Based on anatomical background authors review the current knowledge on mechanisms and anatomical predisposes causing abdominal herniations. They are giving a brief summary of limitations of potential spaces involved into dislocation of abdominal visceral through natural spaces. Authors try to join anatomical knowledge with clinical information what might be useful in understanding of the patomechanism of these surgical disorders.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used for assessing skeletal muscle characteristics. In cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), reduced limb muscle mass predicts poor clinical outcomes. However, the degree to which quantity or quality of respiratory and nonrespiratory muscles is affected by these diseases remains controversial.
METHODS: Thoracic CT images of 29 CF, 21 COPD and 20 normal spirometry control subjects were analysed to measure indices of muscle quantity (volume or cross-sectional area) and quality (radiodensity) in respiratory (di

The blood flow to the diaphragm, external and internal intercostal muscles, abdominal oblique muscles, and other rib-cage and abdominal muscles was measured, using radio-labelled microspheres, in 6 newborn lambs quietly breathing in air and during 3 different levels of CO2 induced hypercapnic hyperpnoea (inspired gas containing 4%, 5.5%, or 7% CO2). We also calculated the oxygen uptake of the diaphragm (VO2di). While the lambs were breathing air diaphragmatic blood flow (Qdi, 38.2 +/- 4.0 SEM ml.min-1.100 g-1) was similar to external intercostal muscle blood flow (Qei, 37.1 +/- 8.1 ml.min-1.10…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of core stabilization training based on biofeedback for postpartum rectus abdominis muscle separation.
METHODS: Thirty patients aged 20-35 years with rectus diastasis after pregnancy were randomly divided into experimental group and control group. The control group received routine core stabilization training, including abdominal breathing training, bridge exercises and kneeling abdominal exercises. The experimental group performed core stabilization training based on biofeedback. Before and after intervention, rectus abdominis muscle distance, waist cir

Respiratory failure associated with diaphragmatic weakness is the first cause of death in late-onset type II glycogenosis (LO-GSDII). We aim … to supine DW did not increase ICCW and ICAB. ΔFVC occurs in LO-GSDII due to weakened diaphragm and abdominal muscles while intercostals are preserved. %VAB represents a new reliable index to detect diaphragmatic weakness.

Flying sphingids generate unidirectional ventilation with an inflow through the anterior thoracic spiracles and an outflow through the posterior thoracic spiracles. This phenomenon was documented by the CO2 emission and tracheal air pressure in split-chamber experiments in preceding studies. In the present study, we evaluated the function of the air pump mechanism by measuring the tracheal pressure and PO2 in the air sacs and monitoring the wing beat using photocells. Microelectrodes recorded the abdomen flexing muscles and abdominal transverse muscle septum. The crucial structure was the vert

INTRODUCTION: Camptocormia is frequently seen in Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy. It is characterized by a pathological … y higher than in controls, often reaching half-maximal amplitudes. Their rectus femoris and oblique abdominal muscles were overactive, but to a lesser extent.
CONCLUSIONS: PD patients with camptocormia must use the functional reserve of their lumbar trunk muscles to counteract gravity. We interpret this as a weakness of the paravertebral muscles. Compared to the o …

Abscess as a complication of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a rare condition. We present the computed tomography findings of an abdominal wall abscess that occurred after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for which prophylactic antibiotics had not been given. The abscess destroyed the posterior abdominal wall muscles and dissected into the thorax. The muscles were thickened and showed enhancement. A parenchymal defect in the right kidney adjacent to a caliceal stone, with strands extending from this defective region to the abscess, was observed, and was thought to be the result o

Volvulus of the small bowel without predisposing anatomical defects is a rare cause of acute intestinal obstruction in the Western world, and its incidence is decreasing in Europe and America, although it is common in others parts of the world. The causes of primary volvulus of the small bowel and the mechanism of rotation of the entire root of the mesentery remain unexplained. Several anatomical and dietary factors have been implicated. This theory requires strong peristalsis, tense, firm abdominal muscles and feeding pattern of very bulky meals taken at long intervals. In the present case, a…

AIM: Ruptured aortic aneurysm can be a cause of acute abdomen. Nowadays using modern diagnostic techniques diagnosis is very easy. We report a particular case of a misdiagnosed ruptured aortic aneurysm.
CASE REPORT: Man 65 y.o. admitted to hospital for abdominal pain and stipsis. After 1 week he developed acute abdomen with muscular rigidity and mild acute anemia. Few days before contrast studies showed a sigmoid diverticular disease. At laparotomy a ruptured aortic aneurysm sealed from retroperitoneal fascia and extended to abdominal walls up to rectus abdominis muscles was found.

A pure anaerobic infection of the abdominal wall of a 40-year-old man is described. The infection originated from an urachal remnant. Seven different bacterial strains were isolated. Even though no clostridia were involved, the infection caused extensive necrosis of the abdominal wall including both fascia and muscles.

The abdominal wall, a complex anatomical structure, is vital in protecting abdominal organs and maintaining intra-abdominal pressure. Given its intricate composition of muscles, fascia, and connective tissues, accurate imaging and interpretation of abdominal wall pathologies are essential for radiologists. Conditions such as hernias, traumatic injuries, infections, and tumors are common yet often challenging to diagnose. This pictorial review aims to provide radiologists with a comprehensive understanding of abdominal wall anatomy and essential findings in cross-sectional imaging across variou

The male pelvic floor muscles support the abdominal contents, are active during breathing, maintain urinary and faecal continence, increase local blood supply and are active during sexual intercourse. It was hypothesized that weak pelvic floor muscles would compromise these functions in men and lead to urinary and faecal incontinence and sexual dysfunction and that pelvic floor muscle strengthening would restore normal function. After a literature search of randomized controlled trials was undertaken, it was found that weak pelvic floor muscles compromised normal pelvic floor function and led

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the use of dynamic MRI to assess abdominal wall biomechanics before and after hernia surgery, considering that such evaluations can enhance our understanding of physiopathology and contribute to reducing recurrence rates.
METHODS: Patients were assessed using dynamic MRI in axial and sagittal planes while performing exercises (breathing, coughing, Valsalva) before and after their abdominal hernia surgery with mesh placement. Rectus and lateral muscles, linea alba, viscera area, defect dimensions and hernia sac were contoured with semiautomatic process t

The effects of muscle spindle activation on different postural muscles were examined in eight volunteers, using a force platform technique. Small electrical vibrators were placed symmetrically over the muscles concerned and the effects of vibration frequencies of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 Hz were studied at a constant amplitude of 0.4 mm (peak-to-peak). Significant responses were observed in most muscles. The responses were observed (in maximum response order) from: the neck, triceps surae, gluteus, abdominal, hamstring, quadriceps, lumbar and tibialis anterior muscles. The response direction did

Musculoskeletal models can uniquely estimate in vivo demands and injury risk. In this study, we aimed to compare muscle activations from subject-specific thoracolumbar spine OpenSim models with recorded muscle activity from electromyography (EMG) during five dynamic tasks. Specifically, 11 older adults (mean = 65 years, SD = 9) lifted a crate weighted to 10% of their body mass in axial rotation, 2-handed sagittal lift, 1-handed sagittal lift, and lateral bending, and simulated a window opening task. EMG measurements of back and abdominal muscles were directly compared to equivalent model-predi…
