Pulmonary sequestration: angioarchitecture evaluated by three-dimensional computed tomography angiography.

Pulmonary sequestration represents an anomaly of nonfunctioning tracheobronchial branching with retention of the embryonic systemic arterial supply. We report a case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration, in which the abnormal supplying artery and especially the abnormal draining vein were demonstrated by three-dimensional computed tomography angiography and were confirmed and treated using a video-assisted thoracoscopic procedure.

Unsuccessful left ventricular lead implantation in two first-degree relatives. Is the coronary venous anatomy similar in both cases?

We reported on two unsuccessful implantations of the left ventricular lead in two first-degree relatives due to inability to cannulate the coronary sinus (CS). The anatomy of the coronary venous system investigated by means of dual source computed tomography showed several similarities in both patients: narrowing of the proximal part of CS and a small number of CS tributaries.

Polycystic liver disease with obstructive jaundice: treatment with ultrasound-guided cyst aspiration.

A 59-year-old woman with polycystic liver (PCLD) and kidney disease (PCKD) presented with jaundice, fever, and abdominal pain. A computered tomographic (CT) scan performed immediately after an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram (ERCP) clearly demonstrated a hepatic cyst obstructing the biliary system. The cyst was then aspirated under ultrasound guidance with complete relief of obstruction.

Advances in Functional Vascular Stents for Cardiovascular Therapy with Drug Delivery and Computational Design.

Vascular stents are crucial devices in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and their structural design and function critically affect therapeutic efficacy and patient prognosis. Conventional stents can effectively restore vascular patency by providing mechanical support to blood vessels. However, they still face significant challenges including restenosis, thrombosis, and limited adaptability to complex patient-specific lesion characteristics. To address these limitations, drug delivery offers an important strategy to modulate the pathological microenvironment, enhance long-term vascular

A quantitative pipeline for whole-mount deep imaging and analysis of multi-layered organoids across scales.

Whole-mount 3D imaging at the cellular scale is a powerful tool for exploring complex processes during morphogenesis. In organoids, it allows examining tissue architecture, cell types, and morphology simultaneously in 3D models. However, cell packing in multilayered organoid tissues hinders both deep imaging and quantification of cell-scale processes. To address these challenges, we developed an experimental and computational pipeline to extract properties at scales ranging from cell to tissue. The experimental module is based on two-photon imaging of immunostained organoids. The computational

Ultra-Low-Field Brain MRI for Point-of-Care Applications: A Technology Review.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a cornerstone of neurological care, serving as the gold standard for diagnosing pathologies, such as brain tumors and, together with computed tomography, stroke. However, the high capital costs, specialized infrastructure requirements such as expensive and bulky radiofrequency-shielding cages, and the operational complexity of conventional high-field scanners (1.5T and 3T) largely confine MRI to centralized imaging facilities. This scenario often leads to reliance on brain computed tomography or ultrasound in point-of-care settings, despite MRI's superior so

Delay-and-Sum Consistent Wavenumber Algorithm.

Fourier-domain beamforming methods offer a computationally efficient alternative to time-domain methods in ultrasound imaging. Among these, the wavenumber algorithm (WA) achieves fast image reconstruction from full-matrix capture (FMC) data but introduces amplitude distortions due to its inherent weighting. In this study, we present a modified Fourier-domain beamforming method that operates on FMC data and reproduces the amplitude response of the conventional delay-and-sum (DAS) method while maintaining the computational efficiency of WA. This is achieved through a derivation of a correction f

Systemic sterile nodular panniculitis associated with an intra-abdominal mass in a dog.

A 12-year-old spayed female dog was referred because of recurrent febrile syndrome and palpable abdominal mass. Ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a non-parenchymal abdominal mass. Multiple deep subcutaneous nodules with mixed fluid- and fat-attenuating centers were identified on computed tomography. Surgical exploration revealed that the mass was located near the tip of the left uterine horn. The mass was removed and the subcutaneous nodules were sampled for analysis. Histology together with negative microbial cultures indicated sterile pyogranulomatous steatitis

Ab initio machine-learning unveils strong anharmonicity in non-Arrhenius self-diffusion of tungsten.

The knowledge of diffusion mechanisms in materials is crucial for predicting their high-temperature performance and stability, yet accurately capturing the underlying physics like thermal effects remains challenging. In particular, the origin of the experimentally observed non-Arrhenius diffusion behavior has remained elusive, largely due to the lack of effective computational tools. Here we propose an efficient ab initio framework to compute the Gibbs energy of the transition state in vacancy-mediated diffusion including the relevant thermal excitations at the density-functional-theory level.

Computational Approaches in Spatial Transcriptomics for the Study of Mammalian Spermatogenesis.

Spermatogenesis is a complex and dynamic cellular differentiation process critical to male fertility. Although the full continuum of gene expression patterns from spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) to spermatozoa in steady state was characterized using single-cell RNA sequencing technologies, the transcriptional dynamics of spermatogenesis within its native tissue context was largely unexplored. The recent development of spatial transcriptomics (ST) technologies has transformed male fertility research from a single-cell level to a two-dimensional spatial coordinate system and facilitated the stu

Enhanced Prediction of Absorption and Emission Wavelengths of Organic Compounds through Hybrid Graph Neural Network Architectures.

The prediction of absorption and emission spectra is a crucial task in chemistry and materials science, traditionally addressed with computational methods, such as density functional theory (DFT). While DFT can deliver with high accuracy, its substantial computational cost and long run times hinder its scalability for large molecular systems. In this study, we present an efficient graph neural network (GNN)-based approach for predicting optical properties. Our method combines molecular graph representations with molecular fingerprints, allowing the model to capture detailed structural and elec

Amino Acids as Catalysts for the Regioselective Rearrangement of Epoxides into Ketones.

The combination of a natural amino acid (AA) (l-Glu, l-Tyr, and l-Lys) and tetrabutylammonium iodide was efficiently employed as a catalytic framework for the Meinwald rearrangement of various epoxides into their respective ketones under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. The designed catalytic system has shown a good catalytic performance in the conversion of epoxides with different functional groups. The reaction is regioselective toward ketone formation, and these have been obtained in good to excellent yields. l-Glu was found to be the most active AA for this catalytic tran

Emulation of neuron and synaptic functions in spin-orbit torque domain wall devices.

Neuromorphic computing (NC) architecture has shown its suitability for energy-efficient computation. Amongst several systems, spin-orbit torque (SOT) based domain wall (DW) devices are one of the most energy-efficient contenders for NC. To realize spin-based NC architecture, the computing elements such as synthetic neurons and synapses need to be developed. However, there are very few experimental investigations on DW neurons and synapses. The present study demonstrates the energy-efficient operations of neurons and synapses by using novel reading and writing strategies. We have used a W/CoFeB

Computational Simulation of Colorectal Cancer Biomarker Particle Mobility in a 3D Model.

Even though some methods for the detection of colorectal cancer have been used clinically, most of the techniques used do not consider the in situ detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) biomarkers, which would favor in vivo real-time monitoring of the carcinogenesis process and consequent studies of the disease. In order to give a scientific and computational framework ideal for the evaluation of diagnosis techniques based on the early detection of biomarker molecules modeled as spherical particles from the computational point of view, a computational representation of the rectum, stool and biom

Pyogenic liver abscesses in a child spreading to pulmonary and subcutaneous tissues: case report.

Pyogenic liver abscess is a rare and life-threatening disease in children. Our case is noteworthy because of the rapid advancement of liver abscesses without any other systemic disorder. A 16-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital with fatigue, pallor, weight loss and high fever. In physical examination a fluctuating mass was observed under the scapular area and hepatosplenomegaly was found. In computed tomography, three septated cystic lesions which looked like abscesses were demonstrated in the liver. The abscess was drained through percutaneous route. Right pleural empyema with clinical

Intrapulmonary CO2-rise time and ventilation in ducks.

Many investigators have reported finding intrapulmonary chemoreceptors (IPCs) in several species of birds and reptiles; however, the role of IPCs in ventilatory control in birds has not been identified. This study was undertaken to assess the role of intrapulmonary CO2 dynamics on the control of breathing. Ducks were unidirectionally ventilated, and their breathing was monitored with a pneumotachograph connected to a personal computer. A gas-mixing system controlled by the computer adjusted the rate of rise of airway CO2 concentration ([CO2]). On inspiration, the computer removed CO2 from the
