropism. In this study, we begin to examine the effector mechanisms by which type I IFN inhibits WNV infection. Mice lacking both the interferon-induced, double-stranded-RNA-activated protein kinase (PKR) and the endoribonuclease of the 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase-RNase L system (PKR(-/-) x RL(-/-)) were highly susceptible to subcutaneous WNV infection, with a 90% mortality rate compared to the

The release of over 6,000 genetically modified mosquitoes (GMM) into uninhabited Malaysian forests in 2010 was a frantic step on the part of the Malaysian government to combat the spread of dengue fever. The field trial was designed to control and reduce the dengue vector by producing offspring that die in the early developmental stage, thus decreasing the local Aedes aegypti population below the dengue transmission threshold. However, the GMM trials were discontinued in Malaysia despite being technologically feasible. The lack of systematic studies in terms of cost-benefit analysis, questiona

CONTEXT.—: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, causes various neurologic disorders. To differentiate ZIKV from other arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses, a highly specific, sensitive, and automated detection system is needed for point-of-care (POC) settings.
OBJECTIVE.—: To detect ZIKV at POC settings, we have developed a fully automated lab-on-a-chip microfluidic platform for rapid disease detection by using reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification.
DESIGN.—: The developed setup consists of a microfluidic chip,

BACKGROUND: Several insects such as mosquitoes, flies, ticks, fleas, lice, and mites are known to serve as vectors for a vast number of pathogens. Many such vectors are hematophagous, and therefore introduce pathogens directly into the host's bloodstream. Importantly, the capacity of these vectors to spread disease can lead to serious global health crises. Furthermore, crop damage can be exacerbated by pathogen infection and increased insect foraging due to recent global warming.
METHODS: Our study categorized insect-associated damage into three groups: animal infection, plant infection, and

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease affecting humans and animals. It is caused by RVF virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. The data presented in this article propose environmental layers suitable for mapping RVF vector habitat zones and livestock migratory routes. Using species distribution modelling, we used RVF vector occurrence data sampled along livestock migratory routes to identify suitable vector habitats within the study region which is located in the central and the north-eastern part of Kenya. Eleven herds monitored with GPS collars were used to estimate cattle

After several decades of epidemiologic silence, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has recently re-emerged, causing explosive outbreaks and reaching the 5 continents. Transmitted through the bite of Aedes species mosquitoes, CHIKV is responsible for an acute febrile illness accompanied by several characteristic symptoms, including cutaneous rash, myalgia, and arthralgia, with the latter sometimes persisting for months or years. Although CHIKV has previously been known as a relatively benign disease, more recent epidemic events have brought waves of increased morbidity and fatality, leading it to become

The objective of this study was to explore the trend and the epidemiological characteristics of malaria in Ningbo from 2000 through 2011 and provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control. Using the retrospective study, data relating to malaria epidemics during 2000-2011 in Ningbo were collected through the questionnaires of the cases and other important surveillance data. Adult mosquitoes were collected using CDC light traps baited with CO2. Results showed that Plasmodium vivax was the main species, and Anopheles sinensis was the only vector species of malaria. The annual incidenc

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is the most important mosquito-borne infection in the world. There is evidence supporting the use of biochemical alterations as prediction tools for severity of illness in dengue.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate biochemical alterations as potential prediction markers for severity in dengue.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a case-control study nested in a cohort. We randomly selected 125 severe dengue cases and 120 controls with non-severe dengue for measuring LDH, CK, CRP and albumin serum levels using acute phase sera. To evaluate the predictive value for each biomarker, we esta

Environmental substances may be involved in the etiology of breast cancers. Many studies have found an association between cancer in humans and exposure to agricultural pesticides. Organophosphorous pesticides have been used to control mosquito plagues. Parathion and malathion, organophosphorous pesticides are cholinesterase inhibitors responsible for the hydrolysis of body choline esters, including acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses. Their primary target of action in insects is the nervous system whereby they inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase at synaptic junction. Atropine is a paras

The Oropouche virus (OROV) is a new zoonotic arbovirus that mostly affects Brazil and nearby countries. Since its discovery in 1955, it has caused more than 500,000 infections, with symptoms ranging from fever and headache to serious neuroinvasive disorders such as meningitis and encephalitis. The virus spreads through urban and sylvatic cycles via vectors such as Culicoides midges and Culex mosquitos, with humans and some vertebrates serving as amplifying hosts. The manuscript aims to analyze the transmission dynamics, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and potential preventive s

All organisms sense and respond to pathogenic challenge. Tissue-specific responses are required to combat pathogens infecting distinct cell types. Cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) are produced endogenously downstream of pathogen recognition or by pathogens themselves which bind to STING to activate NF-kB-dependent antimicrobial gene expression programs. It remains unknown whether there are distinct immune responses to CDNs in Drosophila tissues. Here, we investigated tissue specific CDN-STING responses and uncovered differences in gene-induction patterns across tissues that play important roles in

There is increasing evidence supporting the immune memory in invertebrates, but the studies are relatively neglected in insect vectors other than mosquitoes. Therefore, we tested two hypotheses: 1) Rhodnius prolixus insects possess immune memory against Trypanosoma cruzi, and 2) their immune memory is costly. The Dm28c and Y strains of T. cruzi were used, the former being more infective than the latter. On the one hand, the triatomines subjected to dual challenges with the Dm28c strain did not show significant differences in survival than those of the heterologous challenge groups control-Dm28

Emergence and spread of resistance among vectors toward different insecticides is a serious problem for the Japanese encephalitis (JE) control program. Regularly monitoring the status of susceptibility of vector species to insecticides is important for formulating proper vector control measures. In this study, we studied the susceptibility status of major JE vectors from northern West Bengal, toward 4% DDT, 0.05% deltamethrin, and 5% malathion. Two- to three-day-old unfed female mosquitoes were subjected to a susceptibility bioassay using a World Health Organization kit. Corrected mortality (C
