Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and blink reflexes in patients with pontocerebellar angle tumors.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and blink reflexes (BR) were obtained from 13 patients with pontocerebellar angle (PCA) tumors whose pathological diagnosis was as follows: 7 acoustic neurinoma, 3 meningioma, 1 neurinoma, 1 brain stem epidermoid tumor, 1 arteriovenous malformation. The most prominent abnormality was noted in BAEP generated by stimulating the ear ipsilateral to the lesion and ipsilateral R1 reflexes obtained from ipsilateral stimulation of the supraorbital nerve.

Vocal Tremor: Novel Therapeutic Target for Deep Brain Stimulation.

Tremulous voice is characteristically associated with essential tremor, and is referred to as essential vocal tremor (EVT). Current estimates suggest that up to 40% of individuals diagnosed with essential tremor also present with EVT, which is associated with an impaired quality of life. Traditional EVT treatments have demonstrated limited success in long-term management of symptoms. However, voice tremor has been noted to decrease in patients receiving deep brain stimulation (DBS) with the targeting of thalamic nuclei. In this study, we describe our multidisciplinary procedure for awake, fram

Cortical oscillations predict auditory grouping in listeners with various hearing configurations.

Auditory grouping relies on the ability to bind tones with coherent spectral features over time to form auditory objects. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) degrades spectral resolution, and the extent of this degradation varies with the hearing configuration. However, it remains unclear how SNHL impacts auditory grouping and whether different hearing configurations affect this ability. This study investigated task performance and cortical activity during auditory object detection in four groups with different hearing configurations: Twenty normal-hearing (NH) listeners, seventeen bilateral hea

Clinical predictors of facial nerve outcome after translabyrinthine resection of acoustic neuromas.

PURPOSE: The translabyrinthine approach to acoustic neuroma resection offers excellent exposure for facial nerve dissection with 95% preservation of anatomic continuity. Acceptable outcome in facial asymptomatic patients is reported at 64-90%, but transient postoperative deterioration often occurs. The objective of this study was to identify preoperative clinical presentation and intraoperative surgical findings that predispose patients to facial nerve dysfunction after acoustic neuroma surgery. METHODS: The charts of 128 consecutive translabyrinthine patients were examined retrospectively to

Detecting Defects in Composite Polymers by Using 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry.

The technique of 3D scanning laser Doppler vibrometry has recently appeared as a promising tool of nondestructive evaluation of discontinuity-like defects in composite polymers. The use of the phenomenon of local defect resonance (LDR) allows intensifying vibrations in defect zones, which can reliably be detected by means of laser vibrometry. The resonance acoustic stimulation of structural defects in materials causes compression/tension deformations, which are essentially lower than the material tensile strength, thus proving a nondestructive character of the LDR technique. In this study, the…

Stability of the medial olivocochlear reflex as measured by distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the repeatability of a fine-resolution, distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE)-based assay of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex in normal-hearing adults. METHOD: Data were collected during 36 test sessions from 4 normal-hearing adults to assess short-term stability and 5 normal-hearing adults to assess long-term stability. DPOAE level and phase measurements were recorded with and without contralateral acoustic stimulation. MOC reflex indices were computed by (a) noting contralateral acoustic stimulation-induced changes in DPOAE lev…

Kinematics of phonotactic steering in the walking cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (de Geer).

Female crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus, are attracted by the male calling song and approach singing males; a behaviour known as phonotaxis. Even tethered females walking on a trackball steer towards a computer-generated male song presented from their left or right side. High-speed video analysis showed how this auditory-evoked steering was integrated with walking. Typically all the front and middle legs showed kinematic adjustments during steering, with the trajectories tilted towards the side of acoustic stimulation. Furthermore, the average speed of the tarsi contralateral to song increased re…

Anxiety levels and wild running susceptibility in rats: assessment with elevated plus maze test and predator odor exposure.

It is reported in the literature that nearly 20% of rats are susceptible to displays of wild running (WR) behavior when submitted to high intensity acoustic stimulation. Some characteristics of WR suggest that it can be viewed as a panic-like reaction. This work aimed to test whether WR-sensitive rats show higher levels of anxiety in elevated-plus-maze (EPM) and predator-odor exposure paradigms in comparison with WR-resistant ones. Male adult Wistar rats were submitted to two trials of acoustic stimulation (104 dB, 60 s) in order to assess WR susceptibility. Seven WR-sensitive and 15 WR-resist…

Effect of contralateral masking on the latency of otoacoustic emissions elicited by acoustic distortion products.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) are sound products generated by the outer hair cells (OHC) in the inner ear. The OHC are capable of moving spontaneously or in response to acoustic stimuli (spontaneous otoacoustic emissions and evoked otoacoustic emissions), these movements are known as electromotility. Electromotility is affected when contralateral acoustic stimulation is introduced to the ear. Different types of stimuli may produce this response. Clicks, pure tones, and white masking noise have been used as contralateral stimulation. This effect appears to be mediated by the medial efferent olivo…

Effects of electrical brainstem stimulation on tinnitus.

The primary aim of the auditory brainstem implant (ABI), an investigational device, is to restore auditory sensations in neurofibromatosis-2 patients deafened by bilateral acoustic neuroma surgery. An electrode is placed on the dorsal cochlear nucleus after the tumor is removed through the translabyrinthine approach. This procedure was performed on 18 patients: 13 were completely deafferentated after bilateral tumor removal and had received the ABI during surgery on the second-sided tumor; 5 were implanted at first-sided tumor removal. Three of these 5 patients had usable hearing remaining on

A national survey of facial paralysis on the quality of life of patients with acoustic neuroma.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this survey was to objectively quantify the impact of facial palsy on the quality of life of acoustic neuroma patients. METHODS: The Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) Scale was emailed to all members of the British Acoustic Neuroma Association (BANA). RESULTS: Of the 880 BANA members contacted, 398 (45.2%) responded, of which, 178 indicated that they had facial paralysis. Surgery for acoustic neuroma accounted for 80% of facial paralysis. Treatment received for facial palsy varied considerably, although 33% reported not receiving any treatment. The commonest single t

Effect of contralateral auditory stimuli on active cochlear micro-mechanical properties in human subjects.

The present study investigates the possibility that contralateral auditory stimulation along medial efferent system pathways may alter active cochlear micromechanics and hence affect evoked oto-acoustic emissions in humans. A first experiment, involving 21 healthy subjects showed reduction of oto-acoustic emission amplitude under low intensity contralateral white noise (from 30 dB SPL, 10 dB SL, upwards). The effect is found for intensities below the acoustic reflex threshold (85.2 dB HL). A second experiment, involving 10 of the above 21 subjects, sought to rule out any technical artefact. Re

Noise stimulation decreases the concentration of norepinephrine in the rat cochlea.

The present study was designed to analyze, by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the effect of acoustic stimulation on the cochlear concentration of norepinephrine (NE). Independently of the rat strain (Long-Evans or Wistar strains), NE concentration decreased about 18% when animals were exposed to white noise (90 dB SPL for 1 h). The same decrease was observed in animals perfused by aortic pathway to remove the blood, indicating that this decrease corresponds exclusively to a neurophysiological process. In fact, these findings could indicate that noise stimulation is involve…

[The normal value and clinical applications of the blink reflex].

OBJECTIVE: To study the normal value and clinical applications of blink reflex. METHODS: Using the clinical electrodiagnostic techniques, the orbital nerve was stimulated to elicit the blink reflex. RESULTS: In 20(40 sides) normal subjects, two components (R1 and R2) had been documented. The latencies were about 10.1 ms for R1, 30.4 ms and 30.7 ms separately for R2 and R2'. In 30 patients with trigeminal and facial nerve diseases and acoustic neuromas, the latencies on the affected sides were apparently longer or the reflex disappeared (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the s

Best Cochlear Locations for Delivering Interaural Timing Cues in Electric Hearing.

Growing numbers of children and adults who are deaf are eligible to receive cochlear implants (CI), which provide access to everyday sound. CIs in both ears (bilateral CIs or BiCIs) are becoming standard of care in many countries. However, their effectiveness is limited because they do not adequately restore the acoustic cues essential for sound localization, particularly interaural time differences (ITDs) at low frequencies. The cochlea, the auditory sensory organ, typically transmits ITDs more effectively at the apical region, which is specifically "tuned" to low frequencies. We hypothesized
