BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases are still responsible for the deaths of one million people worldwide every year, particularly in African countries. Plans to combat this worldwide burden, including strategies to control vectors, are still being investigated. Among them, the behavior of chimpanzees, our closest relatives living in African forests, has been studied. In Kibale National Park in Uganda, chimpanzees ingest plants that are biologically active against Plasmodium falciparum responsible for malaria but also select tree species to build their nests. The essential oils extracted from the

Dengue viruses are the causative agents of dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome, which are mainly transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, and cost billions of dollars annually in patient treatment and mosquito control. Progress in understanding DENV pathogenesis and developing effective treatments has been hampered by the lack of a suitable small pathological animal model. Until now, the candidate vaccine, antibody, and drug for DENV have not been effectively evaluated. Here, we analyzed the pathogenicity of DENV-1 in type Ⅰ and type Ⅱ interfe…

Mosquitoes present an immense threat to millions of people worldwide and act as vectors for filariasis disease. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of Allium sativum and Zingiber officinale extracts against filariasis vectors. The larvae were collected from the breeding site by using standard procedures for identification and larvicidal activities. Twenty grams (20 g) from each (Allium sativum and Zingiber officinale) were extracted separately by aqueous, ethanol, and methanol solvents. The phytochemical analysis was determined in the crude sample by using standard methods.

Malaria is a complex disease and its distribution is not random in endemic areas, and hence areas with low malaria transmission require fine spatial sampling and careful follow-up to identify the hot spots for effective resource utilization to control malaria. The present study is aimed to assess malaria infection in both humans and mosquitoes in a small residential lowland area of southern Ethiopia from July to December 2016. A repeated cross-sectional household survey was conducted in Kolla-Shara Kebele (village) to describe the distribution of malaria and infectious mosquitoes. For the para

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) represent a threat for millions of people worldwide, since they act as vectors for important pathogens, including malaria, yellow fever, dengue and West Nile. Second to malaria as the world's most widespread parasitic disease, infection by trematodes is a devastating public health problem. In this study, we proposed two essential oils from plants cultivated in Mediterranean regions as effective chemicals against mosquitoes and freshwater snails vectors of Echinostoma trematodes. Chemical composition of essential oils from Achillea millefolium (Asteraceae) and Ha

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITN) provide excellent protection against malaria; however, they have a number of shortcomings that are particularly evident in politically unstable countries or countries at war: not everyone at risk can necessarily afford a net, nets may be difficult to obtain or import, nets may not be suitable for migrants or refugees sleeping under tents or plastic shelter. There is a need to develop cheaper, locally appropriate alternatives for the most impoverished and for victims of complex emergencies. Afghan women, in common with many Muslim peoples of Asia, wear a

We studied the contribution of non human primates to the transmission of yellow fever and HIV in the wild. We demonstrate the consequences of the modification of ecosystems on the emergence of new viral diseases and the reappearance of diseases believed to be eradicated. In the primary forest, the natural yellow fever cycle is limited to monkeys and mosquitoes living high in the canopy. Transmission to man is an anomaly, requiring the circumstances found in the forest and savanna contact zones, where man has changed the forest to a mosaic and decimated the simian population, favoring contact b

Vector-borne diseases (VBD) caused by arboviruses represent a major public health threat in tropical regions. According to WHO's Global Vector Control Response, more than 80% of the global population live in areas at risk for VBD. For instance, Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV), and its widespread distribution, particularly in Brazil, contributes to the occurrence of outbreaks. During these outbreaks, mosquitoes may acquire either monoinfections or coinfections, which can occur either simultaneously or sequentially, potentially influencing

BACKGROUND: India is committed to malaria elimination by the year 2030. According to the classification of malaria endemicity, the National Capital Territory of Delhi falls under category 1, with an annual parasite incidence of <1, and was targeted for elimination by 2022. Among others, population movement across states is one of the key challenges for malaria control, as it can result in imported malaria, thus introducing local transmission in an area nearing elimination.
OBJECTIVE: This descriptive study attempts to assess the contribution of such imported Plasmodium vivax cases to the mala

BACKGROUND: Anopheles superpictus (subgenus Cellia) plays an efficient role in malaria transmission in countries of the Mediterranean basin, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus region, where it has been involved in the transmission of both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax. In Italy, this species was historically considered a secondary malaria vector, primarily recorded in the South including Sicily, along small rivers. It was less frequently observed in central Italy, only rarely reported in the North. Between 2022 and 2024, as part of routine investigations on residual anophelism, An. superpic

Mosquitoes, one of the deadliest animals on the planet, cause millions of fatalities each year by transmitting several human illnesses. Therefore, it was necessary to use many synthetic pesticides to prevent the spread of diseases, which led to an increase in the effective use of synthetic pesticides to protect humans. The extensive use of pesticides caused serious health problems for humans, environmental damage, and mosquito resistance to synthetic insecticides. This study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal efficacy of Datura stramonium extracts (methanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, and aqueous)

When multiple beneficial alleles at multiple loci are present in a population but not linked together in any one individual, there is no general evolutionary result that determines whether recombination will speed up or slow down the emergence and evolution of genotypes carrying multiple beneficial alleles. Translated to infectious disease control, this evolutionary uncertainty means that when multiple types of drug resistance are present we do not know whether recombination will act more strongly to (1) bring together single-resistant genotypes into multi-drug resistant (MDR) genotypes, or (2

One of the most widespread arboviral diseases in the world, dengue virus disease (DVD) is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, affecting 129 countries. The main way that the dengue virus (DENV) spreads is through the bite of a female Aedes aegypti mosquito. Symptomatic therapy and supportive care are the primary methods of managing patients with DENV infection as there is currently no approved antiviral medication for this condition. Since the guidelines from the AYUSH Ministry, Government of India, recommend 10 ml of carica papaya leaf extract (CPLE) twice daily for seven days

Reducing malaria transmission has been a major pillar of control programmes and is considered crucial for achieving malaria elimination. Gametocytes, the transmissible forms of the P. falciparum parasite, arise during the blood stage of the parasite and develop through 5 morphologically distinct stages. Immature gametocytes (stage I-IV) sequester and develop in the extravascular niche of the bone marrow and possibly spleen. Only mature stage V gametocytes re-enter peripheral circulation to be taken up by mosquitoes for successful onward transmission. We have recently shown that immature, but n

BACKGROUND: Whole sporozoite immunization under chemoprophylaxis (CPS regime) induces long-lasting sterile homologous protection in the controlled human malaria infection model using Plasmodium falciparum strain NF54. The relative proficiency of liver-stage parasite development may be an important factor determining immunization efficacy. Previous studies show that Plasmodium falciparum strain NF135 produces relatively high numbers of large liver-stage schizonts in vitro. Here, we evaluate this strain for use in CPS immunization regimes.

The occurrence and spread of insecticide resistance has had a negative effect on the efficacy of insecticide-based tools and is distributed worldwide, including the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). This study aims to determine the insecticide susceptibility of malaria and dengue vectors in malaria and dengue hotspots on the Thai-Myanmar border. Mosquito larvae and pupae were obtained from water sources from December 2019 to April 2020 in Tha Song Yang District, Tak province, western Thailand. WHO bioassay susceptibility tests were conducted with three classes of insecticides to evaluate the kno

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. ZIKV can be transmitted to humans by non-vector borne mechanisms such as sexual intercourse, maternal-foetal transmission or blood transfusion. In 2015, ZIKV emerged in the Americas, and spread to 87 countries and territories with autochthonous transmission, distributed across four of the six WHO regions. Most ZIKV infections in pregnancy are asymptomatic, but mother to child transmission of the virus can occur in 20 to 30% of cases and cause severe foetal and child defects. Children exposed to

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic low-density gametocyte carriers represent the majority of malaria-infected individuals. However, the impact of recommended treatment with single low dose of primaquine and an artemisinin-based combination therapy to reduce transmission in this group is unknown.
METHODS: This was a four-arm, open label, randomized controlled trial comparing the effect of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHAP) alone or combined with single dose of primaquine (PQ) at 0.20mg/kg, 0.40mg/kg, or 0.75mg/kg on Plasmodium falciparum gametocytaemia, infectiousness to mosquitoes and hemoglobin cha

BACKGROUND: Malaria control in Africa relies heavily on indoor vector management, primarily indoor residual spraying and insecticide treated bed nets. Little is known about outdoor biting behaviour or even the dynamics of indoor biting and infection risk of sleeping household occupants. In this paper we explore the preferred biting sites on the human body and some of the ramifications regarding infection risk and exposure management.
METHODS: We undertook whole-night human landing catches of Anopheles arabiensis in South Africa and Anopheles gambiae s.s. and Anopheles funestus in Uganda, for

West Nile virus (WNV) entered North America in 1999 and in 2002 was shown to be transfusion transmitted. With competent mosquito and bird vectors throughout the United States and Canada, WNV clinical disease continues at epidemic proportions. Due to these facts, blood donor screening was implemented prior to the 2003 mosquito season and occurs using a variety of strategies. A combination of minipool (MP) nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) during the " non-season, " coupled with the conversion to the more sensitive individual donation (ID) NAT in epidemic locations during epidemic times,
