A clinical series of 40 consecutive patients with chronic unilateral hyperlucent lung was analysed. Swyer-James (MacLeod) syndrome turned out to be the most common diagnosis (18 patients, 45%). Other causes were localized emphysema (8 patients, 20%), congenital hypoplastic pulmonary artery (4 patients, 10%), previous massive pulmonary embolism (4 patients, 10%), bronchial carcinoma (3 patients, 7.5%), sequelae of radiation therapy (2 patients, 5%) and benign intrabronchial neoplasm (1 patient, 2.5%). The reduction of pulmonary vasculature was scored (0-9). The most extensive reduction was foun

Steady improvement in the diagnostic appraisal of obscure pulmonary and mediastinal disease has permitted more intelligent treatment, better prognosis, and where necessary more accurate assessment of compensability. Open lung biopsy is designed to obtain material for pathological study when there is no pleural, mediastinal, or airway lesion on which to base a working diagnosis.A study of 54 patients in whom lung biopsy was performed at the Toronto General Hospital and Weston Sanatorium is reported. A positive tissue diagnosis was obtained in approximately 75%. The procedure is considered relat

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a major cause of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations. Altho … s frequently observed (7/13, 53.9%). Furthermore, younger age, a history of pneumonia, a history of bronchiolitis, and the absence of breastfeeding were associated with hospitalization.
CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to the previous season, in which RSV was associated with the highest attendance and hospitalization rate, we observed a high burden of RV infections in …

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung allograft dysfunction significantly impairs long-term lung transplant survival. Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome is a chronic lung allograft dysfunction phenotype characterized by fibroproliferative changes in noncartilaginous airways. We previously demonstrated that the tyrosine kinase inhibitor nintedanib reduces chronic airway changes in murine tracheal allografts. In this study, we investigated whether delayed treatment, similar to the clinical scenario following lung transplantation, would still be beneficial.
METHODS: Recipient CBA/JRj mice received orthotopic …

Current literature suggests the potential benefits of nebulized corticosteroids (NCs), particularly budesonide and fluticasone, in the treat … s. Several indications beyond the conventional use of NCs in asthma/COPD were identified, including bronchiolitis, transient tachypnea of the newborn, respiratory complications after endotracheal intubation, croup, meconium aspiration syndrome, chronic rhinosinusitis, and viral wheezing. Overall, the available literature suggests that NCs may have therapeutic a …

Respiratory diseases, including pneumonia, asthma, bronchiolitis, and croup, remain the leading causes of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. Diagnostic challenges persist, especially in low-resource settings lacking specialized tools. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based analysis of cough sounds has emerged as a promising, noninvasive diagnostic alternative. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the predictive ability of AI algorithms for diagnosing specific pediatric respiratory diseases using cough sounds, evaluating their diagnostic performance, clinical applicability, and …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of hospitalization for bronchiolitis in infants worldwide, and age (<6 months) and underlying comorbidities (e.g., prematurity, congenital heart disease) are risk factors for severe disease. However, some centers face challenges in identifying and implementing preventative measures, and best practices, for the care of at-risk infants. Therefore, this study aimed to identify best practice examples in RSV care for neonatal and pediatric populations in leading centers globally, and to understand how these practices can be widely implemented. …

BACKGROUND: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is an important cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in young children. Circulation patterns represent challenges for immunoprophylaxis, requiring tailored interventions to address RSV activity linked to climate. We assessed RSV seasonality across the Americas and its relation to environmental factors and influenza circulation.
METHODS: RSV seasonality was assessed using data reported in 2010-2019 to a multi-country respiratory surveillance network. Time-series analysis identified temporal patterns and trends. Negative binomial, Moving Epidemics M…
