BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of Caesarean Section (CS) has significantly risen from 7% in 1990 to 21% in 2018, rising suspicion of unnecessary use of caesarean section based on WHO recommendations. In Rwanda, CS rates have significantly increased from 2.2% in 2000 to 15.6% in 2020, with nearly half of maternal deaths reported to be associated with caesarean deliveries. However, predictors of maternal complications of CS have not yet been studied in large scale, therefore, this study aimed to determine the risk factors associated with maternal complication of CS in Rwanda. METHODS: A retro

BACKGROUND: Early miscarriage, a common pregnancy complication predominantly occurring before 12 weeks, is conclusively linked to embryonic chromosomal abnormalities. Given the rising proportion of pregnancies at advanced maternal age, a contemporary re-examination of the relationships among early miscarriage, sex chromosomal anomalies, and maternal age is imperative to optimize clinical counseling strategies. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed cases from the Medical Genetics and Prenatal Diagnosis Center at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University (July 2022–December 2024…

Women of advanced age exhibit significant heterogeneity in ovarian reserve, categorized as normal (NOR) or diminished (DOR). This study aims to distinguish physiological age-related decline from pathological accelerated aging in DOR, and to explore underlying molecular mechanisms for optimizing assisted reproductive strategies. In vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) outcomes were retrospectively compared in advanced-age women (≥ 40 years) with NOR or DOR treated at our center (January 2022 - December 2024). Simultaneously, follicular fluid (FF) was collected from both groups (n = 20).

OBJECTIVES: The objective is to evaluate maternal and fetal outcomes at an extremely advanced maternal age (AMA) (over age 50 years) in Calgary. The secondary objective is to determine if there is a role in protocolizing complex care plans for patients at extreme AMAs.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of all pregnancies ≥20 weeks gestation in patients over the age of 50 years that delivered in Calgary between January 2007 and December 2021. Pregnancy data were collected, including maternal age, pre-existing medical conditions, mode and timing of delivery, neonatal outcomes,…

Excessive accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the body has been associated with many adverse health conditions. The common point of the pathologies associated at this point is oxidative stress and inflammation. Pregnancy is an important period in which many physiological, psychological, and biological changes are experienced. Along with the physiological changes that occur during this period, the mother maintaining an AGE-rich diet may cause an increase in the body's AGE pool and may increase oxidative stress and inflammation, as seen in healthy individuals. Studies have

Mammalian reproductive performance declines rapidly with advanced maternal age. This effect is largely attributed to the exponential increase in chromosome segregation errors in the oocyte with age. Yet many pregnancy complications and birth defects that become more frequent in older mothers, in both humans and mice, occur in the absence of karyotypic abnormalities. Here, we report that abnormal embryonic development in aged female mice is associated with severe placentation defects, which result from major deficits in the decidualisation response of the uterine stroma. This problem is rooted …

Down's syndrome is the most common autosomal aberration and single cause of mental retardation in man. There is a close relation between advanced maternal age and Down's syndrome. The limitation of family size has made a considerable impact on the incidence of Down's syndrome. In Denmark in the 1950s, 50% of Down's syndrome cases were born to mothers over the age of 35. The percentage went down to 25% in the 1970s and was reduced by prenatal diagnosis to 8% in the 1980s. For the period 1980-85 we followed the birth prevalence closely for different maternal age groups. The birth prevalence was …

BACKGROUND: Advanced paternal age at birth has been linked to several psychiatric disorders in offspring (e.g. schizophrenia) and genetic mechanisms are thought to underlie these associations. This study is the first to investigate whether advanced paternal age at birth is associated with eating disorder risk using a twin study design capable of examining both phenotypic and genetic associations.
METHOD: In a large, population-based sample of female twins aged 8-17 years in mid-puberty or beyond (n = 1722), we investigated whether advanced paternal age was positively associated with disordere

In common usage, a low maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) value is associated with an increased risk of Down syndrome. We have performed amniocenteses for the indication of age-adjusted low MSAFP in 1154 patients and found 13 chromosomally abnormal conceptions. Autosomal trisomies were detected in half the cases. Additional abnormalities included sex-chromosome aberrations, deletions, or triploidy in proportions consistent with those seen in an advanced-maternal-age population. Patients with low serum AFP should be counseled that not only Down syndrome, but other aneuploidies as well, ma

Three thousand four hundred thirteen consecutive deliveries at a rural hospital in Zaire are examined. 85% of patients had goiters and 5% were cretins. Twenty maternal deaths occurred, or 5.9 per 1000 deliveries. Risk factors for maternal death included late presentation, advanced age (greater than or equal to 35 years), no education and presence of goiter or cretinism. Ninety percent of women who died were in critical condition at admission, 45% had labored greater than or equal to 48 h and 70% had uterine rupture.

Chromosomal aneuploidy is one of the major causes of pregnancy wastage. In this review we summarize the knowledge about the origin and mecha … ination associated with maternal meiotic non-disjunction in all trisomies studied in detail so far. Advanced maternal age remains the only well documented risk factor for maternal meiotic non-disjunction, but there is, however, still a surprising lack of understanding of the basic mechanism(s) behind the maternal age effect.

To study the effect of maternal age on primary cesarean section rates, 3458 consecutive deliveries were analyzed. The cesarean section rates in primiparous women less than 25, 25 to 34, and over 34 years of age were 13.1%, 18.5%, and 28.2%, respectively. A similarly dramatic rise with advancing maternal age was seen in multiparous women with rates of 3.4%, 4.7%, and 10.1%, respectively, in the three age groups. The strong association between cesarean section and maternal age persisted after multivariate adjustment for induction of labor, epidural anesthesia, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, an

Amniocentesis for advanced maternal age resulted in the demonstration of a supernumerary microchromosome in the amniotic fluid cells. Cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood from the female infant revealed a mosaic karyotype 46,XX/47,XX, + marker. The only anomaly noted in the infant was talipes equinovarus.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the association between maternal age, paternal age, and parental age difference at the time of birth and the risk of epilepsy in the offspring.
METHODS: We carried out a prospective population-based register study of all singletons born in Denmark between 1981 and 2012. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) of epilepsy and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusted for relevant confounders.
RESULTS: We followed 1 587 897 individuals for a total of ~25 million person-years and identified 21 797 persons with epilepsy dur

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy- associated melanoma (PAM) is reported between 2.8 and 5.0 per 100,000 pregnancies and approximately 35% of women with melanoma are of childbearing age. The diagnosis and treatment of melanoma during pregnancy needs a balance of risks and benefits for both maternal and fetal well-being. It is a type of malignancy, which requires a multidisciplinary approach, not limited to the obstetrician, but also to oncologists, neonatologists, pharmacists and psychologists.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a case of a 36-year-old pregnant woman, who was admitted to our 3rd level Un
