Patulous nasolacrimal duct with air reflux: a complication of submucosal diathermy of the inferior turbinate.

BACKGROUND: Submucosal diathermy to the inferior turbinate is a widely practised procedure to improve the nasal airway when nasal obstruction is due to hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate. This paper reports a case of an unusual nasolacrimal complication following submucosal diathermy to the inferior turbinate, and reviews the relevant literature.Case reportA 33-year-old male patient developed a patulous nasolacrimal duct opening following submucosal diathermy of the inferior turbinate. This resulted in spontaneous reflux of air and nasal mucus on to the ocular surface. CONCLUSION: This new

Release of hydrogen sulfide under intermittent flow conditions - the potential of simulation models.

For engineering purposes it is especially useful to be able to predict and control sewer corrosion rates and odor impacts as well as to design effective measures aiming to reduce effects related to hydrogen sulfide formation and release. Doing so, it is important to use modeling tools that are capable of assessing variations of dissolved oxygen, dissolved sulfide and hydrogen sulfide gas concentrations for a wide range of environmental scenarios. Two such models were assessed: AEROSEPT, an empirical formulation, and WATS, a conceptual and more complex approach. The models were applied to evalu

Effects of drafting on energy expenditure in in-line skating.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of drafting on energy expenditure in in-line skating, and to investigate whether the "benefit of drafting", i.e. the decrease in energy expenditure, was different between two velocities and two distances separating the two skaters. METHODS: Eight recreational in-line skaters performed six exercises of 6 min, at 2 velocities (V(1) = 5.51+/-0.45 m x sec(-1); V(2) = 7.01+/-0.67 m x sec(-1)) in 3 conditions (ND = without drafting; D(1)=0.74-0.87 m "close"; D(2) = 1.19-1.36 m "far"). Collection of expired gas was carried out using a breath-

Microclimatic conditions and their effects on sheep behavior during a live export shipment from Australia to the Middle East.

The microclimate can potentially impact the health and welfare of livestock exported by ship. Within-pen microclimatic conditions were recorded and the effects of ammonia on sheep behavior investigated on a voyage from Australia to the Middle East. Ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide as well as wet-bulb, dry-bulb, and dew-point temperature and air speed were mapped in 20 open-deck focal pens, with the focus on the behavior and location of a marked sheep in each pen. Air speed was highly variable in most pens, with pockets of high but transient concentrations of ammonia (30.7 to 44.2

Energy evolution mechanism of hard roof of working face adjacent to goaf after hydraulic fracturing and application.

To solve the unclear energy evolution mechanism and uncertain fracturing effects in hydraulic fracturing of coal seams adjacent to goafs, this study explored hydraulic fracturing's influence on roof energy release via theoretical analysis, proposed the optimal fracturing location to mitigate inter-roof energy transfer, and clarified fractures' regulatory effects on key strata through particle flow numerical simulation. Combined with field tests, it revealed the fractured roof energy evolution law: key stratum movement triggers energy release, and hydraulic fracturing promotes the phased subsid

Demonstration of airborne transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 2 between simulated pig units located at close range.

Airborne transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae was studied as the percentage of air needed to establish airborne transmission from an infected pig unit into a neighbouring non-infected pig unit. The experiment was carried out in two containers constructed as pig units, placed 1m apart and connected by pipes. By manipulating the air pressure in the two units, the amount of ventilation air transferred from the infected pigs (unit A) to the non-infected pigs (unit B) was controlled and measured. In three experiments, between 48 and 50 specific pathogen free-pigs were randomly assigned t

A "Catlike Cry" as a Symptom of Congenital Tracheoesophageal Fistula.

Congenital tracheoesophageal fistula is usually diagnosed at an early age, but may remain undetected into adulthood if atresia is absent and if the fistula is small. A tracheoesophageal fistula should be suspected in patients with unexplained episodes of respiratory distress or pneumonia; however, more subtle signs can be an important symptom for early recognition of the disease. Ono's sign is a well-known symptom of tracheoesophageal fistula, characterized by paroxysmal coughing triggered by swallowing of fluids. In the present case, air movement between the esophagus and the trachea through

Quantification and Comparison of Risks Associated with Wastewater Use in Spray Irrigation.

In the U.S., spray irrigation is the most common method used in agriculture and supplementing with animal wastewater has the potential to reduce water demands. However, this could expose individuals to respiratory pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila and nontuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM). Disinfection with methods like anaerobic digestion is an option but can increase concentrations of cytotoxic ammonia (personal communication). Our study aimed to model the annual risks of infection from these bacterial pathogens and the air concentrations of ammonia and determine if anaerobically digesti

Increased ozone pollution alongside reduced nitrogen dioxide concentrations during Vienna's first COVID-19 lockdown: Significance for air quality management.

BACKGROUND: Lockdowns amid the COVID-19 pandemic have offered a real-world opportunity to better understand air quality responses to previously unseen anthropogenic emission reductions. METHODS AND MAIN OBJECTIVE: This work examines the impact of Vienna's first lockdown on ground-level concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3) and total oxidant (Ox). The analysis runs over January to September 2020 and considers business as usual scenarios created with machine learning models to provide a baseline for robustly diagnosing lockdown-related air quality changes. Models were also develo

Ascites in poultry.

Research on ascites occurring in meat-type chickens reared at moderate and low altitude has shown that the pathogenesis is similar to that of the high altitude disease. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by increased blood flow or increased resistance to flow in the lung results in right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH), valvular insufficiency, increased venous pressure and ascites. The structure of the avian heart, with its thin-walled right ventricle and muscular right atrioventricular valve, allows PH to induce heart failure quickly. The sudden increase in pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS)

Locomotory Behavior of Water Striders with Amputated Legs.

The stability of the body during locomotion is a fundamental requirement for walking animals. The mechanisms that coordinate leg movement patterns are even more complex at water-air interfaces. Water striders are agile creatures on the water surface, but they can be vulnerable to leg damage, which can impair their movement. One can assume the presence of certain compensatory biomechanical factors that are involved in the maintenance of postural balance lost after an amputation. Here, we studied changes in load distribution among the legs and assessed the effects of amputation on the locomotory

Sleep and aging: 2. Management of sleep disorders in older people.

The treatment of sleep-related illness in older patients must be undertaken with an appreciation of the physiologic changes associated with aging. Insomnia is common among older people. When it occurs secondary to another medical condition, treatment of the underlying disorder is imperative. Benzodiazepines, although potentially effective, must be used with care and in conservative doses. Daytime sedation, a common side effect, may limit use of benzodiazepines. Newer non-benzodiazepine drugs appear to be promising. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder can be treated with clonazepa

Indirect synaptic inputs from filiform hair sensory neurons contribute to the receptive fields of giant interneurons in the first-instar cockroach.

The first-instar cockroach, Periplaneta americana, detects air movements using four filiform hair sensilla, which make synaptic connections to seven pairs of giant interneurons (GIs) in the terminal abdominal ganglion. The directional sensitivities of some of the GIs, predicted from their patterns of monosynaptic inputs, may not be the same as in the second instar or adult. Intracellular recordings were made to determine the contribution of polysynaptic inputs to the receptive fields of first-instar GIs. The ventral GI1, and the dorsal GI5, GI6, and GI7 were all found to have indirect synaptic…

Underwater Bionic Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Coating with the Synergetic Effect Of Hydrogen Bonds and Self-Formed Bubbles.

The self-healing ability of superhydrophobic surfaces in air has attracted tremendous additions in recent years. Once the superhydrophobic surface is damaged underwater, water seeps into gaps among micro/nano structures. The air film diffuses into water and eventually disappears during immersion without actively replenishing the gas, which results in the impossible of self-healing. Here, an underwater self-healing superhydrophobic coating with the synergetic effect of hydrogen bonds and self-formed bubbles via the spraying method is fabricated. The movement of hydrogen bonds of the prepared po

[Carbon monoxide contamination: an environmental health problem].

Carbon monoxide is considered to be a major factor contaminating earth's atmosphere. The main sources producing this contamination are cars using gasoline or diesel fuel and industrial processes using carbon compounds; these two are responsible for 80% of carbon monoxide being emitted to the atmosphere. This substance has a well-known toxic effect on human beings and its acute poisonous effects (including death) have been widely studied; however, its long-term chronic effects are still not known. During the last few years, experimental research on animals and studies of human epidemiology have

Dynamic Computed Tomography for detecting pulmonary cysts in canine Paragonimiasis: a case report.

An 11-year-old male French bulldog presented with incidental cystic lesions by the pulmonary CT. CT revealed two cysts in the right caudal lobe of the lung that were suspicious for emphysematous lesions. These cysts were divided into an air layer and a soft tissue-like layer. Dynamic computed tomography (DCT) of cysts revealed undulating motion in the soft tissue-like layer. The dog's rearing environment included brackish water, and it was evident that the dog had been eating brackish water crabs from the river. The dog was diagnosed with paragonimiasis. This DCT imaging revealed movement of l

Bioinspired Concept Reinforced Superhydrophobic Textile-Based Strain Sensor with Stable Human Motion Monitoring in Air and Water.

Conventional textile-based strain sensors suffer from critical limitations in moisture-rich or aquatic environments due to their inherent hydrophilicity and weak interfacial adhesion between functional coatings and fibers, which severely restrict their practical application for human motion monitoring in amphibious scenarios. Herein, we proposed a bioinspired concept reinforced superhydrophobic textile (BCRST)-based strain sensor via a combined dipping-spraying technique, which integrated a biomimetic copolymer (HE-co-SV) as an adhesive bridge between a superelastic textile substrate and a flu

Loss of cerebellar function selectively affects intrinsic rhythmicity of eupneic breathing.

Respiration is controlled by central pattern generating circuits in the brain stem, whose activity can be modulated by inputs from other brain areas to adapt respiration to autonomic and behavioral demands. The cerebellum is known to be part of the neuronal circuitry activated during respiratory challenges, such as hunger for air, but has not been found to be involved in the control of spontaneous, unobstructed breathing (eupnea). Here we applied a measure of intrinsic rhythmicity, the CV2, which evaluates the similarity of subsequent intervals and is thus sensitive to changes in rhythmicity a
