Thorsellia dominance and bacterial community structure in two major malaria vectors: an exploratory study in Northwestern Argentina.

Malaria continues to be one of the major global health burdens despite worldwide efforts to reduce its incidence and prevalence. Recent technological advances have generated new mosquito-control alternatives, one of which involves the use of symbionts that are part of the core gut microbiota to develop paratransgenesis strategies. This exploratory study characterized the bacterial community of Anopheles argyritarsis and Anopheles pseudopunctipennis across three environments: Iruya River (mountain forest), Conchas River (transitional zone), and Chirimayo River (agricultural landscape). Through

Effects of Edaravone on Recovery of the Facial Nerve After Crush Injury: Original Study-Brief Clinical.

In traumatic peripheral facial nerve paralysis, the risk of permanent sequelae remains high despite current surgical and medical treatments. Edaravone is a free radical scavenger with antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties; however, its efficacy in facial nerve injury has not yet been established. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of edaravone on facial nerve recovery following crush injury in a rat model. Thirty rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=10 per group): group 1 (saline-treated control), group 2 (methylprednisolone-treated), and group 3 (edaravone-treated). Facial paral

Soft Selective Sweeps Predominate in the Yellow Fever Mosquito Aedes aegypti.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a vector for human arboviruses and zoonotic diseases and therefore poses a serious threat to public health. Understanding how Ae. aegypti adapts to environmental pressures-such as insecticides-is critical for developing effective mitigation strategies. However, most traditional methods for detecting recent positive selection search for signatures of classic "hard" selective sweeps, and to date no studies have examined soft sweeps in Ae. aegypti. This is a significant limitation as this is vital information for understanding the pace of adaptation-populations that

Efficacy of an oral combination of moxidectin, afoxolaner, and pyrantel pamoate for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs.

Dirofilaria immitis, the mosquito-borne agent of dirofilariosis, a chronic and sometimes fatal cardiopulmonary canine disease, is endemic in most warm and temperate regions in the world. The efficacy of an oral endectoparasiticide product (test product or TP) combining moxidectin, afoxolaner, and pyrantel pamoate was evaluated for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs, in two laboratory and one field studies. In each laboratory study, 20 D. immitis-naïve beagle dogs were experimentally infected with D. immitis. Ten control dogs were sham-treated, and ten dogs were administered the TP tar

A facile microfluidic chip design for DNA detection using dengue serotypes as a proof-of-concept case study.

Dengue fever is caused by any of the four serotypes of dengue viruses, DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4 spread by mosquito bites and is important to distinguish between them due to lack of cross-protective neutralizing antibodies for each serotype. Secondary infections also put individuals at higher risk for severe dengue illness than those who have not been previously infected. Current preferred assays include reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) and ELISA. To enable on-field diagnosis of dengue serotypes, the detection process would need to be simplified or at least semi-automated. A downstre

Genetic diversity and population structure of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum surface protein Pfs47 in isolates from the lowlands in Western Kenya.

Plasmodium falciparum parasites have evolved genetic adaptations to overcome immune responses mounted by diverse Anopheles vectors hindering malaria control efforts. Plasmodium falciparum surface protein Pfs47 is critical in the parasite's survival by manipulating the vector's immune system hence a promising target for blocking transmission in the mosquito. This study aimed to examine the genetic diversity, haplotype distribution, and population structure of Pfs47 and its implications on malaria infections in endemic lowlands in Western Kenya. Cross-sectional mass blood screening was conducted

Larvicidal activity of Ocimum campechianum, Ocotea quixos and Piper aduncum essential oils against Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti, the main arbovirus vector of the Yellow fever, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses, is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. Preventive control efforts have been implemented worldwide aimed at reducing its impact on human health. The recent reduction of chemicals available for vector control due to their negative impact on the environment and human health and the increase in mosquito resistance to insecticides have driven the research community to identify and evaluate sustainable alternatives to synthetic insecticides. In this study, the po

Respondents indicated a general preference for a person-affecting intervention (mosquito control) over an impersonal intervention (contraception). However, their responses did not appear to be strongly influenced by the non-identity problem. Characteristics of asymptomatic Plasmodium spp. parasitaemia in Kwahu-Mpraeso, a malaria endemic mountainous district in Ghana, West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control efforts in Ghana have reduced the countrywide average malaria prevalence from 71% in 2000 to about 51% in 2012; however, its main focus is on symptomatic malaria. If further progress is to be made, parasite reservoirs in asymptomatic carriers need to be moved into focus. This study profiles asymptomatic Plasmodium spp. parasitaemia amongst residents of mountainous Kwahu-Mpraeso in the Eastern region of Ghana. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 360 residents was carried out from October to December 2013. This included recording demographics, malaria testing of asym

Insect Repellants During Pregnancy in the Era of the Zika Virus.

Health care providers must be equipped to provide appropriate advice to reproductive-aged patients for protection against the potentially devastating consequences of prenatal Zika virus exposure. The goal of this commentary is to summarize what is known about the safety and toxicity of N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) as a topical insect repellant and the pyrethroid permethrin for treatment of fabric, endorsed in the fight against Zika virus. Reviews assessing the safety and toxicity of DEET conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agen

Epidemiology of Plasmodium vivax Malaria in Peru.

Malaria in Peru, dominated by Plasmodium vivax, remains a public health problem. The 1990s saw newly epidemic malaria emerge, primarily in the Loreto Department in the Amazon region, including areas near to Iquitos, the capital city, but sporadic malaria transmission also occurred in the 1990s-2000s in both north-coastal Peru and the gold mining regions of southeastern Peru. Although a Global Fund-supported intervention (PAMAFRO, 2005-2010) was temporally associated with a decrease of malaria transmission, from 2012 to the present, both P. vivax and Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases have rap

Epidemiology and Control of Plasmodium vivax in Afghanistan.

Around half of the population of Afghanistan resides in areas at risk of malaria transmission. Two species of malaria (Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum) account for a high burden of disease-in 2011, there were more than 300,000 confirmed cases. Around 80-95% of malaria is P. vivax Transmission is seasonal and focal, below 2,000 m in altitude, and in irrigated areas which allow breeding of anopheline mosquito vectors. Malaria risk is stratified to improve targeting of interventions. Sixty-three of 400 districts account for ∼85% of cases, and are the target of more intense control effo

Roles of PKC and phospho-adducin in transepithelial fluid secretion by Malpighian tubules of the yellow fever mosquito.

The diuretic hormone aedeskinin-III is known to increase the paracellular Cl- conductance in Malpighian (renal) tubules of the mosquito Aedes aegypti via a G protein-coupled receptor. The increase serves the blood-meal-initiated diuresis and is associated with elevated levels of Ca2+ and phosphorylated adducin in the cytosol of tubule. In the present study we have cloned adducin in Aedes Malpighian tubules and investigated its physiological roles. Immunolabeling experiments are consistent with the association of adducin with the cortical cytoskeleton, especially near the apical brush border of

Discovery of antagonists of tick dopamine receptors via chemical library screening and comparative pharmacological analyses.

Ticks transmit a wide variety of disease causing pathogens to humans and animals. Considering the global health impact of tick-borne diseases, there is a pressing need to develop new methods for vector control. We are exploring arthropod dopamine receptors as novel targets for insecticide/acaricide development because of their integral roles in neurobiology. Herein, we developed a screening assay for dopamine receptor antagonists to further characterize the pharmacological properties of the two D₁-like dopamine receptors (Isdop1 and Isdop2) identified in the Lyme disease vector, Ixodes scapula

Emergence and re-emergence of viral diseases of the central nervous system.

Neurologic disease is a major cause of disability in resource-poor countries and a substantial portion of this disease is due to infections of the CNS. A wide variety of emerging and re-emerging viruses contribute to this disease burden. New emerging infections are commonly due to RNA viruses that have expanded their geographic range, spread from animal reservoirs or acquired new neurovirulence properties. Mosquito-borne viruses with expanding ranges include West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus and Chikungunya virus. Zoonotic viruses that have recently crossed into humans to cause neur

Larvicidal Effect of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit. Essential Oil Nanoemulsion on Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes can be vectors of pathogens and transmit diseases to both animals and humans. Species of the genus Culex are part of the cycle of neglected diseases, especially Culex quinquefasciatus, which is an anthropophilic vector of lymphatic filariasis. Natural products can be an alternative to synthetic insecticides for vector control; however, the main issue is the poor water availability of some compounds from plant origin. In this context, nanoemulsions are kinetic stable delivery systems of great interest for lipophilic substances. The objective of this study was to investigate the larvi

Qualitative Analysis of the Transmission Dynamics of Dengue with the Effect of Memory, Reinfection, and Vaccination.

Dengue fever has a huge impact on people's physical, social, and economic lives in low-income locations worldwide. Researchers use epidemic models to better understand the transmission patterns of dengue fever in order to recommend effective preventative measures and give data for vaccine and treatment development. We use fractional calculus to organise the transmission phenomena of dengue fever, including immunisation, reinfection, therapy, and asymptotic carriers. In addition, we focused our study on the dynamical behavior and qualitative approach of dengue infection. The existence and uniqu

Towards integrated surveillance-response systems for the prevention of future pandemics.

Most human pathogens originate from non-human hosts and certain pathogens persist in animal reservoirs. The transmission of such pathogens to humans may lead to self-sustaining chains of transmission. These pathogens represent the highest risk for future pandemics. For their prevention, the transmission over the species barrier - although rare - should, by all means, be avoided. In the current COVID-19 pandemic, surprisingly though, most of the current research concentrates on the control by drugs and vaccines, while comparatively little scientific inquiry focuses on future prevention. Already

Recent advances in understanding dengue.

This is a selective review of recent publications on dengue clinical features, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and vaccine development placed in a context of observations made over the past half century. Four dengue viruses (DENVs) are transmitted by urban cycle mosquitoes causing diseases whose nature and severity are influenced by interacting factors such as virus, age, immune status of the host, and human genetic variability. A phenomenon that controls the kinetics of DENV infection, antibody-dependent enhancement, best explains the correlation of the vascular permeability syndrome with second

West Nile virus infection.

PURPOSE: The epidemiology, virology, and transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) are reviewed, and the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of WNV infection are examined. SUMMARY: WNV infection is caused by a flavivirus transmitted from birds to humans through the bite of culicine mosquitoes. WNV was discovered in the blood of a febrile woman from Uganda's West Nile province in 1937. The first case of domestically acquired WNV infection was reported in the United States in 1999 in New York. Since then, WNV infection has spread rapidly across the United States, with 9306 confirmed cases a
