Osteocalcin expression in pulp inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pulp inflammation and repair are closely related. Osteocalcin (OCN), a glycoprotein present in dentin matrix, is expressed by odontoblasts. Although OCN is considered a reparative molecule inside the dental pulp, it is not clear if it is involved in pulpal inflammation. The objective of this study was to localize OCN in reversible and irreversible pulpitis and to describe its possible function in inflammation. METHODS: Pulp tissues in the form of reversible and irreversible pulpitis were collected from the endodontic clinic. Those from impacted teeth were used as controls

Pilot study of sex differences in chemokine/cytokine markers of atherosclerosis in humans.

BACKGROUND: Atherogenic processes increase in women after menopause, when the risk of cardiovascular adverse events approaches that observed in age-matched men. In experimental animals, ovariectomy increases the platelet content of mitogenic cytokines, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which when released into the blood or site of vascular injury, contribute to atherogenic processes. OBJECTIVE: Experiments were designed to assess the sex distribution of inflammatorychemokines/cytokines, which may be released from platelets in the serum of middle-aged women and men in whom the ext

VAP-1, Eotaxin3 and MIG as potential atherosclerotic triggers of severe calcified and stenotic human aortic valves: effects of statins.

Sclerotic calcification of the aortic valve is a common disease in advanced age. Its pathophysiology is unclear. However, pathobiological similarities to atherosclerosis have been shown in several studies. The current study assesses gene profiling of severe calcified stenotic human aortic valves identifying transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta, Eotaxin3, vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) and monokine induced by interferon-gamma (MIG) as potential atherosclerotic target genes in severe calcified and stenotic aortic valves, and analyzes the effects of statins on their expression as part of an

Experience with autogenous arteriovenous access for hemodialysis in children and adolescents.

The National Kidney Foundation's DOQI-NKF recommendation to construct an autogenous arteriovenous access (AAVA) for chronic hemodialysis whenever possible can be a challenge in the pediatric population. This report reviews recent surgical experience in this patient subgroup. From March 1999 to April 2004, 47 consecutive children requiring permanent vascular access had construction of AAVA. There were 16 girls and 31 boys, with a mean age of 14.6 years (range 5-20). The surgeon preoperatively mapped veins with ultrasound in all patients. Access sites were radial-cephalic (n = 16), upper arm bra

18Fluorine-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography to evaluate arterial calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease: a pilot study.

18Fluorine-Sodium Fluoride Positron Emission Tomography (18F-NaF PET) allows for the detection of arterial micro-calcification, but its data on people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is limited. This pilot study aimed to determine the optimal time to perform 18F-NaF PET static scan and to characterize arterial macro- and micro-calcification in CKD. In 7 patients with CKD stages 3b-4 and 3 non-CKD individuals, following the injection of 18F-NaF, an electrocardiogram-gated chest CT, a 30-min dynamic PET, and three 10-min static PET were acquired. Radiopharmaceutical uptake was quantified for r

Relation of Thoracic Aortic and Coronary Artery Calcium to Cardiovascular Risk Factors (from The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health [ELSA-Brazil]).

Thoracic aortic calcium (TAC) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death. However, risk factors associated with arterial calcium may vary across vascular beds. We verified whether TAC is associated with the same risk factors as is CAC in adults without established CVD. Cross-sectional analysis including 2,433 participants (aged 38 to 78 years) of ELSA-Brasil cohort in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Nonenhanced ECG-gated multislice computed tomography were performed to detect calcium in the thoracic aorta and the coronaries (2015 to

Subclinical coronary atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk stratification in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia patients undergoing statin treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the heterogeneity of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and evidence and limitations of clinical risk scores and subclinical coronary atherosclerosis (SCA) imaging to evaluate risk. RECENT FINDINGS: Risk evaluation in contemporary familial hypercholesterolemia cohorts needs to consider the cause of the familial hypercholesterolemia phenotype, for example the presence of autosomal molecular defects that impart a greater ASCVD risk than in polygenic hypercholesterolemia, prospective follow-up and the im

Unified mechanisms for self-RNA recognition by RIG-I Singleton-Merten syndrome variants.

The innate immune sensor retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) detects cytosolic viral RNA and requires a conformational change caused by both ATP and RNA binding to induce an active signaling state and to trigger an immune response. Previously, we showed that ATP hydrolysis removes RIG-I from lower-affinity self-RNAs (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib19">Lässig et al., 2015</xref>), revealing how ATP turnover helps RIG-I distinguish viral from self-RNA and explaining why a mutation in a motif that slows down ATP hydrolysis causes the autoimmune disease Singleton-Merten syndrome (SMS). Here we s
