How Mental Health Interviews Conducted Alone, in the Presence of an Adult, a Child or Both Affects Adolescents' Reporting of Psychological Symptoms and Risky Behaviors.

The normative process of autonomy development in adolescence involves changes in adolescents' information management typically characterized by decreasing disclosure and increasing concealment. These changes may have an important impact on the early detection and timely treatment of mental health conditions and risky behavior. Therefore, the objective was to extend our understanding of how these developmental changes in adolescent disclosure might impact adolescent mental health interviews. Specifically, we estimated the effects of third party presence and type of third party presence (adult,

Smoking to Regulate Negative Affect: Disentangling the Relationship Between Posttraumatic Stress and Emotional Disorder Symptoms, Nicotine Dependence, and Cessation-Related Problems.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with various aspects of cigarette smoking, including higher levels of nicotine dependence and cessation difficulties. Affect-regulatory smoking motives are thought to, in part, underlie the association between emotional disorders such as PTSD and smoking maintenance, although few studies have empirically tested this possibility. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 135 treatment-seeking smokers who were directly exposed to the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001. We modeled the direct effect of 9/11 PTSD symptom severi

Therapeutic assessment promotes treatment readiness but does not affect symptom change in patients with personality disorders: findings from a randomized clinical trial.

The field of clinical personality assessment is lacking in published empirical evidence regarding its treatment and clinical utility. This article reports on a randomized controlled clinical trial (N = 74) allocating patients awaiting treatment in a specialized clinic for personality disorders to either 4 sessions of (a) therapeutic assessment (TA) or (b) a structured goal-focused pretreatment intervention (GFPTI). In terms of short-term outcome, TA demonstrated superior ability to raise outcome expectancies and patient perceptions of progress toward treatment (Cohen's d = 0.65 and 0.56, respe

Slow-Paced Breathing Intervention in Healthcare Workers Affected by Long COVID: Effects on Systemic and Dysfunctional Breathing Symptoms, Manual Dexterity and HRV.

BACKGROUND: Many COVID-19 survivors still experience long-term effects of an acute infection, most often characterised by neurological, cognitive and psychiatric sequelae. The treatment of this condition is challenging, and many hypotheses have been proposed. Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation using slow-paced breathing (SPB) could stimulate both central nervous system areas and parasympathetic autonomic pathways, leading to neuromodulation and a reduction in inflammation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate physical, cognitive, emotional symptoms, executive functions and autonomic

Knowledge and Misinformation About Breast Cancer Risk Factors, Symptoms, and Prevention Among Healthy and Affected Women: A Study on 2375 Italian Participants.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and remains the leading cause of death among Italian women. Despite increased breast cancer awareness and improved diagnostic techniques, mortality rates remain high globally. In Italy, despite the availability of screening programs by the National Health System (NHS) for all Italian women aged 50-69 every two years, the participation rate remains relatively low. The low uptake of screening may be attributed to a lack of general cancer knowledge among women, including awareness of risk factors, symptoms, and prevention m

Symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccine status of sixty-seven adult patients affected by inherited metabolic diseases: a phone survey.

BACKGROUND: The Covid pandemic seems to have had several detrimental effects on managing patients affected by inherited metabolic diseases (IMD), although published data about the impact of COVID-19 on patients suffering from IMD are very scarce. The scope of our work was to evaluate adherence to the vaccination plan, the side effects experienced by our adult IMD patients, and the symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 infection. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients agreed to respond to a phone interview. The mean age was 36.5 (± 11.6 SD). Regarding the vaccination campaign, fifty-five patients (82%) joined it,

Do Gastrointestinal Symptoms Affect the Endoscopic Outcome in Anemic Premenopausal Women Due to Iron Deficiency: A Multicenter Study From Basrah-Iraq.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The most common cause for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in women before menopause is menstrual blood loss. The persistence of digestive symptoms despite iron supplementation is the only indication for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy in premenopausal women (PW) with IDA. We evaluated how the GI symptomatology manifestation affects the GI endoscopy diagnostic outcome in this cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an observational, multicenter retrospective evaluation of 245 PW admitted for GI endoscopic diagnosis for the etiology of IDA from 2006 to 2016. Baseline meas

A narrative synthesis of factors that affect women speaking up about early warning signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia and responses of healthcare staff.

BACKGROUND: One of the challenges for treating pre-eclampsia and preventing further deterioration is determining how best to enable early detection. If women or their partners and families are able to raise early warnings about potential signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period, women may be able to receive earlier intervention to prevent severe pre-eclampsia from developing. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of factors affecting the ability of women to recognise symptoms and signs of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and seek appropriate medic

Preoperative Factors Affecting Postoperative Axial Symptoms After Single-Door Cervical Laminoplasty for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: A Prospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND Postoperative axial symptoms (post-AS) after single-door cervical laminoplasty for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) are a common and severe complication that adversely affects normal daily activities. Their etiology remains unclear. It is important to know which preoperative factors are the most predictive of post-AS. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the preoperative factors affecting post-AS. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 102 patients with CSM who underwent single-door cervical laminoplasty between 2009 and 2015 were studied. According to operation date, patients wer

Childhood trauma and social support affect symptom profiles through cortical thickness abnormalities in major depressive disorder: A structural equation modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma, low social support, and alexithymia are recognized as risk factors for major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the mechanisms of risk factors, symptoms, and corresponding structural brain abnormalities in MDD are not fully understood. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has advantages in studying multivariate interrelationships. We aim to illustrate their relationships using SEM. METHODS: 313 MDD patients (213 female; mean age 42.49 years) underwent magnetic resonance imaging and completed assessments. We integrated childhood trauma, alexithymia, social support,

Receptor-interacting protein kinase-1 ablation in liver parenchymal cells promotes liver fibrosis in murine NASH without affecting other symptoms.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a chronic liver disease that emerged in industrialized countries, can further progress into liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the next decade, NASH is predicted to become the leading cause of liver transplantation, the only current interventional therapeutic option. Hepatocyte death, triggered by different death ligands, plays key role in its progression. Previously, we showed that the receptor-interacting protein kinase-1 (RIPK1) in hepatocytes exhibits a protective role in ligand-induced death. Now, to decipher the role of RIPK1
