This is a blinded, retrospective, correlative study of classification of leprosy by cytomorphology, clinical examination, and bacterial density. One hundred consecutive adequate aspirates from skin lesions of leprosy were studied. The Ridley-Jopling (R-J) five-group classification system was used. This study consists of 959 consecutive patients in whom endoscopic biopsies were taken according to a protocol that permitted mapping and measurement of epithelial types in the gastroesophageal region. The epithelial types were classified as normal (oxyntic and squamous) and questionably abnormal (oxyntocardiac, cardiac, intestinal) by strict histologic criteria. The morphology of calcaneal fractures in 9 adolescents (mean age 13.4 years) with 10 fractures were classified using plain films and computed tomography scans. The patterns were found to be similar to those in adults. All except one of the fractures (which was not significantly displaced) were treated with open reduction and internal fixation.
