Rotary subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint is an uncommon complication of head and neck surgery and infections. Reported sequelae of this disorder range from torticollis to death from compression of the spinal cord. Two cases of C1-C2 rotary subluxation will be discussed. These complications occurred following otitis media, repair of choanal atresia, and an adenoidectomy. The literature is reviewed.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Tonsil-surgery is a common treatment for tonsillitis and upper-airway obstruction. Health benefits are a key point of clinical concern. Aim: To evaluate health benefits 6-months after pediatric tonsil-surgery and to examine the influence of the perioperative period on health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
METHOD: Participants, 198 children (4-17 years) who underwent tonsillectomy ± adenoidectomy on infection-related indications (TE ± A infec , n = 46), tonsillectomy ± adenoidectomy due to upper-airway-obstruction (TE ± A obstr , n = 44), or tonsillotomy ± adenoidectomy d…

Cohort A consisted of children solely undergoing TRA. Cohort B consisted of children on whom adenoidectomy and TRA had been performed. Additionally, a cohort of Spanish healthy controls, paired by sex and age, were asked to perform the U-Sniff.

BACKGROUND: This case demonstrates the critical importance of preoperative imaging in pediatric surgery after incidentally detecting a giant pulmonary bulla (3.6 cm) in a Han Chinese child scheduled for routine adenoidectomy. The novelty lies in managing conflicting pathologies-common adenoidal hypertrophy versus rare asymptomatic lung anomalies-requiring multidisciplinary risk-benefit evaluation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy Han Chinese 6-year-old boy was admitted for adenoidectomy using plasma radiofrequency ablation. Preoperative chest radiograph and computed tomography unexpect…

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common cause of upper airway obstruction, and adenoidectomy is one of the most frequently performed operations in children. Topical nasal steroids can act directly on nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissue to decrease its reactive inflammatory changes and potentially reduce its size.
OBJECTIVE: To study the light microscopic changes in adenoidal lymphoid tissue after one month of topical steroid use.
METHODS: Twenty-six children with adenoid hypertrophy grade 3 scheduled for adenoidectomy were randomly divided into two equal groups: one group received mometasone …

OBJECTIVE: To analyse peptidase activities in the removed tonsils and adenoids from patients with chronic tonsillitis, tonsillar hyperplasia and adenoid hyperplasia.
METHODS: We have analyzed 48 tissue samples from patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for chronic tonsillitis, tonsillar hyperplasia or adenoid hyperplasia. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy samples were collected and frozen for later enzyme analysis. The catalytic activity of a pool of peptidases (dipeptidyl peptidase IV, prolyl endopeptidase, aminopeptidase A, aminopeptidase N, aspartyl aminopeptidase, aminopeptida…

A six-year-old child with obstruction of the upper airway and a pectus excavatum defect ("funnel chest") is presented. Correction of the funnel-chest deformity was observed four years after the performance of a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy to relieve the obstruction of the upper airway. The relationship between chronic upper-airway obstruction and a pectus excavatum deformity is discussed, and the reversibility of such a deformity is documented.

More and more evidence is becoming available that throws doubt on the value of adenotonsillectomy in children with frequent throat infections or hypertrophic tonsils and adenoids. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy have a limited range of indications. Objective symptoms such as the size of the tonsils and subjective symptoms of obstruction and sore throat are not always related to each other. Children with only moderate symptoms should not be operated on.

Otitis media is a common childhood disease caused by multiple factors. Understanding the pathogenesis of otitis media is important in the diagnosis and management of it. The mode of therapy should be chosen depending on the type and stage of the disease. Treatment options available to an otolaryngologist include antibiotics, tympanocentesis, myringotomy and tympanostomy tube insertions, adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy, exploratory tympanotomy, atympanoplasty, and mastoidectomy.

We present the clinical case of a thirteen-year-old male patient who suffered a malignant hyperthermia syndrome after an adenoidectomy under general anaesthesia. The recovery of the patient was successful with the specific treatment of dantrolene. We believe it is interesting to publish all the cases of malignant hyperthermia in order to have a better knowledge of the real incidence in our country.

Evaluation of lymphocyte homeostasis within the chronically inflamed adenoid, closely related to the functioning of the immune system, may have a role in qualifying children for adenoidectomy. Apoptosis is a major process maintaining balance between tonsillar lymphocytes. The Fas receptor and Bcl-2 protein family which show pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic actions are of particular significance in apoptosis induction. Adenoid excised due to hypertrophy with or without chronic otitis media with effusion was used as study material. Flow cytometry was used to assess the percentages of apoptotic l…

INTRODUCTION: This paper, through the presentation of eight case reports and a limited literature review, attempts to illustrate the negative effect that upper airway obstruction can have on developing dental occlusion and the positive effect that upper airway relief can have on the 'normalization' of various malocclusion patterns believed to be related to chronic obligate mouth breathing.
OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of airway relief (usually through tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy) on various patterns of dental malocclusion.
METHODS: Children coming to the office of the lead author (D…

4 patients with enlarged tonsils and adenoids associated with pectus excavatum are presented. 2 also had signs of pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure. All 4 underwent adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy. Respiratory distress and congestive heart failure were rapidly relieved, while the pectus deformity improved gradually and completely disappeared in 6 months to 2 years after surgery.

We present a case of postoperative Nasopore aspiration in an otherwise fit and well 11-year-old. An endoscopic adenoidectomy had been performed without incident and Nasopore packing placed into each nasal cavity. Immediately after extubation, there was marked hypoxia, tachypnoea and high clinical suspicion of pack aspiration. The patient returned to theatre for emergency rigid bronchoscopy and retrieval of nasal packing.

Nasal obstruction caused by adenoid hypertrophy can lead to malocclusion. The research material consisted of children aged 7-12 years with adenoid hypertrophy qualified for adenoidectomy. On the basis of the conducted tests (laryngological, orthodontic, pediatric), the occurrence of open frontal bite in children with pharyngeal tonsil hypertrophy, in particular in boys, was confirmed in comparison to children without hypertrophy correctly breathing through the nose.
