Repeated breath-holding has been shown to elicit transient increases in haemoglobin and erythropoietin concentrations, while long-term engagement in breath-hold-related activities has been linked with improved hypercapnic tolerance, mental resilience, and favourable cardiorespiratory, cerebrovascular, and skeletal muscle adaptations. Given these findings, breath-holding was proffered as a possible performance optimisation strategy a little over a decade ago. This prompted practitioners and researchers to explore its broader application either as a priming strategy completed immediately before

High-altitude environments present unique challenges for human physiology, particularly in Andean populations, where approximately 18 million people reside above 2,500 m in South America alone. These populations face not only the physiological stress of hypoxia but also socio-demographic challenges, including poverty, malnutrition, and limited access to protein-rich diets. Hypoxia at high altitudes, coupled with these socioeconomic factors, negatively impacts cognitive development, especially in children. The brain's high oxygen demand makes it particularly vulnerable to the effects of reduced

The seal louse (Echinophthirius horridus) is a remarkable example of evolutionary adaptation, thriving as an obligate ectoparasite on deep-diving marine mammals under extreme environmental conditions, including high hydrostatic pressure, extreme drag force, salinity, and fluctuating temperatures. To investigate the anatomical and functional specializations enabling this lifestyle, we compared the leg morphology and musculature of E. horridus with its terrestrial relative, the human head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), using synchrotron-based 3D microtomography and confocal laser scanning mi

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary adaptation drives organismal adjustments to environmental pressures, exemplified in the diverse morphological and ecological adaptations seen in Decapoda crustaceans, particularly brachyuran crabs. Crabs thrive in diverse ecosystems, from coral reefs to hydrothermal vents and terrestrial habitats. Despite their ecological importance, the genetic mechanisms underpinning their developmental processes, reproductive strategies, and nutrient acquisition remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: Here, we report a comprehensive genomic analysis of the green mud crab Scylla paramamo

The iconic sabretooth Homotherium is thought to have hunted cooperatively, but the origin of this behaviour and correlated morphological adaptations are largely unexplored. Here we report the most primitive species of Amphimachairodus (Amphimachairodus hezhengensis sp. nov.), a member of Machairodontini basal to Homotherium, from the Linxia Basin, northeastern border of the Tibetan Plateau (9.8-8.7 Ma). The long snout, laterally oriented and posteriorly located orbit of Amphimachairodus suggest a better ability to observe the surrounding environment, rather than targeting single prey, pointing

After a decline in interest in space missions following the cessation of the Apollo missions, there has been a recent resurgence. Activities on the International Space Station have raised awareness of a positive resumption of space travel to more challenging destinations such as Mars and a possible adaptation of human life on the Moon. The biological and physiological studies conducted on these stations in low Earth orbit are crucial in familiarizing humanity with the potential problems that can arise during long journeys. Cosmic rays and microgravity are the 2 main negative phenomena in space

Extreme environments are powerful drivers of physiological adaptation. Naked mole-rats offer an informative example of this relationship as they putatively encounter intermittent hypoxia and hypercapnia in their subterranean habitat. This has presumably driven the evolution of a suite of cellular and physiological adaptations that enable life in these conditions. Recently, my laboratory and others have begun to examine physiological responses to environmental hypoxia and hypercapnia in naked mole-rats, and the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms that differentiate the responses of thi

Birds exhibit wide variation in their use of aquatic environments, on a spectrum from entirely terrestrial, through amphibious, to highly aquatic. Although there are limited empirical data on hearing sensitivity of birds underwater, mounting evidence indicates that diving birds detect and respond to sound underwater, suggesting that some modifications of the ear may assist foraging or other behaviors below the surface. In air, the tympanic middle ear acts as an impedance matcher that increases sound pressure and decreases sound vibration velocity between the outside air and the inner ear. Unde

Hypoxia is one of the strongest environmental drivers of cellular and physiological adaptation. Although most mammals are largely intolerant of hypoxia, some specialized species have evolved mitigative strategies to tolerate hypoxic niches. Among the most hypoxia-tolerant mammals are naked mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber), a eusocial species of subterranean rodent native to eastern Africa. In hypoxia, naked mole-rats maintain consciousness and remain active despite a robust and rapid suppression of metabolic rate, which is mediated by numerous behavioural, physiological and cellular strategie

The plateau is a special environment with low air pressure and low oxygen content. The average altitude of Qinghai-Tibet is 3,500 m, and the atmospheric oxygen partial pressure in most areas is lower than 60% of that at sea level. In order to adapt to the plateau low-oxygen environment, the human body has developed corresponding physiological structure and functions adjust. In the present review, the regulation mechanism of cerebral blood flow (CBF) under high-altitude environments was elaborated in eight aspects: the arterial blood gas, endogenous substances in the nerve and blood, the cerebr

Evolution in response to a change in ecology often coincides with various morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits. For most organisms little is known about the genetic and functional relationship between evolutionarily derived traits, representing a critical gap in our understanding of adaptation. The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, consists of largely independent populations of fish that inhabit at least 30 caves in Northeast Mexico, and a surface fish population, that inhabit the rivers of Mexico and Southern Texas. The recent application of molecular genetic approaches combin

Molecular oxygen is often represented as a double-edged sword, essential to sustain oxidative phosphorylation that provides the bulk of the cell biological energy, yet toxic. In the current geological era, its proportion in the atmosphere happens to be 20.93%-20.95%, but in past eras, it fluctuated within the 0%-30% range, with different forms of life that could adapt successfully even by using alternative redox sources as hydrogen sulfide. Actually, humans may have lost the ability to adapt to oxygen levels departing consistently from 20.93% to 20.95%. Consequently, either hypoxia or hyperoxi

The extent to which species can adapt to spatiotemporal climatic variation in their native and introduced ranges remains unresolved. To address this, we examined how clines in cyanogenesis (hydrogen cyanide [HCN] production-an antiherbivore defense associated with decreased tolerance to freezing) have shifted in response to climatic variation in space and time over a 60-year period in both the native and introduced ranges of Trifolium repens. HCN production is a polymorphic trait controlled by variation at two Mendelian loci (Ac and Li). Using phenotypic assays, we estimated within-population

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of eccentric contraction execution time on the morphological and elastic properties of the patellar tendon (PT) in a six-week, single-leg decline squat (SLDS) exercise training program. In addition, the effects of a six-week detraining period on the same variables were evaluated. Fifty participants were randomized into the control group (CG; n = 15), experimental group 1 (EG6s; n = 17; eccentric contraction execution time = 6 s) and experimental group 2 (EG3s; n = 18; eccentric contraction execution time = 3 s). The thickness and elastographi

Yaks display unique properties of the lung and heart, enabling their adaptation to high-altitude environments, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still largely unknown. In the present study, the proteome differences in lung and heart tissues were compared between yak (Bos grunniens) and three cattle strains (Bos taurus, Holstein, Sanjiang and Tibetan cattle) using the sequential window acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra/data-independent acquisition (SWATH/DIA) proteomic method. In total, 51,755 peptides and 7215 proteins were identified. In the lung tissue, there were 162, 31

Naked mole-rats share some sensory characteristics with other subterraneans, including lack of object vision, retention of the ability to entrain their circadian rhythm to light, and poor hearing. On the other hand, a characteristic that may be specialized in the naked mole-rat is their exquisite orienting responses to the touch of even a single body vibrissa. They have about 100 whisker-like body vibrissae on their otherwise furless bodies. They are also insensitive to chemical and inflammatory pain, likely an adaptation to living in an atmosphere that is high in carbon dioxide, a result of m

Tics, often preceded by premonitory urges, are the clinical hallmark of Tourette syndrome. They resemble spontaneous movements, but are exaggerated, repetitive and appear misplaced in a given communication context. Given that tics often go unnoticed, it has been suggested that they represent a surplus of action, or motor noise. In this conceptual position paper, we propose that tics and urges, but also patterns of the cognitive profile in Tourette syndrome might be explained by the principle of processing of neural noise and adaptation to it during information processing. We review evidence fo

Many expressions of phenotype, such as physiological performance, integrate multiple underlying traits to function. Linking component traits to adaptive physiology thus gives insight into mechanisms of selection acting on performance. Genome size (C-value) is a trait that influences physiology in multiple taxa by exerting a nucleotypic effect, constraining cell size and cellular physiology such that whole-organism mass-specific metabolism is reduced with increasing C-value. We tested for this mechanism of C-value function acting in lungless salamanders, plus an unexplored potential mechanism o

Post-exercise microcurrent based treatments have shown to optimise exercise-induced adaptations in athletes. We compared the effects of endurance training in combination with either, a microcurrent or a sham treatment, on endurance performance. Additionally, changes in body composition, post-exercise lactate kinetics and perceived delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) were determined. Eighteen males (32.8 ± 6.3 years) completed an 8-week endurance training programme involving 5 to 6 workouts per week wearing a microcurrent (MIC, n=9) or a sham (SH, n=9) device for 3-h post-workout or in the
