Imaging of pediatric musculoskeletal trauma: Age-specific considerations and challenges.

Pediatric musculoskeletal trauma differs significantly from adult injuries due to the dynamic and evolving nature of the growing skeleton. The presence of open growth plates (physes), secondary ossification centers, and a more elastic bone structure contributes to unique injury patterns and imaging findings in children. Proper interpretation of pediatric imaging requires an in-depth understanding of age-specific anatomy, biomechanics, and normal developmental variants. This review provides a comprehensive overview of pediatric bone physiology and fracture types, including the Salter-Harris cla

Pediatric spinal injuries- current concepts.

Spinal injuries in children contribute to the highest mortality and morbidity among all pediatric injuries. Fortunately, these injuries are a rare clinical entity but pose a difficulty in diagnosis due to challenges in neurological evaluation of a child and varied radiological presentation. Anatomical and biomechanical aspects of developing musculoskeletal system, relative plasticity of the pediatric spine make children vulnerable to spine injuries. Though motor vehicle collisions are common, children also suffer non-accidental trauma, falls and sports injuries. More chances of cervical spine

Injuries and anatomical variations of the female genitalia.

BACKGROUND: Female genital injuries are often underreported or misinterpreted, particularly in cases of sexual violence. Until now, most research has focused on injuries caused by sexual intercourse, while injuries arising from everyday activities or anatomical variations have received less attention. This study aims to document genital injuries in healthy women, regardless of sexual assault, in order to contribute to an understanding of genital injury patterns and improve forensic interpretation. METHODS: A monocentric observational study was conducted including 100 healthy female volunteers

Is breast feeding in bed always a safe practice?

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether infants who are being breast fed in their mother's bed are at increased risk of accidental suffocation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review of all cases of unexpected infant death occurring in South Australia, Australia during 1996 was undertaken to ascertain whether any cases of sudden infant death had occurred in association with breast feeding in the parental bed. All infants had death scene examinations, history reviews and full autopsies performed. RESULTS: Three of a total of 28 cases of unexpected infant death were identified where accidental asphyxia associat

Labyrinthine trauma during ear surgery.

Surgical trauma inflicted upon the membranous labyrinth is an uncommon, but often catastrophic, complication of chronic ear surgery. Areas most vulnerable to injury are the oval window and the lateral semicircular canal. Methods of injury include subluxation of the footplate, fracture of the lateral canal by drill or chisel, and accidental opening of a fistula. Three cases of labyrinthotomy of the lateral canal during ear surgery are presented. Two occurred while drilling, and the other was associated with a dehiscence of the bony and membranous labyrinth from a cholesteatoma. The cases are do

Injury reports in a dental school: a two-year overview.

As teaching institutions, it is vital for dental schools to collect data on accidental injuries to identify potential problems, improve the quality of care of patients, and educate future practitioners about risk management. Our data reveal important trends concerning such injuries. These data were compiled over a two-year period (2001-03) from accident reports at one dental school. We categorized the accidents as follows: source (instrument causing the injury), recipient of injury, time of day, location within the dental school where the injury occurred, and body part injured. The population …

US infant mortality trends attributable to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed from 1984 through 2004: are rates increasing?

OBJECTIVE: Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, a subgroup of sudden, unexpected infant deaths, is a leading mechanism of injury-related infant deaths. We explored trends and characteristics of these potentially preventable deaths. METHODS: In this descriptive study, we analyzed US infant mortality data from 1984 through 2004. To explore trends in accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed and other sudden, unexpected infant deaths, we calculated cause-specific infant mortality rates and estimated proportionate mortality. Sudden, unexpected infant death was defined as a combi

Forensic Features of Clothing-Related Deaths: Historical and Cultural Aspects.

Clothing may both cause death and contribute to ongoing lethal mechanisms by a variety of quite disparate mechanisms. The manner of death may be accidental, suicidal, or homicidal. Accidental deaths include burning from clothing catching on fire, strangulation from clothing tangling in vehicle wheels or exposed machinery, and drowning. Entanglement of clothing in machinery may also result in significant injuries, which are not uncommon in farming communities. Excessive clothing, or its absence, may significantly alter body temperature, and hanging from clothing is a feature in the young or in

[Accidental explosions in Denmark when working on containers for combustible fluids].

Gases may be formed in containers for inflammable fluids and these may burn explosively if lit. Even apparently empty containers may contain sufficient quantities of gas to result in violent explosions precipitated by procedures which produce heat or sparks in the neighbourhood of the container. Seventeen persons were found to be injured in accidents of this type in a Danish investigation. Two of the accidental injuries proved fatal. The serious risk involved in handling and treating containers which contain or have contained inflammable fluids is, therefore, emphasized.

Post-Cranial Traumatic Injury Patterns in Two Medieval Polish Populations: The Effects of Lifestyle Differences.

Traumatic injuries can be used as general indicators of activity patterns in past populations. This study tests the hypothesis that contemporaneous (10th-12th century) rural and urban populations in medieval Poland will have a significantly different prevalence of non-violent fractures. Traumatic injuries to the post-cranial skeleton were recorded for 180 adults from rural Giecz and for 96 adults from urban Poznań-Śródka. They were statistically analyzed by body region and individual skeletal element. Results reveal that Giecz had a significantly higher rate of trunk fractures than Poznań-Śród

Violence against women: An observational study in an Italian emergency department.

Violence against women is a pervasive phenomenon affecting one in three women aged ≥15 in the world that are more likely to visit an emergency department (ED) for the serious physical and psychological consequences of the abuse. The aim of this observational single-centre study is to describe the socio-demographic and clinical variables associated with violence against women. We enrolled 425 female patients who attended an Italian ED for trauma on 2019 and the patients' information was collected and analyzed with descriptive statistics. The average age of the patients was 41.5 (standard deviat

Splenic protection in left upper quadrant operations.

Splenectomy produces significant immediate and long-term risks for the patient, and there is general agreement that it should be reserved for clear-cut unavoidable indications. However, accidental injury to the spleen in the course of another operation (incidental splenectomy,) accounts for almost 40% of splenectomies in some series. Incidental splenectomy is most likely to occur in left upper quadrant operations such as proximal gastric vagotomy, or in colonic operations involving mobilization of the splenic flexure. Incidental splenectomy rates of between 2% and 9% have been reported in asso

Sharps injuries in ophthalmic practice.

PURPOSE: Accidental sharps injuries are a potential route for transmission of blood-borne infection to healthcare workers. Ophthalmic staff in particular are at risk of sustaining such injuries due to the microsurgical nature of the speciality. Forthcoming European Union legislation aimed at reducing sharps injuries requires the development of risk-based sharps policy. The authors believe that this is the first study to assess the risks of sharps injuries and their management specific to ophthalmic practice within the European Union. METHODS: A retrospective review of all reported sharps inju
