Prevalence of Clostridioides difficile in hospitalized neonatal mare-foal pairs from Alberta and direct comparison of fecal culture with toxin gene detection.

Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile is an important pathogen in the feces of adult horses and foals. It can be clinically diagnosed using several testing methods, including culture isolation and, more commonly, direct toxin gene detection from feces using molecular methods. The importance of monitoring C. difficile shedding in foals or dams during hospitalization remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of C. difficile fecal shedding in mare-foal pairs and to compare detection using isolation and a commercial real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) f

Overall and late mortality among 24 459 survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer in Alberta, Canada: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors are at an increased risk of premature mortality due to their cancer and its treatment. Herein, we aimed to quantify the excess risks of mortality among AYA cancer survivors and identify target populations for intervention. METHODS: The Alberta AYA Cancer Survivor Study is a retrospective, population-based cohort of individuals diagnosed with a first primary neoplasm at age 15-39 years in Alberta, Canada, between 1983 and 2017. We assessed cancer survivors (ie, all individuals included in the cohort) overall and for 2-year and 5-yea…

Osteohistological analysis of metatarsals reveals new information on pathology and life history of troodontids from the Campanian Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta, Canada.

Troodontidae is a family of small-bodied theropods known predominantly from Asia but are comparatively scarce in North America. In the Dinosaur Park Formation (DPF) of Alberta, Canada, they are known predominantly from isolated material, precluding taxonomic and ontogenetic precision for this clade. Previously never sampled histologically within the DPF, here we attempt to fill in gaps in our knowledge about the life histories of the clade in this formation by histologically surveying metatarsals, which are among the most abundant and identifiable troodontid elements in the DPF. We sampled 11 …

Serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibilities of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae pre- and post-seven valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction in Alberta, Canada, 2000-2006.

Alberta, Canada introduced the Streptococcus pneumoniae seven valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) program for children less than 2 years of age in September 2002. We determined the rates of invasive pneumococcal disease in Alberta, Canada 2 years pre- and 4 years post-PCV7 introduction (2000-2006) as well as the rates of antibiotic resistance and serotype distribution in this same time period. Overall, PCV7 serotypes decreased 61% from 2000 to 2006. The greatest decrease in incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease occurred in children less than 2 years of age declining from a high of 96.7/100,00…

Lack of associations between air emissions from sour-gas processing plants and beef cow-calf herd health and productivity in Alberta, Canada.

This paper describes a large-scale investigation into the effects of licensed air emissions from sour-gas processing plants on the health and productivity of beef cow-calf herds in the province of Alberta, Canada. In conjunction with a geographical information system, two atmospheric-dispersion models were used to assess historical exposures at 5726 beef cow-calf farm-sites from 1987 to 1990. We did secondary analyses of health, productivity, and management data, from a government-extension survey previously administered to beef cow-calf producers across the province. Statistical models (adjus…

Facilitators and barriers for implementing screening brief intervention and referral for health promotion in a rural hospital in Alberta: using consolidated framework for implementation research.

BACKGROUND: Screening, brief intervention, and referral (SBIR) is an evidence-based, comprehensive health promotion approach commonly implemented to reduce alcohol and substance use. Implementation research on SBIR demonstrate that patients find it acceptable, reduces hospital costs, and it is effective. However, SBIR implementation in hospital settings for multiple risk factors (fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, alcohol and tobacco use) is still emergent. More evidence is needed to guide SBIR implementation for multiple risk factors in hospital settings. OBJECTIVE: To explo
