Interventions for enhancing resilience in breast cancer patients: a realist review.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a growing global health issue. The treatment of breast cancer has a significant impact on women's health. Various efficacious interventions are available to enhance resilience. However, it remains unclear what mechanisms are triggered or if specific contexts favor the activation of different mechanisms. This review aims to comprehend how the different interventions lead to changes in resilience in breast cancer patients. METHOD: This study followed a realist review approach with an iterative design. First, the research scope was defined and an initial conceptual m

Correlates of post-traumatic growth among persons bereaved from cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent research identified that cancer bereavement can lead to post-traumatic growth (PTG). Although PTG and its correlates are well explored in cancer patients and survivors, persons bereaved from cancer have received scant attention. Therefore, the present review attempts to identify the correlates of PTG among persons bereaved from cancer. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, APA PsycNet, Science Direct, Scopus, and Wiley was conducted to identify quantitative studies published in English, resulting in 12 eligible reports being included in the final analysis.

Coping With Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome.

AIMS: Compensatory coping, or maladaptive alterations in behavior with the intention of preventing or managing symptoms, is increasingly being explored as a key factor in how people respond to bladder conditions. Preliminary investigations have identified relations between coping behaviors and psychological distress in urologic conditions, including interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). However, previous explorations of coping have not accounted for heterogeneity in coping behaviors or addressed the likelihood that some coping behaviors may be more adaptive than others. This st

Perceived Stressors and Support in Family Caregivers of Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder.

Stress experienced by family caregivers of individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) contributes to caregiver burden. To understand the stressors experienced by family caregivers of individuals with OUD and the factors that influence their personal resiliency, data were collected from a convenience sample of family caregivers who answered two open-ended questions about sources of stress and factors that affect their personal resilience as part of an online survey. Yin's thematic analysis revealed five objective and two subjective burden themes and four resilience themes. Results indicate OUD

Deconstructing resilience in patients at high risk for suicidal behavior.

BACKGROUND: Resilience represents coping abilities to overcome exposure to psychopathological risk. In the context of risk factors for suicidal behavior, it is unknown if this attribute is deficient in suicide attempters, how it relates to other measures of risk, and where it may overlap with other risk factors associated with suicidal behavior. METHODS: The present study examined the performance on the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) in three groups of individuals with familial risk for both mood disorder and suicidal behavior, as well as a healthy comparison group. Other risk fac

Posttraumatic Growth and Posttraumatic Depreciation: Associations with Core Beliefs and Rumination.

BACKGROUND: The positive transformation (i.e., posttraumatic growth, PTG) that can emerge after the struggles associated with a stressful life event has been widely investigated. However, less attention has been paid to the negative posttraumatic changes (i.e., posttraumatic depreciation, PTD) that might occur after a traumatic experience. This study aimed to investigate the role of a series of psychological factors (e.g., disruption of core beliefs, rumination, and depressive symptoms) in predicting PTG and PTD, separately considered. METHODS: To reach this goal, 601 participants who experie

Success of in vitro fertilization and its association with the levels of psychophysiological stress before and during the treatment.

Despite the advance of assisted reproduction, high rates of failure in treatment are still observed. Herein, we investigated how the psychophysiological stress profiles of patients can modulate the in vitro fertilization treatment (IVF) outcome. The women who had failure in IVF (n = 13; 65%) had higher baseline salivary cortisol awakening response and anxiety-state during treatment than patients who became pregnant (n = 7; 35%). Patients with major stress levels and religious coping style showed lower social support, which was correlated with higher anxiety. Therefore, we appointed stress modu

Pathways through homelessness among women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There has been a paradigm shift in understanding homelessness. The shift is from the belief that homelessness results from lack of secure housing towards the view which explains homelessness in terms of the complex interactions of factors which determine the pathways into and out of homelessness. The evidence base for women's homelessness is less robust than men's homelessness. The effect of gender and its relationship with homelessness has been neglected. Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, is estimated to be home for around 50,000 homeless people. This study aims to explor

Astrocyte-Derived Lactate Modulates the Passive Coping Response to Behavioral Challenge in Male Mice.

Every organism inevitably experiences stress. In the face of acute, intense stress, for example, periods of passivity occur when an organism's actions fail to overcome the challenge. The occurrence of inactive behavior may indicate that struggling would most likely be fruitless. Repeated serious stress has been associated with mood disorders such as depression. The modulation of passive coping response patterns has been explored with a focus on the circuit level. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms are largely uncharacterized. Here, we report that lactate is a key factor in the astr

Mastication as a Stress-Coping Behavior.

Exposure to chronic stress induces various physical and mental effects that may ultimately lead to disease. Stress-related disease has become a global health problem. Mastication (chewing) is an effective behavior for coping with stress, likely due to the alterations chewing causes in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system. Mastication under stressful conditions attenuates stress-induced increases in plasma corticosterone and catecholamines, as well as the expression of stress-related substances, such as neurotrophic factors and nitric oxide. Psychological responses and coping strategies among patients with malignant melanoma: a systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the literature to identify the prevalence of, and demonstrated risk factors for, psychological distress among individuals affected by, or at high risk of developing, melanoma. For a substantial subset of patients, the diagnosis and/or treatment of cutaneous malignant melanoma may cause significant psychological distress. DATA SOURCES: Using the MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases, published studies (1988 to March 2008) of individuals affected by melanoma were included if they examined the demographic, clinical, psychological, and/or social corr

A structural equation modeling approach to the study of stress and psychological adjustment in emerging adults.

Today's society puts constant demands on the time and resources of all individuals, with the resulting stress promoting a decline in psychological adjustment. Emerging adults are not exempt from this experience, with an alarming number reporting excessive levels of stress and stress-related problems. As a result, the present study addresses the need for a comprehensive model of emerging adult adjustment in the context of stress and coping variables and highlights the importance of accounting for differences between males and females in research concerning stress, social support, coping, and ad
