Deep learning synthesis of DBT features from mammography for breast cancer diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) enhances diagnostic accuracy by minimizing tissue overlap seen in digital mammography (DM). However, the substantial number of images generated by DBT poses challenges for radiologists. The aim of this study was to enhance the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of DM for breast cancer diagnosis by leveraging advanced feature representations derived from DBT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board of the institute, and samples were consecutively collected from February 2019 to August 202

Deep transfer learning for detection of breast arterial calcifications on mammograms: a comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Breast arterial calcifications (BAC) are common incidental findings on routine mammograms, which have been suggested as a sex-specific biomarker of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Previous work showed the efficacy of a pretrained convolutional network (CNN), VCG16, for automatic BAC detection. In this study, we further tested the method by a comparative analysis with other ten CNNs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four-view standard mammography exams from 1,493 women were included in this retrospective study and labeled as BAC or non-BAC by experts. The comparative study was conducted

Validation of AI-driven measurements for hip morphology assessment.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Accurate assessment of hip morphology is crucial for the diagnosis and management of hip pathologies. Traditional manual measurements are prone to mistakes and inter- and intra-reader variability. Artificial intelligence (AI) could mitigate such issues by providing accurate and reproducible measurements. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of BoneMetrics (Gleamer, Paris, France) in measuring pelvic and hip parameters on anteroposterior (AP) and false profile radiographs to expert manual measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study in

Multi-magnification-based machine learning as an ancillary tool for the pathologic assessment of shaved margins for breast carcinoma lumpectomy specimens.

The surgical margin status of breast lumpectomy specimens for invasive carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) guides clinical decisions, as positive margins are associated with higher rates of local recurrence. The "cavity shave" method of margin assessment has the benefits of allowing the surgeon to orient shaved margins intraoperatively and the pathologist to assess one inked margin per specimen. We studied whether a deep convolutional neural network, a deep multi-magnification network (DMMN), could accurately segment carcinoma from benign tissue in whole slide images (WSIs) of shave

Evaluating the Accuracy of Using at Rest Images to Determine the Height of Velopharyngeal Closure.

Prior to performing secondary surgeries, lateral cephalograms have been used during phonation to evaluate the point of attempted velopharyngeal contact along the posterior pharyngeal wall relative to the palatal plane and the first cervical vertebra. The ability to quantify the height of velopharyngeal closure is an important aspect of planning corrective surgeries for velopharyngeal dysfunction. However, issues with patient compliance during the imaging process can present difficulties for obtaining adequate preoperative imaging data. The purpose of this study was to assess if the height of v

False-positive reduction in computer-aided mass detection using mammographic texture analysis and classification.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of computer-aided-detection (CAD) systems for mammograms is to assist radiologists by marking region of interest (ROIs) depicting abnormalities. However, the confusing appearance of some normal tissues that visually look like masses results in a large proportion of marked ROIs with normal tissues. This paper copes with this problem and proposes a framework to reduce false positive masses detected by CAD. METHODS: To avoid the error induced by the segmentation step, we proposed a segmentation-free framework with particular attention to improve feature extracti

Unsupervised segmentation of lung fields in chest radiographs using multiresolution fractal feature vector and deformable models.

Segmenting lung fields in a chest radiograph is essential for automatically analyzing an image. We present an unsupervised method based on multiresolution fractal feature vector. The feature vector characterizes the lung field region effectively. A fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm is then applied to obtain a satisfactory initial contour. The final contour is obtained by deformable models. The results show the feasibility and high performance of the proposed method. Furthermore, based on the segmentation of lung fields, the cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) can be measured. The CTR is a simple index
