Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma with lymph node metastasis.

We report on a case of primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma with local recurrence and lymph node metastasis. The patient was a 52-year-old Japanese woman. The initial cutaneous lesion was a skin-colored, centrally elevated, thumb-sized nodule with hair loss on the scalp in the right side of the parietal region. Three and half years after the initial combined treatment consisting of surgery and irradiation, a recurrent nodule on the left side of the parietal region of the scalp and a lymph node metastasis with perinodal tissue involvement in the left retroauricular area were discovered. [Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx. A case report and review of the literature].

Laryngeal adenoïd cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare disease due to the poor distribution of the accessory salivary glands in this area. The authors describe a case of ACC arising from the sus glottic area and underline the difficulty of such a diagnosis, which is in fact an histologic finding. The signs of discovery of a laryngeal ACC are not different from other tumors of the area, except pain frequently evoked in these tumors. Laryngeal ACC arises exceptionally before the age of 20 years and no risk factor is known. The most frequent localization is in the sub-glottic area, but sus glottic an

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland with symptomatic ovarian metastases.

We report the clinical and pathologic features of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland that metastasized to the ovaries 10 years after initial presentation. A 30-year-old woman underwent excision of a right submandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma followed by regional external beam radiation therapy. Three years later, she underwent extended hepatic resection and localized radiotherapy to the hepatic region for metastatic disease. The patient was without evidence of disease for 7 years when she developed pelvic pain and a pelvic mass was found. A solid and cystic 10-cm left ova

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal sac: report of a case.

A 41-year-old white woman presented with a 1-month history of epiphora and a painless medial canthal mass on the left that was unresponsive to antibiotic treatment. Computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans delineated a soft tissue mass with bony destruction originating in the area of the left lacrimal sac with extension into the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses and inferomedial orbit. Open biopsy of the mass revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). On surgical exploration, the tumor was found to originate from the lacrimal sac wall. Radical surgery with wide excisio

[Adenoid cystic sweat gland carcinoma. A clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study].

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin is one of the rarest sweat gland tumours. We have studied two cases of adenoid cystic sweat gland carcinoma clinically, histologically and immunohistochemically. One tumour was located on the occiput of an 18-year-old male patient, while the other developed on the back of a 49-year-old woman. Histologically, both carcinomas were characterized by basaloid tumour cells showing the typical adenoid-cystic growth pattern. The cells were arranged in solid, cribriform, tubular and cystic aggregates, which were surrounded by mucoid, Alcian blue material. Immunohist

[Combined small cell and "adenoid cystic" carcinoma of the uterine cervix].

Cervical carcinoma in a 49-year-old woman was resected and found to spread into parametrium. It consisted of a unique combination of adenoid cystic, squamous and small cell neuroendocrine structures. Small celled part revealed positivity with chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase, neuroendocrine granules were argyrophilic and about 130 nm in diameter. Adenoid cystic and squamous parts were lacking of unambiguous neuroendocrine or myoepithelial differentiation. The patient died in 27 months due to generalization but only a small cell carcinoma without any heterogeneity was found in autopsy

Histamine secretion from human mesenteric and adenoidal mast cells.

Human mast cells were obtained from adenoids and mesentery by enzymatic dispersion of the tissues with the enzyme collagenase. The digestion of the tissues resulted in a cell suspension which contained 1-2% mast cells. 37.3% (adenoids) and 33.4% (mesentery) of total histamine initially present in the tissues was recovered in the dispersed cell suspensions. More than 90% of the cells were viable. The adenoidal mast cells could be sensitized passively in vitro with homologous reaginic serum and released histamine after challenge with specific antigen. Both populations of mast cells were sensitiv…

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast. Value of immunohistochemical study in diagnosis.

An immunohistochemical study of 5 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast was performed with antibodies against keratin, EMA, vimentin, S-100 protein, alpha-smooth muscle actin and collagen IV. Results show the following: 1) ACC may be diagnosed and differentiated from ductal carcinoma (invasive or in situ). The key to diagnosis is positivity within tumor masses of alpha-smooth muscle actin, a specific marker for myoepithelial cells. Actin-rich cells are not generally observed in ductal carcinomas, except at the periphery of a few invaded ducts, corresponding to a residual myoepi

[A case of pulmonary metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea].

A 33-year-old woman with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea was treated by resection of the upper and mid-trachea, plus total laryngectomy, subtotal thyroidectomy, partial resection of the cervical esophageal muscle layer and mediastinal tracheostomy. This tumor invaded directly into the thyroid gland, the larynx, the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the cervical esophagus. Three years after the operation, metastases developed in the right lung (S10, S2) and partial resection of the lung was performed. This patient is now free from disease. Aggressive surgical resection is important for the

Respiratory disturbance during sleep due to adenoid-tonsillar hypertrophy.

The pathophysiologic results of respiratory disturbances caused by adenoid-tonsillar hypertrophy are reported. In each case, we monitored intraesophageal pressure to accurately assess respiratory effort, and recorded a sleep diary to detect disorganized sleep habits and disturbed sleeping-waking rhythms. We noticed that great respiratory effort existed not only during light sleep, but was also continuously observed during deep sleep despite the total disappearance of obstructive apneas. Furthermore, upper airway obstruction caused by adenoid-tonsillar hypertrophy and hypoxemia during sleep in

Adenoid-cystic carcinoma (cylindroma) of the pyriform sinus in pediatric age.

Adenoid cystic tumors or cylindromas are malignant tumors typical of salivary tissue which often develop in minor salivary glands and, according to some authors, also in common mucosa glands. In these cases such tumors are particularly malignant owing to the frequency in which they re-occur locally and develop distant metastases. The authors report a case of a cylindroma of the pyriform sinus in a young child. An accurate review of the literature did not reveal any previous reports of analogous cases of cylindroma in the pyriform sinus of such a young subject. This finding created notably diff

The role of radiotherapy in the management of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck.

Sixty-eight patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck treated by radiation with or without surgery were reviewed. The tumors were located in the major salivary glands in 15 patients and in the minor glands of various sites, mostly in the palate and/or upper gum, in 53. The local control rate was naturally better in the patients with elective postoperative radiation and those with recurrent disease who underwent radiation after repeated surgery for the purpose of tumor reduction than in patients with residual and/or inoperable tumors. For localized tumors in the oral cav

Late-recurring calcifying adenoid cystic carcinoma. Report of a case.

A recurring adenocystic carcinoma originating in the floor of the maxillary antrum in a 75-year-old man is described. The primary tumour had been surgically removed from the mucous membrane of the hard palate 22 years earlier. Histological examination showed deposits of calcification in the tumour tissue. The authors believe this feature to be a sign of the slow-growing variant of adenocystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: A rare manifestation of a rare malignancy.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignancy most commonly arising from the salivary glands. It less frequently manifests in other glandular tissues, including the breast, lacrimal glands, and the trachea. ACC is characterized by slow growth, yet exhibits locally aggressive behavior and propensity for late recurrence. Despite its local aggressiveness, the overall prognosis for primary breast manifestations of ACC is generally favorable. Mammographic and sonographic appearances often demonstrate an indistinctly marginated mass of variable shape and size. MRI findings are similarly variab

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea: an uncommon presentation of a rare malignancy.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare salivary gland tumor characterized by an indolent yet aggressive course, facilitated by perineural invasion, a propensity for delayed distant metastases, and recurrence after resection. A 61-year-old female presented with a three-month history of intermittent hoarseness and resting dysphagia. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a subglottic mass with proximal tracheal invasion, and ultrasound-guided neck fine-needle aspiration cytology was consistent with ACC. Surgical management included total laryngectomy with proximal tracheal and left

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the thymus: a case report and literature review.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the thymus is extremely rare. Although thymic ACC is generally slow growing, complete surgical resection is essential due to its tendency for local invasion. Here, we report a case of primary thymic ACC successfully treated by complete resection using a single-port subxiphoid thoracoscopic approach. A 63-year-old asymptomatic male patient was referred after an anterior mediastinal mass was incidentally detected during a routine health screening. Imaging revealed a small, well-circumscribed tumor without evidence of invasion. At 2.2 cm, the lesion was a

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Male Breast: An Exceptionally Rare Presentation.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is an exceedingly rare malignancy, accounting for less than 0.1% of all breast cancers. It typically affects postmenopausal women and is exceptionally uncommon in men, with fewer than 20 cases reported in the literature. Histologically, ACC is a biphasic tumor composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells with distinct cribriform, tubular, and solid-basaloid subtypes. Awareness of this condition in men is essential to prevent misdiagnosis and guide appropriate management. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 40-year-old man who p
