Severe cyclones and sex-specific birth outcomes in Queensland, Australia: An interrupted time-series analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A male is less adaptable to biological stressors than a female fetus with consequent higher morbidity and mortality. Adverse birth outcomes increase and male livebirths decrease after environmental disasters, economic crises, and terrorist events. We hypothesized the ratio of male to female livebirths would decrease in areas affected by severe tropical cyclones (TCs) in Queensland, Australia. Additionally, in male livebirths, there would be an increase in preterm and low birthweight births. Lastly, we hypothesized that the pregnancy stage at which exposure occurred would modify the

Public attitudes to, and behaviours taken during, hot weather by vulnerable groups: results from a national survey in England.

BACKGROUND: Hot weather leads to increased illness and deaths. The Heatwave Plan for England (HWP) aims to protect the population by raising awareness of the dangers of hot weather, especially for those most vulnerable. Individuals at increased risk to the effects of heat include older adults, particularly 75+, and those with specific chronic conditions, such as diabetes, respiratory and heart conditions. The HWP recommends specific protective actions which relate to five heat-health alert levels (levels 0-4). This study examines the attitudes to hot weather of adults in England, and the prote

Supervisors' perceptions of organizational policies are associated with their likelihood to accommodate back-injured workers.

Background Low back pain (LBP) is a major concern among North American workplaces and little is known regarding a supervisor's decision to support job accommodation for workers with LBP. The extent to which supervisors are included in a company's effort to institute disability management policies and practices and workplace safety climate are two factors that may influence a supervisor's decision to accommodate workers with LBP. Objective Determine the association between supervisors' perceptions of disability management policies, corporate safety culture and their likelihood of supporting job

Reducing the future threat from (liver) fluke: realistic prospect or quixotic fantasy?

The liver fluke remains an economically significant parasite of livestock and is emerging as an important zoonotic infection of humans. The incidence of the disease has increased in the last few years, as a possible consequence of changes to the World's climate. Future predictions suggest that this trend is likely to continue. Allied to the changing pattern of disease, reports of resistance to triclabendazole (TCBZ) have appeared in the literature, although they do not all represent genuine cases of resistance. Nevertheless, any reports of resistance are a concern, because triclabendazole is t

Modelling spatiotemporal patterns of visceral leishmaniasis incidence in two endemic states in India using environment, bioclimatic and demographic data, 2013-2022.

BACKGROUND: As of 2021, the National Kala-azar Elimination Programme (NKAEP) in India has achieved visceral leishmaniasis (VL) elimination (<1 case / 10,000 population/year per block) in 625 of the 633 endemic blocks (subdistricts) in four states. The programme needs to sustain this achievement and target interventions in the remaining blocks to achieve the WHO 2030 target of VL elimination as a public health problem. An effective tool to analyse programme data and predict/ forecast the spatial and temporal trends of VL incidence, elimination threshold, and risk of resurgence will be of use to

Spatial analysis of G.f.fuscipes abundance in Uganda using Poisson and Zero-Inflated Poisson regression models.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies are the major vectors of human trypanosomiasis of the form Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and T.b.gambiense. They are widely spread across the sub-Saharan Africa and rendering a lot of challenges to both human and animal health. This stresses effective agricultural production and productivity in Africa. Delimiting the extent and magnitude of tsetse coverage has been a challenge over decades due to limited resources and unsatisfactory technology. In a bid to overcome these limitations, this study attempted to explore modelling skills that can be applied to spatially est

Air pollution in Athens basin and health risk assessment.

An inventory of air pollution sources within the Athens basin is carried out for the years 1989, 1992 and 1998 and the results are inputted in a climatological model for predicting ambient concentrations. Despite of the significant growth in the number of road vehicles and the deteriorating traffic, the emissions and ambient concentrations of fine particulates, CO, NOx and VOC appear to remain reasonably constant over for the period 1989 to 1998, while these of SO2 and Pb are reduced, mainly due to the renewal of vehicle fleet, the use of catalytic technologies and the improved quality of the

Wildlife hunting and the increased risk of leprosy transmission in the tropical Americas: a pathogeographical study.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy remains a persistent public health challenge, where human-to-human transmission of Mycobacterium leprae via respiratory droplets is well established. In the tropical Americas, growing evidence implicates armadillos as important zoonotic reservoirs, particularly through direct contact during hunting and handling. However, such transmission has so far been considered rare and highly localised. This study provides a comprehensive spatial analysis of the role of armadillo hunting in human leprosy transmission, quantifying its contribution to disease prevalence and identifying g

Genotype by environment interaction due to heat stress in Brown Swiss cattle.

Due to its geographical position and a highly variable orography, Italy is characterized by several climatic areas and thus, by many different dairy cow farming systems. Brown Swiss cattle, in this context, are a very appreciated genetic resource for their adaptability and low metabolic requirement. The significant heterogeneity in farming systems may consist of genotype by environment (G × E) interactions with neglected changes in animals' rank position. The objective of this study was to investigate G × E for heat tolerance in Brown Swiss cattle for several production traits (milk, fat, and

Which is the best phenotypic trait for use in a targeted selective treatment strategy for growing lambs in temperate climates?

Targeted selective treatment (TST) requires the ability to identify the animals for which anthelmintic treatment will result in the greatest benefit to the entire flock. Various phenotypic traits have previously been suggested as determinant criteria for TST; however, the weight gain benefit and impact on anthelmintic efficacy for each determinant criterion is expected to be dependent upon the level of nematode challenge and the timing of anthelmintic treatment. A mathematical model was used to simulate a population of 10,000 parasitologically naïve Scottish Blackface lambs (with heritable var

Psychedelics and Reward Processing: Before and After the 1970 Controlled Substances Act.

This narrative review traces how the scientific understanding of psychedelics has intersected with "reward processing" from before the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) era to the present, emphasizing how cultural and regulatory climates shaped what was viewed as an acceptable research question. Reward processing is treated as a family of partially overlapping phenomena: (1) reward-linked behavior (e.g., self-administration, conditioned place preference, reinstatement), (2) reward-circuit signals (e.g., mesolimbic dopamine dynamics, electrophysiology, human electroencephalography potentials), an

Taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic structure of Mt. Washington's woody plant communities (New Hampshire, USA).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Environmental gradients structure plant communities at fine to coarse scales. Along elevational gradients, abiotic conditions influence community assembly by filtering species based on their functional strategies, which themselves may be phylogenetically structured. However, it remains challenging to identify which abiotic factors and functional traits are most relevant for gradient-wide assembly, particularly when potential drivers covary. METHODS: We intensively sampled the composition and leaf traits of woody plant communities across a steep elevational gradient on Mt.

Multi-model genome-wide association analysis of agronomic traits in a Kabuli chickpea MAGIC-subset population (Cicer arietinum L.) across Mediterranean environments.

Chickpea is one of the most consumed legumes due to its high nutritional value and accessibility to low-income populations. However, due to climate change, chickpea cultivation is exposed to various environmental stresses affecting its production and productivity. This study evaluates the agronomic performance of 168 MAGIC subset population across two Mediterranean environments, in Marchouch (Morocco) and Terbol (Lebanon). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted to identify potential marker-trait associations (MTAs) using the general linear model (GLM), the mixed linear model (ML

Inhibition by Nitrogen Addition of Moss-Mediated CH4 Uptake and CO2 Emission Under a Well-Drained Temperate Forest, Northeastern China.

Nitrogen (N) deposition poses a multi-pronged threat to the carbon (C)-regulating services of moss understories. For forest C-cycle modeling under increasing N deposition, failure to mechanistically incorporate the moss-mediated processes risks severely overestimating the C sink potential of global forests. To explore whether and how N input affects the moss-mediated CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes, a five-year field measurement was performed in the N manipulation experimental plots treated with 22.5 and 45 kg N ha-1 yr-1 as ammonium chloride for nine years under a well-drained temperate f

Measuring real-time disease transmissibility with temperature-dependent generation intervals.

Accurate real-time estimation of the effective reproduction number (Rt) is critical for infectious disease surveillance and response. In vector-borne diseases like dengue, temperature strongly influences disease transmission by affecting generation times. However, most existing Rt estimation methods assume a fixed generation interval, leading to biased estimates and unreliable assessments of transmission risk in settings with fluctuating temperatures. In this study, we proposed and evaluated a novel framework to estimate a temperature-dependent reproduction number (td-Rt) that dynamically upda

Heat exposure and drug overdose mortality in the USA.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Understanding the relationship between heat and drug overdose mortality is critical given the ongoing overdose crisis and rising global temperatures driven by climate change. Evidence from local jurisdictions in the United States (US) and Canada indicates that exposure to heat is associated with increased drug overdose fatalities, but the widespread impact of heat on national drug overdose deaths is undetermined. We aimed to determine the effect of heat exposure on drug overdose mortality in the US. DESIGN: An observational study using monthly, county-level data from 1999
