Growth, development and differentiation: a functional food science approach.

Few other aspects of food supply and metabolism are of greater biological importance than the feeding of mothers during pregnancy and lactation, and of their infants and young children. Nutritional factors during early development not only have short-term effects on growth, body composition and body functions but also exert long-term effects on health, disease and mortality risks in adulthood, as well as development of neural functions and behaviour, a phenomenon called 'metabolic programming'. The interaction of nutrients and gene expression may form the basis of many of these programming eff

A new strategic neurosurgical planning tool for brainstem cavernous malformations using interactive computer graphics with multimodal fusion images.

OBJECT: In this study, the authors used preoperative simulation employing 3D computer graphics (interactive computer graphics) to fuse all imaging data for brainstem cavernous malformations. The authors evaluated whether interactive computer graphics or 2D imaging correlated better with the actual operative field, particularly in identifying a developmental venous anomaly (DVA). METHODS: The study population consisted of 10 patients scheduled for surgical treatment of brainstem cavernous malformations. Data from preoperative imaging (MRI, CT, and 3D rotational angiography) were automatically

Neurophysiological Monitoring During Arteriovenous Malformation Embolization.

BACKGROUND: Neurophysiological monitoring (NPM) is frequently performed during arteriovenous malformation (AVM) embolization. However, the ability of NPM to predict neurological deficits or improve surgical decision making in this setting has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To review our use of NPM during AVM embolization to better define its utility. METHODS: We retrospectively examined AVM embolization cases from 2004 to 2017. We recorded patient and AVM characteristics as well as outcomes. We then reviewed NPM results from each case, including somatosensory evoked potentials and electroencep

Inducible production of interferon-gamma in the developing brain causes cerebellar dysplasia with activation of the Sonic hedgehog pathway.

Here we examined the role of interferon (IFN)-gamma in regulating the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway and cerebellar development in bigenic mice with temporal control of IFN-gamma gene expression driven by a tetracycline-controllable promoter. In IFN-gamma-expressing but not age-matched non-IFN-gamma-expressing bigenic or control mice, development of the cerebellum was severely affected with the persistence and extensive proliferation of the external granule neuron layer (EGL) and infiltration with modest numbers of T-lymphocytes. Following induction of IFN-gamma transgene expression, both total

[-Anticoagulant drugs-].

In todays medicine, anticoagulant drugs like heparin and coumadin derivatives have become indispensable for the treatment of thrombo-embolic diseases. Heparin, consisting of long poly-sulfated polysaccharide chains of variable length and sequences is mostly derived from porcine mucosa. Its bioavailability by other than the parenteral way of administration is almost negligible. Therefore, with only few exceptions, it is almost exclusively applied in hospitalized patients (short-term therapy) or to bridge 2 phases of treatment with oral anticoagulant drugs. Today, besides the conventional high-m

Expression and significance of miR-9-5p and GCH1 in neonates with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is one of the most common respiratory disorders in preterm infants, associated with short- and long-term complications involving the respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems, posing a major challenge in neonatal medicine. miR-9-5p has recently garnered attention for its role in lung diseases, including asthma and acute lung injury. The pathogenesis of these two diseases shares similarities with that of BPD, particularly regarding inflammatory responses and oxidative stress mechanisms. However, there are currently no clinical studies explorin

[Research advances in the transplacental transfer efficiencies of environmental pollutants].

Industrialization has led to significant increases in the types and quantities of pollutants, with environmental pollutants widely present in various media, including the air, food, and everyday items. These pollutants can enter the human body via multiple pathways, including ingestion through food and absorption through the skin; this intrusion can disrupt the production, release, and circulation of hormones in the body, resulting in a range of illnesses that affect the reproductive, endocrine, and nervous systems. Consequently, these pollutants pose substantial risks to human health. In part

Sonic Hedgehog Agonist Protects Against Complex Neonatal Cerebellar Injury.

The cerebellum undergoes rapid growth during the third trimester and is vulnerable to injury and deficient growth in infants born prematurely. Factors associated with preterm cerebellar hypoplasia include chronic lung disease and postnatal glucocorticoid administration. We modeled chronic hypoxemia and glucocorticoid administration in neonatal mice to study whole cerebellar and cell type-specific effects of dual exposure. Chronic neonatal hypoxia resulted in permanent cerebellar hypoplasia. This was compounded by administration of prednisolone as shown by greater volume loss and Purkinje cell

A mutation in SNAP29, coding for a SNARE protein involved in intracellular trafficking, causes a novel neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by cerebral dysgenesis, neuropathy, ichthyosis, and palmoplantar keratoderma.

Neurocutaneous syndromes represent a vast, largely heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by neurological and dermatological manifestations, reflecting the common embryonic origin of epidermal and neural tissues. In the present report, we describe a novel neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by cerebral dysgenesis, neuropathy, ichthyosis, and keratoderma (CEDNIK syndrome). Using homozygosity mapping in two large families, we localized the disease gene to 22q11.2 and identified, in all patients, a 1-bp deletion in SNAP29, which codes for a SNARE protein involved in vesicle fusion. SNAP

Human wild-type tau interacts with wingless pathway components and produces neurofibrillary pathology in Drosophila.

Pathologic alterations in the microtubule-associated protein tau have been implicated in a number of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here, we show that tau overexpression, in combination with phosphorylation by the Drosophila glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) homolog and wingless pathway component (Shaggy), exacerbated neurodegeneration induced by tau overexpression alone, leading to neurofibrillary pathology in the fly. Furthermore, manipulation of other wingless signaling molecules down

The Role of Phase-Contrast MRI in Diagnosing Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow Abnormalities.

Background Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics play a crucial role in maintaining the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS). Any disruption in CSF flow can lead to various congenital and acquired conditions, impacting neurological function and overall health. This study aims to analyze the significance of phase-contrast MRI in evaluating abnormalities in CSF flow and its diagnostic utility in various CSF-related disorders. Phase contrast MRI has emerged as a valuable tool for evaluating CSF dynamics non-invasively by examining CSF flow characteristics such as pulsatile flow patterns,

Transgenic mouse in vivo library of human Down syndrome critical region 1: association between DYRK1A overexpression, brain development abnormalities, and cell cycle protein alteration.

Down syndrome is the most frequent genetic cause of mental retardation, having an incidence of 1 in 700 live births. In the present study we used a transgenic mouse in vivo library consisting of 4 yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) transgenic mouse lines, each bearing a different fragment of the Down syndrome critical region 1 (DCR-1), implicated in brain abnormalities characterizing this pathology. The 152F7 fragment, in addition to genes also located on the other DCR-1 fragments, bears the DYRK1A gene, encoding for a serine-threonine kinase. The neurobehavioral analysis of these mouse lines s

Expression and chromosomal localization of KIAA0369, a putative kinase structurally related to Doublecortin.

Neuropathy in vertebrates can be a consequence of failure of genes involved in the nervous system to be expressed at the correct times and levels during embryonic life. Recently, a brain specific gene, Doublecortin, was cloned and was shown to have mutations in X-linked lissencephaly and double cortex syndrome. KIAA0369 is a putative kinase that is structurally related to Doublecortin. We compared the expression of KIAA0369 with that of Doublecortin, both of which were expressed specifically or predominantly in fetal brain among 20 different tissues examined. The deduced products of both genes

MN1 C-terminal truncation syndrome is a novel neurodevelopmental and craniofacial disorder with partial rhombencephalosynapsis.

MN1 encodes a transcriptional co-regulator without homology to other proteins, previously implicated in acute myeloid leukaemia and development of the palate. Large deletions encompassing MN1 have been reported in individuals with variable neurodevelopmental anomalies and non-specific facial features. We identified a cluster of de novo truncating mutations in MN1 in a cohort of 23 individuals with strikingly similar dysmorphic facial features, especially midface hypoplasia, and intellectual disability with severe expressive language delay. Imaging revealed an atypical form of rhombencephalosyn

Lissencephaly and the molecular basis of neuronal migration.

Migration of post-mitotic neurons from the ventricular zone to the cortical plate during embryogenesis comprises one of the most critical stages in brain development. Deficiency of this process often results in major brain malformations, including human lissencephaly (smooth brain). Since discovery of the first genetic cause of lissencephaly, deletions of chromosome 17p13.3 in Miller-Dieker syndrome, rapid progress in our understanding of neuronal migration has been made based on advances in both brain imaging technology and molecular genetics. This progress has resulted in a new system of cla

Variability of the cranial and dental phenotype in Williams syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare congenital disorder involving the cardiovascular system, connective tissue, and the central nervous system, resulting in mild to moderate mental retardation, a specific cognitive profile, unique personality characteristics, distinctive facial features, and cardiovascular disease. The majority of individuals with a clinical diagnosis of WS have a contiguous gene deletion at chromosome 7 (7q11.23). Physical features include characteristic facial features with full prominent cheeks, wide mouth, long philtrum, small nose with depressed nasal bridge, h

Tsc2 null murine neuroepithelial cells are a model for human tuber giant cells, and show activation of an mTOR pathway.

Cortical tubers are developmental brain malformations in the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) that cause epilepsy and autism in TSC patients whose pathogenesis is uncertain. Tsc2 null murine neuroepithelial progenitor (NEP) cells display persistent growth when growth factors are withdrawn, express GFAP at high levels, and have reduced expression of a set of early neuronal lineage markers. Tsc2 null NEP cells exhibit aberrant differentiation into giant cells that express both beta III-tubulin and GFAP and that are morphologically similar to giant cells in human tubers. Tsc2 null giant cells and

Effects of bromantan on offspring maturation and development of reflexes.

Bromantan (N-[2-adamantil]-N-[para-bromphenyl]amine) is an "actoprotective" drug widely used in Russia as a muscle performance-enhancing agent for sportsmen and as an immunostimulator in medicine. Experiments were conducted to determine whether this compound has adverse effects on the reproduction and development of offspring. Sexually mature female rats, weighing 180-200 g, were orally given bromantan at doses of 30 mg/kg (30-mg/kg group), 150 mg/kg (150-mg/kg group) and 600 mg/kg (600-mg/kg group) daily for 16 days, while the controls received the vehicle, amylaceous solution. Afterwards, tr

Sydenham's chorea in western Pennsylvania.

OBJECTIVE: Chorea is characterized by involuntary, fleeting, irregular, nonrhythmic movements that flow from 1 body region to another. There are many causes of childhood chorea, including cerebrovascular accidents, collagen vascular diseases, drug intoxication, hyperthyroidism, Wilson's disease, Huntington's disease, and infectious agents. Although Sydenham's chorea (SC), a nonsuppurative sequela of group A streptococcal infection, is known to be a common cause of chorea, multiple laboratory and radiographic studies are often obtained to determine the cause of pediatric chorea. We conducted a
