Ambient air temperature exposure and foetal size and growth in three European birth cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: Ambient air temperature may affect birth outcomes adversely, but little is known about their impact on foetal growth throughout pregnancy. We evaluated the association between temperature exposure during pregnancy and foetal size and growth in three European birth cohorts. METHODS: We studied 23,408 pregnant women from the English Born in Bradford cohort, Dutch Generation R Study, and Spanish INMA Project. Using the UrbClimTM model, weekly ambient air temperature exposure at 100x100m resolution at the mothers' residences during pregnancy was calculated. Estimated foetal weight,

High prevalence and spatial distribution of Strongyloides stercoralis in rural Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: The threadworm, Strongyloides stercoralis, endemic in tropical and temperate climates, is a neglected tropical disease. Its diagnosis requires specific methods, and accurate information on its geographic distribution and global burden are lacking. We predicted prevalence, using Bayesian geostatistical modeling, and determined risk factors in northern Cambodia. METHODS: From February to June 2010, we performed a cross-sectional study among 2,396 participants from 60 villages in Preah Vihear Province, northern Cambodia. Two stool specimens per participant were examined using Koga ag

The dominant Anopheles vectors of human malaria in the Asia-Pacific region: occurrence data, distribution maps and bionomic précis.

BACKGROUND: The final article in a series of three publications examining the global distribution of 41 dominant vector species (DVS) of malaria is presented here. The first publication examined the DVS from the Americas, with the second covering those species present in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Here we discuss the 19 DVS of the Asian-Pacific region. This region experiences a high diversity of vector species, many occurring sympatrically, which, combined with the occurrence of a high number of species complexes and suspected species complexes, and behavioural plasticity of many of t

Geographical distribution patterns and habitat suitability models for presence of host-seeking ixodid ticks in dense woodlands of Mendocino County, California.

We used drag sampling to examine the geographical distribution patterns of ixodid ticks engaging in open (non-nidicolous) host-seeking behavior in dense woodland habitats of the climatically and ecologically diverse Mendocino County in north coastal California. The findings based on this sampling methodology reflect risk of human exposure to host-seeking ticks rather than the true distribution of the ticks. Drag sampling in 78 sites yielded 7,860 nymphal or adult Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls, 220 Dermacentor occidentalis Marx, 150 Ixodes spinipalpis Hadwen & Nuttall, 15 Hemaphysalis leporis

Factors related to cattle infestation level and resistance to acaricides in Boophilus microplus tick populations in New Caledonia.

Boophilus microplus, even in the absence of babesiosis, is a major disease of the cattle in New Caledonia where the particular farming system associates continental European breeds and a tropical climate tempered by the Pacific Ocean. In order to have a better understanding of the factors involved in cattle tick infestation, to decrease the possible wastage and use of chemicals and to increase the lifetime of the acaricides, the veterinary authorities investigated the conditions of the chemical treatments. A survey among 148 cattle farms of the whole of New Caledonia was carried out and factor

Urban-rural disparity in global estimation of PM2·5 household air pollution and its attributable health burden.

BACKGROUND: Polluting fuels and inefficient stove technologies are still a leading cause of premature deaths worldwide, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Previous studies of global household air pollution (HAP) have neither considered the estimation of PM2·5 at national level nor the corresponding attributable mortality burden. Additionally, the effects of climate and ambient air pollution on the global estimation of HAP-PM2·5 exposure for different urban and rural settings remain largely unknown. In this study, we include climatic effects to estimate the HAP-PM2·5 exposu

Complex maternal genetic landscape in the Koṅkaṇī population of India.

The Koṅkaṇ region on the west coast of India is a hotspot of culture, folklore and ethnolinguistic diversity, yet its maternal genetic landscape remains largely unresolved. The present study captures the genetic affinities of the Koṅkaṇī population, residing along the Koṅkaṇ Malabar coast by analysing complete mitochondrial genomes (n = 85) and control region hypervariable sequences (n = 210). Our results reveal divergent maternal histories between the Sārasvata and the non-Sārasvata groups. Comparative analysis against over 5000 mitochondrial genomes from Eurasia demonstrates that the Koṅkaṇī

The chytrid fungus threatens the last epidemiologically naive Neotropical montane amphibian biodiversity hotspot.

The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (B. dendrobatidis) has caused catastrophic biodiversity loss worldwide.1,2,3 Although B. dendrobatidis is now widespread across environmentally suitable regions,4 the absence of amphibian declines in some high-suitability areas suggests the existence of refuges supporting epidemiologically naive communities. Epidemiologically naive refuges have not experienced past B. dendrobatidis epizootics despite suitable environmental conditions and may be B. dendrobatidis-free, harbor less virulent B. dendrobatidis lineages, or contain resistant

Influence of ecological and management factors on Toxoplasma gondii infection in small ruminants in Algeria.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan of major concern for small-ruminant production and public health. This study is among the first to simultaneously compare T. gondii seroprevalence across contrasting Algerian bioclimatic zones. In summer 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted across 82 herds comprising 4,022 small ruminants in three provinces of central Algeria (Blida, Médéa, Djelfa), representing contrasting bioclimatic zones (humid, semi-arid, and arid). Blood samples were collected from 1,052 animals older than six months to assess the apparent seroprevalence of T. gondii and a

Environmental, socioeconomic, and livestock-related factors associated with antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., and Salmonella enterica: A global One Health analysis.

Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is a major global health threat. Beyond inappropriate clinical use, its emergence and persistence are influenced by complex interactions across humans, animals and the environment, demanding a One Health perspective. To investigate these dynamics, we conducted an ecological study on 397,103 isolates of Escherichia coli and Shigella spp. and Salmonella enterica collected from human, animal, and environmental sources in 102 countries between 2003 and 2018, using the NCBI Pathogen Detection database. Genotypically-inferred resistance to seven major antibiotic classes (

Decoupled transport pathways and source materials of black carbon in the Pearl River Estuary and the North Yellow Sea.

Black carbon (BC) buried in marginal sea sediments represents a significant global carbon sink, yet the relative contributions of different transport pathways and source materials under varying climatic and emission regimes remain poorly constrained. In this study, we analyzed BC content, BC/TOC ratio, stable carbon isotopes (δ13CBC), and sediment grain size in surface sediments from two contrasting Chinese marginal seas: the subtropical Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and the temperate North Yellow Sea (NYS). Using a Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR), we apportioned BC sources along two dimensions: g

Alternative splicing acts as a strategic switch for heat shock network diversification under escalating heat stress.

Alternative splicing (AS) is a pivotal post-transcriptional mechanism for plant thermal adaptation, yet its dynamics in heat-tolerant woody species remain poorly understood. Here, we map the temperature-resolved AS landscape of the highly thermotolerant woody plant Rhododendron hainanense by combining Iso-Seq with RNA-seq. Transcriptomic profiling revealed a graded regulatory architecture: moderate heat (37 °C) elicited a targeted proteostatic response, whereas severe heat (42 °C) provoked a massive transcriptome expansion. Notably, this global AS surge coincided with a widespread downregulati

Environmental impact ramifications of replacing added sugar with non-nutritive sweeteners in a high-calorie Dutch diet: the SWEET project.

PURPOSE: Growing concern about excess added sugar intake and associated adverse health effects has increased interest in non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) as low-calorie alternatives that preserve sweetness. Previous studies focus on health effects of replacing added sugar, or environmental impacts of NNS alone. However, none evaluate the environmental impact ramifications of replacing added sugar with NNS in a whole dietary setting. This study addresses that gap. METHODS: The baseline diet reflected an average diet of Dutch adults consuming > 2200 kcal/day (mean 2866 kcal/day). Added sugar (54

Distinct demographic histories associated with elevational ranges of two giant flying squirrel species in Taiwan.

Geographic and environmental isolation affect genetic differentiation. While their relative importance has been investigated in many species, it is unclear whether closely related species on the same island would show similar patterns of within-species population structure. In this study, we use demographic and environmental modeling to explore factors affecting genetic diversification by contrasting a closely related pair of species, the giant flying squirrels Petaurista lena and Petaurista grandis in Taiwan, with similar life histories but different elevational ranges. Both species exhibit n

Environmental continuum of Candidozyma auris: From sapronotic ecology to outbreak prediction and control with a One Health perspective.

Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) has emerged within just over a decade as one of the most relevant multidrug-resistant fungal pathogens affecting human health worldwide. Its pathogenicity, capacity for skin colonization, environmental persistence, and resistance to antifungal drugs and disinfectants have all contributed to its consolidation as a leading cause of healthcare-associated outbreaks. Nevertheless, increasing evidence indicates that C. auris should not be viewed solely as a nosocomial yeast, but rather as part of a broader environmental continuum encompassing natural habita

Why Nurses Intend to Override AI Alerts: How Alert Fatigue, Moral Distress, and Team Psychological Safety Shape Self-Reported Trust Calibration Toward Clinical Decision Support.

Background and Objectives: Hospitals increasingly use AI tools that give nurses on-screen alerts and recommendations (AI-supported clinical decision support, AI-DSS). When nurses override these alerts too often, useful guidance can be lost; when they trust them blindly, errors can slip through. We examined which work and wellbeing factors are associated with nurses' self-reported intention to override AI alerts, rather than observed override behavior. Methods: We surveyed 239 registered nurses (76.6% female; mean age 33.7 years) at a large hospital in Timișoara, Romania, from January to March

Algal Toxins, Food Safety, and Bioterrorism: A Food and Water Defense Perspective.

Food defense encompasses both the prevention of accidental contamination and the protection of food and water systems against deliberate adulteration. Within this framework, algal toxins deserve greater attention because they occupy a critical intersection of water security, seafood and drinking-water safety, environmental change, supply-chain continuity, and public health preparedness. The novelty of this review lies in reframing algal toxins from a primarily environmental, seafood safety, or clinical toxicology topic into an integrated food and water defense problem. This perspective brings

"A small change can make a huge difference": teachers' perceived roles, barriers, and strategies in tackling loneliness in schools.

Teachers, as key attachment adults in the school environment where children and adolescents spend substantial time, play a crucial supportive role in pupil's experiences of loneliness. This study captures teachers' perspectives on pupil loneliness through qualitative interviews with 16 primary and secondary school teachers (8 from England and 8 from China), covering pupils ages 6-18 years. Thematic analysis of those interviews uncovered four themes: Teachers as Key Attachment Figures in School Life, Teachers' Relational Work in Addressing the Social Dimensions of Loneliness, Professional and I

Meeting the challenges to adolescent well-being: context, returns on investment, and financing.

Adolescents in many countries face serious challenges in realizing the level of well-being that is their human right. Many factors-deep-seated inequality within and between countries, rapid change in skill requirements for employment, climate change, and social media-are driving these deepening challenges. This paper develops three points about the need for an urgent response to this situation. First, there is now evidence that a powerful suite of cost-effective investments is available to improve adolescent well-being. To support this claim, we draw on recent modelling of investments for many
