Inadequate child supervision: The role of alcohol outlet density, parent drinking behaviors, and social support.

Supervisory neglect, or the failure of a caregiver to appropriately supervise a child, is one of the predominant types of neglectful behaviors, with alcohol use being considered a key antecedent to inadequate supervision of children. The current study builds on previous work by examining the role of parental drinking and alcohol outlet densities while controlling for caregiver and child characteristics. Data were obtained from 3,023 participants via a telephone survey from 50 cities throughout California. The telephone survey included items on neglectful parenting practices, drinking behaviors

Alcohol drinking, tobacco smoking and subtypes of haematological malignancy in the UK Million Women Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests associations of lower alcohol intake and higher tobacco consumption with increased risks of haematological malignancy. The prospective Million Women Study provides sufficient power for reliable estimates of subtype-specific associations in women. METHODS: Approximately 1.3 million middle-aged women were recruited in the United Kingdom during 1996-2001 and followed for death, emigration and cancer registration until 2009 (mean 10.3 years per woman); potential risk factors were assessed by questionnaire. Adjusted relative risks were estimated by Cox regres

Social impressions while drinking account for the relationship between alcohol-related problems and social anxiety.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear particularly vulnerable to experiencing alcohol-related problems; yet we know little about factors that may account for this relationship. One possibility is that socially anxious individuals hold beliefs about the impressions they make on others while drinking and these beliefs play an important role in their drinking behaviors. The present study used exploratory factor analysis among participants with clinically elevated social anxiety (n=166) to develop a measure, the Social Impressions while Drinking Scale (SIDS), to assess beliefs regarding

Pills and pints: risky drinking and alcohol-related harms among regular ecstasy users in Australia.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: A significant proportion of young Australians engage in risky alcohol consumption, and an increasing minority are regular ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) users. Risky alcohol use, alone or in combination with ecstasy, is associated with a range of acute and chronic health risks. The aim of this study was to document the incidence and some health-related correlates of alcohol use, and concurrent alcohol and ecstasy use, among a large, national sample of regular ecstasy users (REU) in Australia. DESIGN AND METHODS: National, cross-sectional surveys of REU in A

Maternal voluntary drinking in C57BL/6J mice: advancing a model for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) remain the most common preventable cause of behavioural abnormalities and cognitive deficits, yet little is known about the biological mechanisms involved in FASD pathology. Maternal voluntary ethanol consumption in mice may be a useful model for establishing the biological basis of moderate ethanol exposure phenotypes, which make up the majority of FASD cases. We have employed a two-bottle choice paradigm of maternal ethanol consumption throughout gestation and the early postnatal period in C57BL/6J mice. We assessed the efficacy of this model to produc

Toward prevention of alcohol exposed pregnancies: characteristics that relate to ineffective contraception and risky drinking.

Alcohol-exposed pregnancy is a leading cause of preventable birth defects in the United States. This paper describes the motivational patterns that relate to risky drinking and ineffective contraception, two behaviors that can result in alcohol-exposed pregnancy. As part of an intervention study aimed at reducing alcohol-exposed pregnancy 124 women were recruited and reported demographic characteristics, readiness to change, stages of change, drinking, contraception, and sexual behavior history. Our results showed the following. Drinking: A significant positive correlation was found between th

Drinking motives as mediators in the relation between personality disorder symptoms and alcohol use disorder.

Research shows high comorbidity between Cluster B Personality Disorders (PDs) and Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs). Studies of personality traits and alcohol use have identified coping and enhancement drinking motives as mediators of the relation among impulsivity, negative affectivity or affectivity instability, and alcohol use. To the extent that certain PDs reflect extreme expression of these traits, drinking motives were hypothesized to mediate the relation between PD symptoms and presence/absence of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). This hypothesis was tested using a series of cross-sectional an

Cognitive lifetime drinking history in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: some cases may be alcohol related.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the prevalence of significant alcohol intake in previously diagnosed nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) patients. METHODS: We measured current and total lifetime alcohol intake (TLAI) in biopsy-proven NAFL patients using the cognitive lifetime drinking history (CLDH), a computerized questionnaire. One nurse administered the CLDH without physician presence. Physicians took alcohol histories prior to any knowledge of this study. Advanced and nonadvanced fibrosis patients were tested. A single pathologist (ST) scored all biopsies (inflammation 0-6; fibrosis 0-4).

Effects of ALDH2 gene polymorphisms and alcohol-drinking behavior on micronuclei frequency in non-smokers.

Alcohol abuse is a serious health problem, leading to life-threatening damage to most of the important organ systems. Genotoxic damage is used as an early effect indicator in the surveillance of human exposure to genotoxic substances. Intra- and inter-individual variations of baseline frequencies of micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes of human populations have been reported previously. Polymorphisms in a few metabolic enzyme genes seem to account for a proportion of this variability, but the impact of specific genetic variants on MN frequencies has not yet been clarified. In 42 he

#Drink or #Drunk? An Experimental Study Investigating the Impact of Positive and Negative Alcohol Depictions in Ephemeral Social Media on Alcohol Cognitions.

Exposure to alcohol on social media has been linked to offline alcohol use. With the rise of ephemeral messages (e.g. Snapchat), social media users are exposed to a wider variety of alcohol depictions, ranging from negative to more positive ones. However, it remains unclear how exposure to differential alcohol depictions influences offline alcohol cognitions and who is most susceptible to them. We conducted an online between-subjects experiment manipulating the type of alcohol-related social media depictions (negative vs. positive vs. control) to investigate the impact on alcohol outcome expec

Anterior cingulate and medial prefrontal cortex alcohol cue reactivity varies as a function of drink preference in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Functional MRI visual cue reactivity studies have not considered that brain responses to various alcohol-containing beverage types may vary as a function of an individual's drinking patterns and preferences. This study tested whether the brain's reward system responds differently to visual cues associated with an individuals' most commonly consumed ("preferred") alcohol beverage compared with less commonly consumed ("non-preferred") alcohol beverages in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: Participants (N=70) with current AUD completed a standard visual alcohol cu

Progression from First Drink, First Intoxication, and Regular Drinking to Alcohol Use Disorder: A Comparison of African American and European American Youth.

BACKGROUND: Differences between African Americans (AAs) and European Americans (EAs) in the prevalence and age at onset of alcohol use and alcohol use disorder (AUD) have been documented, but distinctions in the timing of early stage transitions and contribution of various psychiatric and psychosocial risk factors to the progression from initiation to AUD have yet to be investigated. The current study characterized progression from alcohol use initiation-defined alternatively as first drink, first intoxication, and regular drinking onset-to AUD in AA and EA youth. METHODS: Psychiatric intervi

Glucose and fructose differently mediate alcohol cocktail drinking in female and male rats: interaction of glucose and alcohol on post-ingestive behavior.

Sweetened alcoholic beverages are thought to contribute to developing alcohol use disorder by increasing palatability. One monosaccharide, glucose, readily enters the brain more than fructose and directly impacts the activity of central neurons. The objective of this study is to determine the impact of glucose versus fructose on alcohol drinking patterns in female and male rats. Rats drank alcohol cocktails (1.25-10%) containing either glucose or fructose (10%) in 4-h sessions. We sought to parse orosensory effects from post-ingestive central effects by analyzing drinking microstructure. We co…

Estimating the transition from alcohol drinking onset to alcohol dependence within the first year of use in the United States, 2002-2019.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alcohol continues to be one of the most consumed substances worldwide, with unhealthy use on the rise. This study investigates the transition from the first full drink to the onset of alcohol dependence within 12 months among individuals with newly incident alcohol use in the United States. METHODS: Data come from the US National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (2002-2019), encompassing 67,135 participants, with assessments via confidential computer-assisted self-interviews. Newly incident drinkers had their first full drink no more than 12 months before evaluation.

Trace amine-associated receptor 1 agonists reduce alcohol drinking and differentially modulate dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens of alcohol preferring mice.

Current treatments for alcohol use disorder have limited efficacy underscoring the need for novel therapeutic targets. Trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) is a promising candidate due to its ability to act as a brake on dopaminergic transmission and alcohol consumption. However, both the relative efficacy of full and partial TAAR1 agonists in reducing alcohol-related behaviors and their underlying mechanisms of action remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the full agonist RO5166017 and the partial agonist RO5263397 on alcohol consumption using an intermittent access

The Novel μ-Opioid Receptor Antagonist GSK1521498 Decreases Both Alcohol Seeking and Drinking: Evidence from a New Preclinical Model of Alcohol Seeking.

Distinct environmental and conditioned stimuli influencing ethanol-associated appetitive and consummatory behaviors may jointly contribute to alcohol addiction. To develop an effective translational animal model that illuminates this interaction, daily seeking responses, maintained by alcohol-associated conditioned stimuli (CSs), need to be dissociated from alcohol drinking behavior. For this, we established a procedure whereby alcohol seeking maintained by alcohol-associated CSs is followed by a period during which rats have the opportunity to drink alcohol. This cue-controlled alcohol-seekin…
