Regulatory RNA Networks in Ovarian Follicular Cysts in Dairy Cows: Implications for Human Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Ovarian follicular cysts (OFCs) in dairy cows represent a significant cause of infertility and share striking similarities with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying OFCs and their relevance to PCOS by profiling differentially expressed (DE) microRNAs (miRNAs) and constructing integrative RNA interaction networks. Methods: Expression analysis of 84 bovine miRNAs was conducted in antral follicular fluid from normal and cystic follicles using miScript PCR arrays. Bioinformatic tools including miRBase, m

Balamuthia mandrillaris amoebic encephalitis mimicking tuberculous meningitis.

A 76-year-old female with no apparent immunosuppressive conditions and no history of exposure to freshwater and international travel presented with headache and nausea 3 weeks before the presentation. On admission, her consciousness was E4V4V6. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed pleocytosis with mononuclear cell predominance, elevated protein, and decreased glucose. Despite antibiotic and antiviral therapy, her consciousness and neck stiffness gradually worsened, right eye-movement restriction appeared, and the right direct light reflex became absent. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed

Effects of Zataria multiflora essential oil on the germinative cells of Echinococcus granulosus.

BACKGROUND: Novel and more efficient compounds are urgently required for medical treatment of cystic echinococcosis (CE). Germinative cell culture of Echinococcus granulosus could be used for anti-echinococcosis agent tests and other biological studies on CE. This study was performed to establish an in vitro cell culture model for E. granulosus germinative cells and to evaluate the lethal effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) on the cultured cells. METHODS: The inner surface of germinal layers of CE cysts was scraped, and the obtained materials were trypsinized to obtain a suspens

Platelet-derived growth factor B restores vascular barrier integrity and diminishes permeability in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Although advances in the prediction and management of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) have been introduced, complete prevention is not yet possible. Previously, we and other authors have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor, angiopoietins (ANGPTs) and sphingosine-1-phosphate are involved in OHSS etiology. In addition, we have demonstrated that ovarian protein levels of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) ligands -B and -D decrease in an OHSS rat model, whilst PDGFR-β and ANGPT2 remain unchanged. In the present work, we investigated the role of PDGF-B in OHSS by evaluating l

Case Report: Acute Hydrops with Descemet Membrane Schisis in Corneal Ectasia after Radial Keratotomy.

SIGNIFICANCE: As patients with previous radial keratotomy (RK) are still occasionally encountered, recognition of the anatomy of post-RK corneas and management of their complications remain relevant. High-definition anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) is a very useful tool to assess these postsurgical corneas. PURPOSE: To describe a case of acute corneal hydrops with Descemet membrane schisis after RK with observation by AS-OCT. CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old woman presented with a 9-day history of sudden vision loss, foreign body sensation, and photophobia in her left eye. Sh

Clinical features, epidemiology, and therapy of lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a multisystem disease of women, characterized by proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle-like LAM cells, leading to the formation of lung cysts, fluid-filled cystic structures in the axial lymphatics (eg, lymphangioleiomyomas), and renal angiomyolipomas. LAM is caused by mutations of the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, which encode, respectively, hamartin and tuberin, two proteins with a major role in control of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. LAM occurs sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex, an autosomal-dominant syndr

Epidemiology, pathophysiology, and the future of ocular toxoplasmosis.

Despite large advances in the field of ocular toxoplasmosis, large gaps still exist in our knowledge concerning the epidemiology and pathophysiology of this potentially blinding infectious disease. Although ocular toxoplasmosis is considered to have a high health burden, still little is known about its exact prevalence and how it affects the quality of life. The epidemiology of toxoplasmosis depends on local habits throughout the globe, and changes are likely in view of increased meat consumption in developing countries and demands for higher animal welfare in the Western world. Water is incre

Clinical and histopathological alterations of lymphangioleiomyomatosis in 14 Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease that predominantly affects young females. It is considered as an "orphan" life-threatening disease of unknown etiology, with uncertain clinical prognosis, and no effective treatment. LAM can arise sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), an autosomal inherited syndrome characterized by hamartoma-like tumor growth and pathologic features that are distinct from manifestations of pulmonary LAM. The clinical course of LAM is characterized by progressive dyspnea on exertion, recurrent pneumothorax, and chylous

[Usefulness of CD1 expression on surfaces of cells in bronchoalveolar fluid for diagnosis of histiocytosis X--our experience].

Histiocytosis X (HX), also referred as Langerhans cell granulomatosis is a disorder characterized by the presence of destructive granulomas containing Langerhans cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils and fibroblastes in the involved organs. Three presentations are commonly observed: 1) nonproductive cough or effort dyspnea, 2) spontaneous pneumothorax 3) incidental pulmonary infiltrates on chest X-ray in asymptomatic patients. HRCT may be helpful in the initial diagnosis of pulmonary HX. HRCT scans show nodules, cysts and estimate the extent of disease. But the final diagnosis of histiocytosis X req

[Open laser surgery on the locomotor apparatus].

The first applications of laser in surgery of the locomotor apparatus in the early 1980s used the haemostatic properties of laser to diminish the amount of substitution of coagulation factors in haemophiliac patients. Only since the early 1990s has a device been available in corporating the pulsed holmium:YAG laser which works in a fluid medium without relevant side effects. Apart from haemostasis, the cutting function and tissue ablation, together with the thermal shrinking effect, are exploited in arthroscopy and percutaneous disc decompression. Now that the biophysical mechanisms of action

Epidemiologic study and control of Taenia solium infections with praziquantel in a rural village of Mexico.

This study reports the results of an epidemiologic survey for the detection of Taenia solium in a rural village of 559 inhabitants in Sinaloa, Mexico, as well as a large scale treatment of the population with praziquantel. The study was carried out in two stages. In stage 1, serial stool analysis of 392 persons detected a cluster of three T. solium tapeworms. A fourth T. solium tapeworm was detected through a household census, giving a 1.32% prevalence rate for this helminth. Over 70% of the population over five years of age was treated with a 10 mg/kg dose of praziquantel, and no additional t

Hemorrhagic ovarian follicles in llamas.

The ovaries of 74 llamas were examined daily by transrectal ultrasonography for at least 30 d. Hemorrhagic follicles were observed in 13 (18%) llamas (incidence per anovulatory dominant follicle, 16%). The proportion of llamas in which a hemorrhagic follicle was detected was different among groups (nonmated, 8/25; mated to a vasectomized male, 4/21; mated to an intact male, nonpregnant, 1/10; mated to an intact male, pregnant, 0/18; P<0.05). A hemorrhagic follicle, observed grossly after ovariectomy, was large (13 mm) and fluctuant, with a thin translucent wall and dark red contents. No ovulat

Accidental hyperstimulation during ovulation induction.

Clinical hyperstimulation is the most serious complication of ovulation induction, occurring in approximately 3% of cases (0.8% in the severe form). Paradoxically, it seems to be rare following in vitro fertilization, probably because all the follicles are aspirated. High-risk patients are those with polycystic ovarian disease, hyperprolactinaemia and hypothyroidism. All forms of ovulation induction have been implicated. Use of LHRH agonists have not reduced the incidence of hyperstimulation and they may even have increased it. An ongoing pregnancy seems to predispose to the occurrence of hype

Sonography of chronic pancreatitis.

Morphologic alterations detectable by US in CP may be schematically classified as: (1) size increase or decrease; (2) variations in shape with particular regard to contour irregularities; (3) changes in the parenchymal echo-texture; (4) presence of calcifications; (5) dilatation of the MPD; (6) presence of fluid collections; (7) dilatation of the biliary tree; and (8) obstruction of the portal venous system. These findings are associated in various combinations and occur with differing frequencies. Changes in pancreatic size may be found in many physiologic and pathologic conditions other than

Steroidogenesis in human polycystic ovary.

Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is a heterogenous condition with a broad clinical and pathologic spectrum that may reflect the effects of diverse etiologic factors. Depending on the diagnostic data available from patients, various steroidogenic enzyme blocks have been postulated, mostly implicating higher-than-normal production of circulating delta 4-androstenedione, testosterone, and, in some cases, dehydroisoandrosterone. These high levels of androgens, because of their peripheral conversion to estrogens, lead to inappropriate secretion of gonadotropins in PCOD. Whatever may be the etiolog

Monoclonal antibody against human ovarian tumor-associated antigens.

Mouse monoclonal antibodies (OV-TL 3) were raised against human ovarian tumor-associated antigens for diagnostic purposes. A cloned hybridoma cell line was obtained by fusion of murine myeloma cells with spleen lymphocytes from BALB/c mice immunized with a tumor cell suspension prepared from an ovarian endometrioid carcinoma. The antibodies were initially screened for their ability to bind on frozen sections of human ovarian carcinoma tissue and a negative reaction on gastric carcinoma tissue by indirect immunofluorescence. The reactivity of the selected OV-TL 3 clone (IgG1 subclass) was studi

Ovarian Torsion in Normal Ovaries in Reproductive-Aged Women.

Ovarian torsion is a gynecological emergency caused by the rotation of an ovary on its supporting ligaments, which can obstruct blood flow and lead to ovarian necrosis if untreated. Typically, torsion is associated with ovaries enlarged by cysts or masses, which increase the likelihood of rotation around the supporting ligaments. Although torsion can also occur in normal ovaries, especially in premenarchal girls with elongated infundibulopelvic ligaments, literature on this occurrence in reproductive-aged women is limited. This report presents two cases of ovarian torsion in normal ovaries, hi
