Associations between schistosomiasis and HIV-1 acquisition risk in four prospective cohorts: a nested case-control analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, schistosomes infect approximately 200 million people, with 90% of infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Schistosomiasis is hypothesized to increase HIV-1 acquisition risk, and multiple cross-sectional studies reported strong associations. We evaluated this hypothesis within four large prospective cohorts. METHODS: We conducted nested case-control analyses within three longitudinal cohorts of heterosexual HIV-1 serodiscordant couples and one female sex worker (FSW) cohort from Kenya and Uganda. The serodiscordant couples studies were conducted between 2004 and 2012 while th

HIV risk profiles differed by gender and experience of men who had sex with men among attendees of anonymous voluntary counseling and testing in Taiwan.

Free voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) has been available in Taiwan as a part of HIV surveillance and prevention program since 1999, but related data were seldom reported. We aimed to examine characteristics of individuals who attended anonymous client-initiated VCT service and factors associated with HIV infection. The study population consisted of clients at two large VCT sites located in northern and southern Taiwan in 2004- 2008. Information on socio-demographic factors and potential risk behaviors was obtained by a questionnaire. Of 5671 clients, 65.1% were younger than 30 years; 42.

Prognostic factors of survival of HIV-infected patients with cytomegalovirus disease: Aquitaine Cohort, 1986-1997. Groupe d'Epidémiologie Clinique du SIDA en Aquitaine (GECSA).

OBJECTIVE: To analyse survival of HIV-infected patients who developed cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease and to identify prognostic factors of their survival. METHODS: Cases of CMV disease diagnosed in the Aquitaine Cohort of HIV-infected patients (n = 4297) during the 1986-1996 period, were reviewed using standardised definitions. Follow-up was extended to December 1997. Cox model was used to determine factors associated with survival after the initial manifestations of CMV disease, considering protease inhibitor (PI) prescription and anti-CMV treatment as time dependent covariates. RESULTS: 253

Is degree attainment associated with serious psychological distress among Black men aged 24 and older?

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the relationship between degree attainment and serious psychological distress (SPD) among Black men in the United States. Using the Social Determinants of Mental Health (SDoMH) framework, we investigated whether degree attainment serves as a protective factor against SPD and explored how individual factors (age, sexual orientation, state of health), socioeconomic factors (income and marital status), and substance use factors (marijuana use and alcohol use) modify this relationship. DESIGN: We analyzed data from the 2022 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (n

Exploring Help-Seeking Behaviors among Black Sexual Minority Cisgender Women in Late Adolescence: The Role of Abuse Experiences.

Sexual minority youth (e.g., lesbian, queer, bisexual) encounter higher rates of abuse compared to their heterosexual peers. Similarly, Black youth are disproportionately affected by adverse experiences, including abuse. Seeking help after experiencing abuse has been shown to improve both mental and physical health outcomes. There is a lack of research on how the intersection of these identities affects help-seeking behaviors when experiencing different types of abuse. To address this gap, our study analyzed national data from 716 Black cisgender sexual minority women (SMW) aged 18 to 21 (Mage

Validation of the Brief Assessment of Stress and Eating (BASE) in cisgender gay men and lesbian women.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority adults are at elevated risk for eating disorders (EDs), yet existing screening tools have rarely been validated in this population. Most ED screening instruments have been validated in predominately cisgender, heterosexual female samples limiting their generalizability to populations with different symptom patterns. Validation studies in cisgender sexual minority (SM) adults are critical to improving detection and addressing disparities in ED identification. The present study evaluated the psychometric performance of the Brief Assessment of Stress and Eating (BASE),

Molecular characterization of a unique Recombinant form of HIV-1 subtype F2/CRF02_AG identified in Guangdong, China.

BACKGROUND: The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) pandemic continues to pose a significant global public health challenge. Recombination between HIV-1 variants generates unique recombinant forms (URFs) and then circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) after ongoing transmission. Subtype F2 and CRF02_AG mainly spread in western Africa, but they are rarely detected in China. Here, we observed a URF composed of subtypes F2 and CRF02_AG isolated from a man (230794) in Guangdong, China. METHODS: The near full-length genome (NFLG) of HIV-1 was amplified with two overlapping segments by the ne
