A Syndrome of Apparent Renal Failure.

Pseudo-azotemia is the syndrome of hypercreatininemia and hyperkaliemia without a change in glomerular filtration rate or structure of the kidney. A 57-year-old vulnerable woman with learning difficulties experienced an intraperitoneal bladder rupture in the absence of a pelvic fracture after a fall. It is suspected that the blunt force compression of a distended bladder situated above the bony protection of the pelvis resulted in delayed intraperitoneal bladder rupture. Urinary ascites resulted in pseudo-azotemia because of urinary creatinine reabsorption across the peritoneum. This "apparent

Management of Iatrogenic Bladder Injury due to Vascular Surgery: Case Report and Literature Review.

We report an unusual case of a 53-year-old male patient, previously undergone an extra-anatomic right-to-left iliofemoral bypass graft, who has developed gross hematuria after 4 months. The cystoscopic examination revealed a wall injury due to the presence of the graft crossing the bladder. Iatrogenic bladder injuries during vascular surgery are extremely rare. In the literature, only 11 cases of transvesical graft are reported. The complication has been resolved with the removal of the misplaced graft and the reconstruction of the bypass with silver-coated Dacron prosthesis. Despite the rarit

Short term complications from transurethral resection of bladder tumor.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis and subsequent management of bladder cancer often involves transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). Risks of TURBT include perioperative complications such as bleeding, pain and perforation. We aimed to determine TURBT complication rates and risk factors in a contemporary series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2002 to 2011, 505 patients underwent TURBT either for suspected bladder cancer or during follow up at a single institution. Baseline patient characteristics and complications within 2 weeks of surgery were extracted from the electronic medical record fo

A randomized, controlled clinical trial of an intravesical pressure-attenuation balloon system for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in females.

AIMS: Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a novel pressure-attenuation balloon for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) using a prospective, randomized, single-blind, multi-center design, evaluated at 3 months. METHODS: Sixty-three females with SUI were randomized 2:1 to treatment with a balloon (N = 41) or sham procedure (N = 22). The sham (control) entailed the same procedure without the deployment of a balloon. Endpoints were evaluated at 3 months and included a composite endpoint that required both ≥10 point increase in the 22-item Incontinence Quality

Complication of treatment of carcinoma in situ of the bladder with photodynamic targeted cystodiathermy.

We report two cases of bladder contracture following photodynamic or 'blue light' detection and cystodiathermy for bladder carcinoma in situ. These patients were unsuitable for treatment with immunotherapy/chemotherapy or had disease recurrence following such treatment. Radical cystectomy was not a treatment option in either patient. Each underwent serial photodynamic cystodiathermy over a three-year period. Neither patient developed muscle invasive disease. However, treatment resulted in contracture of the bladder and incontinence of urine. Patients need to be fully aware of this potential co

The use of local anesthesia with N-DO injector (Physion) for transurethral resection (TUR) of bladder tumors and bladder mapping: preliminary results and cost-effectiveness analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated feasibility of TUR of Ta-T1 TCC of the bladder or bladder mapping under local anesthesia using a Physion endoinjector to see if correct tumor staging was possible, to check patient tolerability, and to analyze cost-effectiveness. METHODS: Thirty patients with bladder tumors and 10 patients with hematuria and/or doubtful cytologies were treated in a day hospital setting. TUR or biopsies were performed after injecting lidocaine into the outer area of the lesion in the bladder at 2-3 sites under the mucosa. A single injection per biopsy site was necessary for bladder mapp

Uroplakin III-delta4 messenger RNA as a promising marker to identify nonulcerative interstitial cystitis.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis remains a poorly understood urological condition characterized by chronic pelvic pain and increased urinary frequency in the absence of any known etiology. Urothelial dysfunction and other abnormalities are presumed to be involved in the disease. Uroplakins that are expressed by urothelial cells are thought to have an important role as major barrier proteins on the apical surface of the urothelium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gene expression of uroplakin Ia, Ib, II, III and III-delta4 was quantitatively measured in bladder biopsy samples from 29 patients with interst
