A systematic review on feature extraction methods and deep learning models for detection of cancerous lung nodules at an early stage -the recent trends and challenges.

Lung cancer is one of the most common life-threatening worldwide cancers affecting both the male and the female populations. The appearance of nodules in the scan image is an early indication of the development of cancer cells in the lung. The Low Dose Computed Tomography screening technique is used for the early detection of cancer nodules. Therefore, with more Computed Tomography (CT) lung profiles, an automated lung nodule analysis system can be utilized through image processing techniques and neural network algorithms. A CT image of the lung consists of many elements such as blood vessels,

Worry less about the algorithm, more about the sequence of events.

Background: Many algorithms exist for learning network structure and parameters from data. Some of these algorithms include Grow Shrink, Incremental Association Markov Blanket, IAMB, Fast IAMB, and Interleaved IAMB, Hill Climbing, Restricted Maximization and Maximum-Minimum Hill Climbing. These algorithms optimize the fit to the data, while ignoring the order of occurrences of the variables in the network structure. Objective: This paper examines if sequence information (i.e., one variable occurs before another) can make algorithms for learning directed acyclical graph networks more accurate.

Predicting acute decompensated heart failure using circadian markers from heart rate time series.

AIMS: Hospital admissions for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) are linked to high readmission rates, emphasizing the need for early intervention. Dysregulation of the circadian rhythm that regulates key physiological processes, such as heart rate (HR), blood pressure and sleep-wake cycles, may precede weight gain and clinical symptoms of worsening heart failure (HF) by weeks, providing a window for timely intervention. This study aims to develop a predictive algorithm for early and accurate ADHF detection. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty-five patients discharged after ADHF hospitalization

Early Prediction of Cardiogenic Shock Using Machine Learning.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a severe condition with in-hospital mortality of up to 50%. Patients who develop CS may have previous cardiac history, but that may not always be the case, adding to the challenges in optimally identifying and managing these patients. Patients may present to a medical facility with CS or develop CS while in the emergency department (ED), in a general inpatient ward (WARD) or in the critical care unit (CC). While different clinical pathways for management exist once CS is recognized, there are challenges in identifying the patients in a timely manner, in all settings,

A Machine Learning Application to Predict Early Lung Involvement in Scleroderma: A Feasibility Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a systemic immune-mediated disease, featuring fibrosis of the skin and organs, and has the greatest mortality among rheumatic diseases. The nervous system involvement has recently been demonstrated, although actual lung involvement is considered the leading cause of death in SSc and, therefore, should be diagnosed early. Pulmonary function tests are not sensitive enough to be used for screening purposes, thus they should be flanked by other clinical examinations; however, this would lead to a risk of overtesting, with considerable costs for the health

Prediction of Left Ventricle Pressure Indices Via a Machine Learning Approach Combining ECG, Pulse Oximetry, and Cardiac Sounds: a Preclinical Feasibility Study.

Heart failure (HF) is defined as the inability of the heart to meet body oxygen demand requiring an elevation in left ventricular filling pressures (LVP) to compensate. LVP increase can be assessed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, but this procedure is invasive and time-consuming to the extent that physicians rather rely on non-invasive diagnostic tools. In this work, we assess the feasibility to develop a novel machine-learning (ML) approach to predict clinically relevant LVP indices. Synchronized invasive (pressure-volume tracings) and non-invasive signals (ECG, pulse oximetry, and

Tuning of Kalman filter parameters via genetic algorithm for state-of-charge estimation in battery management system.

In this work, a state-space battery model is derived mathematically to estimate the state-of-charge (SoC) of a battery system. Subsequently, Kalman filter (KF) is applied to predict the dynamical behavior of the battery model. Results show an accurate prediction as the accumulated error, in terms of root-mean-square (RMS), is a very small value. From this work, it is found that different sets of Q and R values (KF's parameters) can be applied for better performance and hence lower RMS error. This is the motivation for the application of a metaheuristic algorithm. Hence, the result is further i
