INTRODUCTION: The growing prevalence of vegetarianism determines the need for comprehensive study of the impact of these diets on health and particularly on bone metabolism. We hypothesized that significant dietary differences between vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and omnivores also cause significant differences in their nutrient status, which may affect bone health.
METHODS: The study assessed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry parameters in lumbar spine and femoral neck, average nutrient intake, serum nutrient concentrations, serum PTH levels, and urinary pH among 46 vegans, 38 lacto-ovo-veg

A major constraint to crop production in Sub-Saharan Africa is nutrient deficiency, especially phosphorus (P) deficiency. Phosphorus plays a crucial role in photosynthesis but is usually deficient in acidic soils since it is converted to less available forms, affecting crop yields. There is a need to improve phosphorus availability to crops for maximum production. This study assessed Minjingu phosphate rock fertilizer's impact on maize yields, soil chemical composition, and cost-effectiveness in acidic humic nitisols of Tharaka Nithi County, Upper Eastern Kenya. A field experiment in a randomi

Osteoporosis poses an important public health problem which affects millions of people worldwide. There is a direct link between calcium deficiency in diet and induction of osteoporosis and bone loss. The current study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) against osteoporosis in rats with low calcium intake. Essential oils of rosemary and thyme were analyzed. The experiment was carried out on growing male Sprague-Dawley rats; the experimental animals were divided into 5 groups: 1, control negative was fed standar

Almost all segments of the gastrointestinal tract have been used as urinary tract substitutes. The specific nutritional and gastrointestinal complications depend on the particular portion of bowel that is removed from the alimentary tract. The use of stomach theoretically may predispose the patient to hypergastrinemia and peptic ulcer disease, hypocalcemia, and iron deficiency or megaloblastic anemia. Resection of a large amount of jejunum causes malabsorption. Limited use of colon segments usually is well tolerated, but loss of large parts of the colon directly decreases available absorptive

High density lipoprotein subfraction-1 (HDL(1)) is thought to interact with the high-affinity apoprotein B, E receptors of peripheral cells and may act as a modulator of LDL binding and uptake. In the present study the concentration and composition of HDL(1) in normal and hypercholesterolemic sera were studied using zonal ultracentrifugation. To permit separation of the HDL(1) from VLDL, LDL, and Lp(a), the apoB-containing lipoproteins were first precipitated from serum using the phosphotungstic acid/magnesium chloride (PTA/MgCl(2)) method after which the supernatant fraction was subjected to

Thiocyanate anions (SCN-) as the end products of tobacco smoke and found in the blood of cigarette smokers have been implicated in atherogenesis and heart diseases. Magnesium deficiency has also been implicated in the etiology of atherogenesis. The contractile responses of rat aorta to SCN- and the modulation of extracellular magnesium ions ([Mg2+]o) on the effect of SCN- were, therefore, studied in isolated rat aortic rings. SCN- exposure at a range of concentrations (from 10(-5) to 5 x 10(-2) M) induces contractile responses of isolated rat aortic rings with and without endothelium in a conc…

BACKGROUND: In kidney transplant (KT) patients, magnesium (Mg2+) deficiency is widespread. It is often encountered early after KT, may persist longer, and is frequently promoted by calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) and tubular leakage. Studies demonstrated an association between post-KT hypomagnesemia and allograft dysfunction. The concentration of the active form, the ionized Mg2+ (iMg2+), is not measured clinically, and total Mg2+ (tMg2+) and iMg2+ correlations are conflicting. We assess the cross-sectional prevalence of hypomagnesemia in KT patients. The correlation of demographic and anthropom

Multiple sclerosis (MS) has a much higher incidence among caucasians that in any other race. Furthermore: females are much more susceptible than males and white females living in colder, wetter areas are much more susceptible than those living in warmer areas. On the other hand, menstruating women have increased copper (Cu) absorption and half-life, so they tend to accumulate more Cu than males. Moreover, rapidly growing girls have an increased demand for zinc (Zn), but their rapidly decreasing production of melatonin results in impaired Zn absorption, which is exacerbated by the high Cu level

BACKGROUND: Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis is a rare autosomal recessive tubulopathy caused by mutations in CLDN16 or CLDN19, leading to progressive chronic kidney disease. While kidney transplantation is the definitive treatment, the safety of using living-related heterozygous carrier donors remains debated due to potential subclinical tubular dysfunction. We report the 2-year follow-up of a pediatric patient with FHHNC and a CLDN19 mutation who received a graft from his heterozygous carrier mother.

Magnesium is a micronutrient essential for the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system, and Mg deficiency (MgD) is frequently associated in the clinical setting with chronic pathologies such as CHF, diabetes, hypertension, and other pathologies. Animal models of MgD have demonstrated a systemic pro-inflammatory/pro-oxidant state, involving multiple tissues/organs including neuronal, hematopoietic, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems; during later stages of MgD, a cardiomyopathy develops which may result from a cascade of inflammatory events. In rodent models of dietary MgD, a

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a rare autosomal recessive tubular disorder that is frequently associated with progressive renal failure. The primary defect is related to impaired tubular reabsorption of magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop. We have studied seven Arab patients with this syndrome who belong to four different families. The mean age at first presentation was 1.5+/-1.3 years (range 0.1-3 years) and at diagnosis 5.9+/-4.3 years (range 0.5-12 years). The presenting features were convulsions and carpop
