An efficient Fusion-Purification Network for Cervical pap-smear image classification.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In cervical cell diagnostics, autonomous screening technology constitutes the foundation of automated diagnostic systems. Currently, numerous deep learning-based classification techniques have been successfully implemented in the analysis of cervical cell images, yielding favorable outcomes. Nevertheless, efficient discrimination of cervical cells continues to be challenging due to large intra-class and small inter-class variations. The key to dealing with this problem is to capture localized informative differences from cervical cell images and to represent discrimi

Detection of Pharyngolaryngeal Activities in Real-World Settings Using Wearable Sensors.

Automatic detection and identification of pharynxgolaryngeal activities (PLA) such as swallowing, speaking, and coughing, are crucial steps in developing a system for diagnosing dysphagia (swallowing disorders) using high-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA) signals. Using sensors placed on the throat, HRCA provides clinicians with a non-invasive means of assessing swallowing. This study introduces a new approach based on depthwise CNN and LSTM networks to automatically detect and identify PLA in synchronized accelerometer and microphone signals. This method achieves an Fscore of 88% for sw

Comparison of machine and deep learning for the classification of cervical cancer based on cervicography images.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide with a mortality rate of 60%. Cervical cancer begins with no overt signs and has a long latent period, making early detection through regular checkups vitally immportant. In this study, we compare the performance of two different models, machine learning and deep learning, for the purpose of identifying signs of cervical cancer using cervicography images. Using the deep learning model ResNet-50 and the machine learning models XGB, SVM, and RF, we classified 4119 Cervicography images as positive or negative for cervical cancer

A deep learning model for gastric diffuse-type adenocarcinoma classification in whole slide images.

Gastric diffuse-type adenocarcinoma represents a disproportionately high percentage of cases of gastric cancers occurring in the young, and its relative incidence seems to be on the rise. Usually it affects the body of the stomach, and it presents shorter duration and worse prognosis compared with the differentiated (intestinal) type adenocarcinoma. The main difficulty encountered in the differential diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinomas occurs with the diffuse-type. As the cancer cells of diffuse-type adenocarcinoma are often single and inconspicuous in a background desmoplaia and inflammation

Optimised genetic algorithm-extreme learning machine approach for automatic COVID-19 detection.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19), is an ongoing global pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome. Chest Computed Tomography (CT) is an effective method for detecting lung illnesses, including COVID-19. However, the CT scan is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, this work focus on detecting COVID-19 using chest X-ray images because it is widely available, faster, and cheaper than CT scan. Many machine learning approaches such as Deep Learning, Neural Network, and Support Vector Machine; have used X-ray for detecting the COVID-19. Although the performance of those approaches is

Reproductive outcomes predicted by phase imaging with computational specificity of spermatozoon ultrastructure.

The ability to evaluate sperm at the microscopic level, at high-throughput, would be useful for assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), as it can allow specific selection of sperm cells for in vitro fertilization (IVF). The tradeoff between intrinsic imaging and external contrast agents is particularly acute in reproductive medicine. The use of fluorescence labels has enabled new cell-sorting strategies and given new insights into developmental biology. Nevertheless, using extrinsic contrast agents is often too invasive for routine clinical operation. Raising questions about cell viability,

Fused Sparse Network Learning for Longitudinal Analysis of Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with an irreversible and progressive process. To understand the brain functions and identify the biomarkers of AD and early stages of the disease [also known as, mild cognitive impairment (MCI)], it is crucial to build the brain functional connectivity network (BFCN) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Existing methods have been mainly developed using only a single time-point rs-fMRI data for classification. In fact, multiple time-point data is more effective than a single time-point data in diagnosing bra

Motion-flow-guided recurrent network for respiratory signal estimation of x-ray angiographic image sequences.

Motion compensation can eliminate inconsistencies of respiratory movement during image acquisitions for precise vascular reconstruction in the clinical diagnosis of vascular disease from x-ray angiographic image sequences. In x-ray-based vascular interventional therapy, motion modeling can simulate the process of organ deformation driven by motion signals to display a dynamic organ on angiograms without contrast agent injection. Automatic respiratory signal estimation from x-ray angiographic image sequences is essential for motion compensation and modeling. The effects of respiratory motion, c

Using Deep Learning in Ultrasound Imaging of Bicipital Peritendinous Effusion to Grade Inflammation Severity.

Inflammation of the long head of the biceps tendon is a common cause of shoulder pain. Bicipital peritendinous effusion (BPE) is the most common biceps tendon abnormality and is related to various shoulder injuries. Physicians usually use ultrasound imaging to grade the inflammation severity of the long head of the biceps tendon. However, obtaining a clear and accurate ultrasound image is difficult for inexperienced attending physicians. To reduce physicians' workload and avoid errors, an automated BPE recognition system was developed in this article for classifying inflammation into the follo

Application of Convolutional Neural Networks in the Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori Infection Based on Endoscopic Images.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The role of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori gastritis based on endoscopic images has not been evaluated. We constructed a convolutional neural network (CNN), and evaluated its ability to diagnose H. pylori infection. METHODS: A 22-layer, deep CNN was pre-trained and fine-tuned on a dataset of 32,208 images either positive or negative for H. pylori (first CNN). Another CNN was trained using images classified according to 8 anatomical locations (secondary CNN). A separate test data set (11,481 images from 397 patients) was evaluated by the CN

Development of an artificial neural network model for risk assessment of skin sensitization using human cell line activation test, direct peptide reactivity assay, KeratinoSens™ and in silico structure alert parameter.

It is important to predict the potential of cosmetic ingredients to cause skin sensitization, and in accordance with the European Union cosmetic directive for the replacement of animal tests, several in vitro tests based on the adverse outcome pathway have been developed for hazard identification, such as the direct peptide reactivity assay, KeratinoSens™ and the human cell line activation test. Here, we describe the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) prediction model for skin sensitization risk assessment based on the integrated testing strategy concept, using direct peptide re

Empirical mode decomposition and neural network for the classification of electroretinographic data.

The processing of biosignals is increasingly being utilized in ambulatory situations in order to extract significant signals' features that can help in clinical diagnosis. However, this task is hampered by the fact that biomedical signals exhibit a complex behavior characterized by strong nonlinear and non-stationary properties that cannot always be perceived by simple visual examination. New processing methods need be considered. In this context, we propose a signal processing method, based on empirical mode decomposition and artificial neural networks, to analyze electroretinograms, i.e., th

An adaptive singular spectrum analysis approach to murmur detection from heart sounds.

Murmur is the result of various heart abnormalities. A new robust approach for separation of murmur from heart sound has been suggested in this article. Singular spectrum analysis (SSA) has been adapted to the changes in the statistical properties of the data and effectively used for detection of murmur from single-channel heart sound (HS) signals. Incorporating a cleverly selected a priori within the SSA reconstruction process, results in an accurate separation of normal HS from the murmur segment. Another contribution of this work is selection of the correct subspace of the desired signal co

Further validation of artificial neural network-based emissions simulation models for conventional and hybrid electric vehicles.

With the advent of hybrid electric vehicles, computer-based vehicle simulation becomes more useful to the engineer and designer trying to optimize the complex combination of control strategy, power plant, drive train, vehicle, and driving conditions. With the desire to incorporate emissions as a design criterion, researchers at West Virginia University have developed artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. The ANN models were trained on engine and exhaust emissions data collected from transient dynamometer tests of heavy-duty diesel engines the

A novel wavelet neural network based pathological stage detection technique for an oral precancerous condition.

AIM: To describe a novel neural network based oral precancer (oral submucous fibrosis; OSF) stage detection method. METHOD: The wavelet coefficients of transmission electron microscopy images of collagen fibres from normal oral submucosa and OSF tissues were used to choose the feature vector which, in turn, was used to train the artificial neural network. RESULTS: The trained network was able to classify normal and oral precancer stages (less advanced and advanced) after obtaining the image as an input. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained from this proposed technique were promising and sugges

Exploring the impact of plasticity-related recovery after brain damage in a connectionist model of single-word reading.

The effect of retraining a damaged connectionist model of single-word reading was investigated with the aim of establishing whether plasticity-related changes occurring during the recovery process can contribute to our understanding of the pattern of dissociations found in brain-damaged patients. In particular, we sought to reproduce the strong frequency x consistency interactions found in surface dyslexia. A replication of Plaut, McClelland, Seidenberg, and Patterson's (1996) model of word reading was damaged and then retrained, using a standard backpropagation algorithm. Immediately after da
