Deep neural networks reveal topic-level representations of sentences in medial prefrontal cortex, lateral anterior temporal lobe, precuneus, and angular gyrus.

When reading a sentence, individual words can be combined to create more complex meaning. In this study, we sought to uncover brain regions that reflect the representation of the meaning of sentences at the topic level, as opposed to the meaning of their individual constituent words when considered irrespective of their context. Using fMRI, we recorded the neural activity of participants while reading sentences. We constructed a topic-level sentence representations using the final layer of a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained to classify Wikipedia sentences into broad semantic categori

Antemortem detection of Parkinson's disease pathology in peripheral biopsies using artificial intelligence.

The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging at all stages due to variable symptomatology, comorbidities, and mimicking conditions. Postmortem assessment remains the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis. While it is well recognized that PD manifests pathologically in the central nervous system with aggregation of α-synuclein as Lewy bodies and neurites, similar Lewy-type synucleinopathy (LTS) is additionally found in the peripheral nervous system that may be useful as an antemortem biomarker. We have previously found that detection of LTS in submandibular gland (SMG) biopsies i

Possibilities of Multilayer Perceptron in Complexing Risk Factors of Diabetic Foot Syndrome.

The levels of markers of endothelial dysfunction, MMP9, and polymorphisms of genes of vascular tone regulation factors, platelet receptors, vascular wall remodeling and prothrombotic factors, and markers of endothelial dysfunction were studied in patients with complicated and uncomplicated diabetes mellitus. It was found that the neural network analysis of these data makes it possible to predict the development of diabetic foot syndrome with an accuracy of 92.9%. The high accuracy of neural network analysis is due to the multifactorial nature of the diabetic foot syndrome.

An artificial neural network model based on autophagy-related genes in childhood systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Childhood systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a multisystemic, life-threatening autoimmune disease. Compared to adults, SLE in childhood is more active, can cause multisystem involvement including renal, neurological and hematological, and can cause cumulative damage across systems more rapidly. Autophagy, one of the core functions of cells, is involved in almost every process of the immune response and has been shown to be associated with many autoimmune diseases, being a key factor in the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity. Autophagy influences the onset, progressi

Automated classification of cyclic alternating pattern sleep phases in healthy and sleep-disordered subjects using convolutional neural network.

Sleep contributes to more than a third of a person's life, making sleep monitoring essential for overall well-being. Cyclic alternating patterns (CAP) are crucial in monitoring sleep quality and associated illnesses such as insomnia, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE), narcolepsy, etc. However, traditionally medical specialists practice manual division techniques of CAP phases which are sensitive to human weariness and inaccuracies. This might result in a false sleep stage diagnosis. This study proposes an automated approach using a deep learning model based on a 1-dimensional convolutiona

Estimation of Cerebral Blood Flow and Arterial Transit Time From Multi-Delay Arterial Spin Labeling MRI Using a Simulation-Based Supervised Deep Neural Network.

BACKGROUND: An inherently poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) causes inaccuracy and less precision in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and arterial transit time (ATT) when using arterial spin labeling (ASL). Deep neural network (DNN)-based parameter estimation can solve these problems. PURPOSE: To reduce the effects of Rician noise on ASL parameter estimation and compute unbiased CBF and ATT using simulation-based supervised DNNs. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: One million simulation test data points, 17 healthy volunteers (five women and 12 men, 33.2 ± 14.6 years of age), and one patient wit

Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Brain Hemodynamic Predictions Using Medical Imaging.

Determining brain hemodynamics plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of various cerebrovascular diseases. In this work, we put forth a physics-informed deep learning framework that augments sparse clinical measurements with one-dimensional (1D) reduced-order model (ROM) simulations to generate physically consistent brain hemodynamic parameters with high spatiotemporal resolution. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound is one of the most common techniques in the current clinical workflow that enables noninvasive and instantaneous evaluation of blood flow velocity within the cerebr

A preliminary study of sperm identification in microdissection testicular sperm extraction samples with deep convolutional neural networks.

Sperm identification and selection is an essential task when processing human testicular samples for in vitro fertilization. Locating and identifying sperm cell(s) in human testicular biopsy samples is labor intensive and time consuming. We developed a new computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA) system, which utilizes deep learning for near human-level performance on testicular sperm extraction (TESE), trained on a custom dataset. The system automates the identification of sperm in testicular biopsy samples. A dataset of 702 de-identified images from testicular biopsy samples of 30 patients was c

Prediction the performance of multistage moving bed biological process using artificial neural network (ANN).

Complexity, uncertainty, and high dynamic nature of nutrient removal through biological processes (BPs) makes it difficult to model and control these processes, forcing designers to rely on approximations, probabilities, and assumptions. To cope with this difficult task and perform an effective and well-controlled BP operation, an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm was developed to simulate, model, and control a three-stage (anaerobic/anoxic and MBBR) enhanced nutrient removal biological process (ENR-BP) challenging real wastewater. Decidual Vasculopathy Identification in Whole Slide Images Using Multiresolution Hierarchical Convolutional Neural Networks.

After a child is born, the examination of the placenta by a pathologist for abnormalities, such as infection or maternal vascular malperfusion, can provide important information about the immediate and long-term health of the infant. Detection of the pathologic placental blood vessel lesion decidual vasculopathy (DV) has been shown to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preeclampsia, which can lead to mother and neonatal morbidity in subsequent pregnancies. Intelligent classification of platelet aggregates by agonist type.

Platelets are anucleate cells in blood whose principal function is to stop bleeding by forming aggregates for hemostatic reactions. In addition to their participation in physiological hemostasis, platelet aggregates are also involved in pathological thrombosis and play an important role in inflammation, atherosclerosis, and cancer metastasis. The aggregation of platelets is elicited by various agonists, but these platelet aggregates have long been considered indistinguishable and impossible to classify. Here we present an intelligent method for classifying them by agonist type. It is based on

Identification of Catecholamine Neurotransmitters Using a Fluorescent Electronic Tongue.

Catecholamine neurotransmitters, specifically, dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP), and norepinephrine (NE), are known as substantial indicators of various neurological diseases. Developing rapid detection methods capable of simultaneously screening their concentrations is highly desired for early clinical diagnosis of such diseases. To this aim, we have designed an optical sensor array using three fluorescent dyes with distinct emission bands and have monitored variations in their emission profiles upon the addition of DA, EP, and NE in the presence of gold ions. Because of the different reducing

Family member information extraction via neural sequence labeling models with different tag schemes.

BACKGROUND: Family history information (FHI) described in unstructured electronic health records (EHRs) is a valuable information source for patient care and scientific researches. Since FHI is usually described in the format of free text, the entire process of FHI extraction consists of various steps including section segmentation, family member and clinical observation extraction, and relation discovery between the extracted members and their observations. The extraction step involves the recognition of FHI concepts along with their properties such as the family side attribute of the family

Multiscale deep neural network based analysis of FDG-PET images for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases with a commonly seen prodromal mild cognitive impairment (MCI) phase where memory loss is the main complaint progressively worsening with behavior issues and poor self-care. However, not all individuals clinically diagnosed with MCI progress to AD. A fraction of subjects with MCI either progress to non-AD dementia or remain stable at the MCI stage without progressing to dementia. Although a curative treatment of AD is currently unavailable, it is extremely important to correctly identify the individuals in the MCI ph
