Quantum dots (QDs) hold great potential for applications in nanomedicine, however, their health effects are largely unknown. In the present study, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of CdTe QDs were examined in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The QDs exhibited a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on cell growth. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to study the effect of subinhibitory concentrations of penicillin, chloramphenicol and erythromycin on the mutation rate of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
METHODS: The mutation rate to rifampicin and optochin resistance was estimated using fluctuation analysis in three capsulated S. pneumoniae strains, cultured both with and without different subinhibitory antibiotic concentrations. Hydrogen peroxide-resistant Chinese hamster ovary (CHOR) cells were developed by exposing parental (CHO(P)) cells to sequential increases in H2O2 concentration. Cytotoxicity as well as DNA single-strand breaks induced by Na2CrO4 were then compared in CHOR and CHO(P) cell lines. Using the colony-forming assay, it was found that the cytotoxicity caused by Na2CrO4 did not differ in the parent and resistant cells.
