At the Chirurgische Universitätsklinik Köln-Lindenthal, 103 children were treated for supracondylar fracture of the humerus from 1955 to 1975. The method of choice for treatment was Baumann's vertical suspension. Lesions of the brachial nerve were found to be the primary complication in 7% of the children and circulatory disorders in 10%. While the nerve injuries were treated conservatively, except for one case, 9 children had to be operated on because of ischemia of the forearm. The circulatory disorders could be rectified by thrombectomy and reconstruction of the brachial artery. In one chil

AIM: The distal intraarticular fracture of the humerus, even in elderly patients, was treated so far with internal osteosynthesis. Due to the poor bone stock, in association with a complex fracture site, the achieved results may be disappointing. The use of an elbow joint prosthesis may be a solution for these specific problems in elderly patients as long as one takes the features of the prosthesis into account.
METHOD: Eleven patients with a mean age of 77 years were followed up for 12 months after implantation of an elbow joint replacement. In the other group we examined 15 patients (averag

General principles in the rehabilitation of a patient with an extremity fracture include: treat the patient, not the x-ray; move all joints not immobilized; prevent disuse atrophy; use gravity to assist in mobilizing a joint; stabilize proximal joints to avoid reverse action of biarticular muscles; permit early protected weight bearing until adequate joint mobility is achieved; appropriately instruct the patient in a home program, and avoid all stretching.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine the effect of shoulder dystocia on umbilical artery acidosis.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective analysis of 134 mother-infant pairs of shoulder dystocia cases at our institution from January 1, 1994, through December 31, 1997. Cases were identified from the obstetric database, and charts were abstracted for demographics, head-to-body delivery interval, umbilical blood gas parameters, and neonatal outcome. Pooled student t tests were used to compare mean blood gas values with data previously reported from our patient population. Regression analysis

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) frequently lack of clinical data on efficacy to substantiate a future clinical use. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy to heal long bone delayed unions and non-unions, as secondary objective of the EudraCT 2011-005441-13 clinical trial, through clinical and radiological bone consolidation at 3, 6 and 12 months of follow-up, with subgroup analysis of affected bone, gender, tobacco use, and time since the original fracture.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients were recruited and surgically treated with autologous

BACKGROUND: The current operative standard of care for disseminated malignant bone disease suggests stabilizing the entire bone to avoid the need for subsequent operative intervention but risks of doing so include complications related to embolic phenomena.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We questioned whether progression and reoperation occur with enough frequency to justify additional risks of longer intramedullary devices.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was done for 96 patients with metastases, myeloma, or lymphoma who had undergone stabilization or arthroplasty of impending or actual femoral

BACKGROUND: This technique utilizes a full-thickness flap to provide a posterior approach to the scapula for open reduction and internal fracture fixation. The present video article outlines the Judet approach along with an incision modification tip for the surgeon's consideration.
DESCRIPTION: Prior to making the incision, perform preoperative planning, patient and C-arm positioning, and identification of the primary fragments of the fracture that necessitate fixation on imaging. The Judet incision is made, and the full-thickness flap is retracted laterally (also described as a "boomerang-sh

PURPOSE: Limited evidence exists for functional outcomes of neck-shaft-angle (NSA) in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) for proximal humerus fractures (PHFs). We evaluated the functional outcomes of 155° versus 145° NSA RSA, to determine superiority for acute PHFs. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 66-patients with displaced 3/4-part, head-split or fracture-dislocation PHFs, managed with acute RSA, within 4-weeks of injury at single trauma unit. 33-patients underwent 155° NSA RSA cemented stem; 33-patients 145° NSA RSA uncemented stem. All had same glenoid components with equivocal humeral s

BACKGROUND: Uncemented reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) for the primary treatment of proximal humerus fractures (PHF) in elderly patients was introduced at our institution in 2017. Recent reports have raised concerns about increased rates of early bone resorption at the proximal humerus with uncemented fracture stems. The aim of this study was to find out whether there was any difference in functional or radiographic outcomes between cemented and uncemented RTSA for PHF.
METHODS: Seventeen consecutive patients who underwent uncemented RTSA (group nC) in 2017 and 2018 were age and se

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral arthrodesis is associated with a high rate of complications. Although patients experience reasonable pain relief and shoulder stability, they experience marked limitations in their upper-extremity function. The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical outcomes of glenohumeral arthrodesis.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with 29 affected shoulders underwent primary glenohumeral arthrodesis between 1992 and 2009. Surgical indications included rotator cuff arthropathy and pseudoparalysis (n = 7), neurologic injuries (n = 12), chronic infection (n = 3), recurrent d

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a relatively uncommon cause of glenohumeral arthritis. Previous retrospective reviews of shoulder arthroplasty for AVN have shown very good results in small numbers of patients. This study prospectively evaluated a consecutive series of 21 shoulders in 19 patients treated with the same modular prosthesis at a single institution. Of the shoulders, 8 developed AVN after a proximal humeral fracture, 1 was associated with a massive rotator cuff tear, 10 developed after corticosteroid therapy, and 2 were idiopathic. The patients, 14 women and 5 men, with a mean age of 54

BACKGROUND: The higher failure rates reported with arthroscopic stabilization of traumatic, recurrent anterior shoulder instability compared with open stabilization remain a concern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of arthroscopic Bankart repairs with the use of suture anchors and to identify risk factors related to postoperative recurrence of shoulder instability.
METHODS: Ninety-one consecutive patients underwent arthroscopic stabilization for recurrent anterior traumatic shoulder instability. The mean age (and standard deviation) at the time of surgery was 26.4 +/- 5
