Post-process optimization of 3D printed poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) dental implant scaffold for enhanced structure and mechanical properties: effects of sonication duration and power.

We described a technique of a post-process stage to partially remove the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) binder in Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) dental scaffolds. The scaffolds were exposed to ultrasonic waves while immersed in an ethanol/acetone solvent mixture that possessed both polar and nonpolar properties. A factorial experiment was conducted in which the scaffolds were treated to three levels of sonication power (pW): 0, 20% (22 W) and 40% (44 W), and soaking duration (t): 5, 15, and 30 min. The treated scaffolds were characterized by FT-IR, optical microscopy, and mechanical (compress

Neural cell integration into 3D bioprinted skeletal muscle constructs accelerates restoration of muscle function.

A bioengineered skeletal muscle construct that mimics structural and functional characteristics of native skeletal muscle is a promising therapeutic option to treat extensive muscle defect injuries. We previously showed that bioprinted human skeletal muscle constructs were able to form multi-layered bundles with aligned myofibers. In this study, we investigate the effects of neural cell integration into the bioprinted skeletal muscle construct to accelerate functional muscle regeneration in vivo. Neural input into this bioprinted skeletal muscle construct shows the improvement of myofiber form

Structural characterization of chitosan/nanoclay nanocomposites as emergent engineered nanohybrid biomaterials.

Chitosan-nanoclay nanocomposites (CNNCs) are attractive aqueous platforms for biorelevant manufacturing, yet the impact of clay morphology under identical preparation and testing conditions remains insufficiently resolved. In the present work, low-molecular-weight chitosan (CS) was combined with three nanoclays, bentonite (BEN, layered), halloysite (HAL, tubular) and sepiolite (SEP, fibrous), to prepare hybrid suspensions at pH 4.5 spanning defined CS/nanoclay ratios. BEN and SEP series were formulated from 15/85 to 75/25 (CS/nanoclay, w/w); HAL series ranged from 5/95 to 55/45. After 48 h agi

3D printing technology-assisted total hip arthroplasty for acute proximal femoral fracture and Hartofilakidis type II developmental dysplasia of the hip: a case report and literature review.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) associated with an acute proximal femoral fracture on the same side is uncommon, and performing a one-stage total hip arthroplasty (THA) with concurrent fracture stabilization in such cases poses significant technical challenges. We present a case involving a 57-year-old female with a long history of right-sided DDH who was involved in a vehicular accident, leading to acute pain in her right hip, shortening of the limb, and restricted movement. Imaging studies indicated Hartofilakidis type II DDH along with a comminuted intertrochanteric fracture of the

Black Bone MRI for Virtual Surgical Planning in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery.

Advances in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software have improved translational applications of virtual surgical planning (VSP) in craniomaxillofacial surgery, allowing for precise and accurate fabrication of cutting guides, stereolithographic models, and custom implants. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) imaging has traditionally been the gold standard imaging modality for VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery but delivers ionizing radiation. Black bone magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reduces the risks related to radiation exposure and has comparable functionality

The Use of Silicone Vaginal Repair Models as an Adjunct to Mannequins for Simulation Training in Sexual Assault Clinical Learning for Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Residents.

Within urgent care scenarios in obstetrics and gynecology, there is little educational development surrounding sexual assault simulation scenarios, which reveals a need for increased rehearsal opportunities within medical education. Simulation-based medical education using mannequins, standardized patients, and anatomical silicone models have been suggested as a means to improve such parameters by providing realistic training for residents in the rehearsal of sexual assault scenarios and the application of forensic evidence kits. However, sexual assault training is often only provided to emerg

Combining microfluidics and coaxial 3D-bioprinting for the manufacturing of diabetic wound healing dressings.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a crucial complication of diabetes, as in a diabetic wound, each step of the physiological healing process is affected. This entails a more easily infectable wound, and delayed tissue regeneration due to the inflammation that occurs, leading to a drastic decrease in the overall patient's quality of life. As a strategy to manage DFUs, skin alternatives and wound dressings are currently receiving a lot of attention as they keep the wound environment "under control", while providing bioactive compounds that help to manage infection and inflammation and promote tiss

Improved Pain and Function After TTC Fusion With a Custom Cage.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional custom cages can be used to treat complex ankle and hindfoot pathology and bone loss with potentially better patient satisfaction and higher fusion rates than tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion alone or in combination with bulk femoral head allograft. Yet there is limited literature to support this procedure. The purpose of this study is to objectively quantify the clinical and radiologic outcomes of patients undergoing patient-specific 3D-printed custom cage implantation to fill large defects around the ankle joint region as part of a limb-salvaging TTC fusion. PEEK patient-specific implants for orbital reconstruction: accuracy and clinical outcomes.

Orbital fractures represent a common and complex challenge in maxillofacial surgery, with functional and aesthetic sequelae. Advances in computer-aided design and manufacturing, virtual planning, and three-dimensional printing have enabledpatient-specific implants (PSIs). Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a bioinert polymer with properties similar to cortical bone, has emerged as a suitable material for orbital reconstruction. Surgical navigation has also been advocated to enhance accuracy in challenging regions. This retrospective service evaluation analysed ten patients with unilateral orbital fr

Operative simulation of anterior clinoidectomy using a rapid prototyping model molded by a three-dimensional printer.

BACKGROUND: As the anatomical three-dimensional (3D) positional relationship around the anterior clinoid process (ACP) is complex, experience of many surgeries is necessary to understand anterior clinoidectomy (AC). We prepared a 3D synthetic image from computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and a rapid prototyping (RP) model from the imaging data using a 3D printer. The objective of this study was to evaluate anatomical reproduction of the 3D synthetic image and intraosseous region after AC in the RP model. In addition, the usefulness of the RP model

Engineering high-fidelity bone organoids: Operational classification, multilineage crosstalk, biofabrication evidence, and translational validation.

Bone organoids are emerging as three-dimensional models of skeletal development, disease and regeneration. The term bone organoid is applied inconsistently to osteogenic spheroids, scaffold-dominated constructs and self-organizing skeletal tissues. This review establishes an operational five-class framework that distinguishes osteogenic spheroids, bone-like microtissues, engineered skeletal constructs, bone organoids and high-fidelity bone organoids. Core organoid criteria are separated from advanced, application-dependent features, and a structured evidence map applies the terminology to repr

Complementary visual localization and tactile mapping approach for robotic perception of millimeter-sized objects with irregular surfaces.

Humanoid robots and human-machine interaction technologies are essential for perceiving and manipulating millimeter-scale objects with irregular surfaces in extreme environments, such as outer space, radioactive zones, and hazardous sites with explosive ordnance, where human access is restricted. A vision-based perception approach provides spatial and positional information about objects but relying solely on it for robot manipulation poses challenges due to limitations in detectable object size, as well as sensitivity to external factors such as focusing issues, occlusion, and lighting condit

Engineered Magneto-Piezoelectric Nanoparticles-Enhanced Scaffolds Disrupt Biofilms and Activate Oxidative Phosphorylation in Icam1+ Macrophages for Infectious Bone Defect Regeneration.

Infectious bone defects pose significant clinical challenges due to persistent infection and impaired bone healing. Icam1+ macrophages were identified as crucial and previously unrecognized regulators in the repair of bone defects, where impaired oxidative phosphorylation within this macrophage subset represents a significant barrier to effective bone regeneration. To address this challenge, dual-responsive iron-doped barium titanate (BFTO) nanoparticles were synthesized with magnetic and ultrasonic properties. These nanoparticles were further loaded with the anti-inflammatory agent curcumin a

Latest advance anti-inflammatory hydrogel wound dressings and traditional Lignosus rhinoceros used for wound healing agents.

Wound healing is a physiological process occurring after the onset of a skin lesion aiming to reconstruct the dermal barrier between the external environment and the body. Depending on the nature and duration of the healing process, wounds are classified as acute (e.g., trauma, surgical wounds) and chronic (e.g., diabetic ulcers) wounds. The latter, often affect millions of people globally, take months to heal or not heal non-healing chronic wounds, are typically susceptible to microbial infection, and are a major cause of morbidity. Wounds can be treated with a variety of non-surgical (topica
