Chronic dietary deficiency of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) with excessive intake of aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of high incidence amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the Western Pacific. A new method for the determination of the activity of alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex (KGDHC) in mouse brain and liver mitochondria and in human platelets using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is described.
