Deep neural networks integrating genomics and histopathological images for predicting stages and survival time-to-event in colon cancer.

MOTIVATION: There exists an unexplained diverse variation within the predefined colon cancer stages using only features from either genomics or histopathological whole slide images as prognostic factors. Unraveling this variation will bring about improved staging and treatment outcomes. Hence, motivated by the advancement of Deep Neural Network (DNN) libraries and complementary factors within some genomics datasets, we aggregate atypia patterns in histopathological images with diverse carcinogenic expression from mRNA, miRNA and DNA methylation as an integrative input source into a deep neural

Feature fusion method for pulmonary tuberculosis patient detection based on cough sound.

Since the COVID-19, cough sounds have been widely used for screening purposes. Intelligent analysis techniques have proven to be effective in detecting respiratory diseases. In 2021, there were up to 10 million TB-infected patients worldwide, with an annual growth rate of 4.5%. Most of the patients were from economically underdeveloped regions and countries. The PPD test, a common screening method in the community, has a sensitivity of as low as 77%. Although IGRA and Xpert MTB/RIF offer high specificity and sensitivity, their cost makes them less accessible. In this study, we proposed a featu

Sustainable utilization of Fe3O4-modified activated lignite for aqueous phosphate removal and ANN modeling.

Lignites are widely available and cost-effective in many countries. Sustainable methods for their utilization drive innovation, potentially advancing environmental sustainability and resource efficiency. In the present study, Fe3O4 (∼25.1 nm) supported on KOH-activated lignite (A-L) displayed 8 times higher phosphate removal than pristine A-L (67.6 mg/g vs. 8.5 mg/g at pH 5, 50 mg of absorbent in 25 mL of 1500 ppm [phosphate]), owing to its abundant Fe3O4 (10 wt% of Fe) nanoparticle content. The removal occurred within ∼2 h, following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Across pH levels rangi

Accurate detection of gait events using neural networks and IMU data mimicking real-world smartphone usage.

Wearable technologies such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be used to evaluate human gait and improve mobility, but sensor fixation is still a limitation that needs to be addressed. Therefore, aim of this study was to create a machine learning algorithm to predict gait events using a single IMU mimicking the carrying of a smartphone. Fifty-two healthy adults (35 males/17 females) walked on a treadmill at various speeds while carrying a surrogate smartphone in the right hand, front right trouser pocket, and right jacket pocket. Ground-truth gait events (e.g. heel strikes and toe-offs)

Radiation dose estimation with multiple artificial neural networks in dicentric chromosome assay.

PURPOSE: The dicentric chromosome assay (DCA), often referred to as the 'gold standard' in radiation dose estimation, exhibits significant challenges as a consequence of its labor-intensive nature and dependency on expert knowledge. Existing automated technologies face limitations in accurately identifying dicentric chromosomes (DCs), resulting in decreased precision for radiation dose estimation. Furthermore, in the process of identifying DCs through automatic or semi-automatic methods, the resulting distribution could demonstrate under-dispersion or over-dispersion, which results in signific

Unveiling surgical expertise through machine learning in a novel VR/AR spinal simulator: A multilayered approach using transfer learning and connection weights analysis.

BACKGROUND: Virtual and augmented reality surgical simulators, integrated with machine learning, are becoming essential for training psychomotor skills, and analyzing surgical performance. Despite the promise of methods like the Connection Weights Algorithm, the small sample sizes (small number of participants (N)) typical of these trials challenge the generalizability and robustness of models. Approaches like data augmentation and transfer learning from models trained on similar surgical tasks address these limitations. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the efficacy of artificial neural network and

Early childhood household instability, adolescent structural neural network architecture, and young adulthood depression: A 21-year longitudinal study.

Unstable and unpredictable environments are linked to risk for psychopathology, but the underlying neural mechanisms that explain how instability relate to subsequent mental health concerns remain unclear. In particular, few studies have focused on the association between instability and white matter structures despite white matter playing a crucial role for neural development. In a longitudinal sample recruited from a population-based study (N = 237), household instability (residential moves, changes in household composition, caregiver transitions in the first 5 years) was examined in associa

Dual-attention-based recurrent neural network for hand-foot-mouth disease prediction in Korea.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral disease that occurs primarily in children. Meteorological factors have a significant impact on its popularity annually in Korea. This study proposes a new HFMD prediction model using a dual-attention-based recurrent neural network (DA-RNN) and important weather factors for HFMD in Korea. First, suspected cases of HFMD in each state were predicted using meteorological factors from the DA-RNN. Second, the weather factors were divided into six categories: temperature, wind, rainfall, day length, humidity, and air pollution to conduct sensitivity analysis.

Cortical Motion Perception Emerges from Dimensionality Reduction with Evolved Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity Rules.

The nervous system is under tight energy constraints and must represent information efficiently. This is particularly relevant in the dorsal part of the medial superior temporal area (MSTd) in primates where neurons encode complex motion patterns to support a variety of behaviors. A sparse decomposition model based on a dimensionality reduction principle known as non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) was previously shown to account for a wide range of monkey MSTd visual response properties. This model resulted in sparse, parts-based representations that could be regarded as basis flow fields
