Identification of plant defence genes in canola using Arabidopsis cDNA microarrays.

We report the identification of novel defence genes in canola by using a cDNA microarray from Arabidopsis. We examined changes that occur in the abundance of transcripts corresponding to 2375 Arabidopsis expressed sequence tags (selected for defence gene identification) following inoculation of canola plants with the fungal necrotrophic leaf pathogen, Alternaria brassicicola. Microarray data obtained from this cross-hybridisation experiment were compared to expression profiles previously obtained from the equivalent Arabidopsis experiment. Homology searches using a canola expressed sequence ta…

ERIC and REP-PCR banding patterns and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer of rDNA of Stemphylium solani isolates from cotton.

The genetic diversity of the Stemphylium solani isolates from cotton was assessed by Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC) and Repetitive Extragenic Palindromes (REP)-PCR fingerprinting. Twenty eight monosporic isolates of S. solani from cotton were used along with five isolates from tomato and one isolate of Alternaria macrospora from cotton for comparison. The dendrogram obtained revealed clear differences between the cotton and tomato isolates as well as between the tomato isolates from different geographic regions. The genetic relationships among S. solani isolates were al…

Utility of additional skin testing in "nonallergic" asthma.

It has been suggested that asthma almost always as an allergic basis. In this study we tried to determine whether an additional limited skin test panel would be useful in revealing hidden allergies in our "nonallergic" asthmatic patients. In 127 consecutive asthmatic adults, a survey panel of seven tests (rat, mouse, cockroach, Helminthosporium, Chaetomium, Pullularia, and Penicillium) was used in addition to our routine skin test panel (local pollens, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Hormodendrum, dog; and standardized cat, D. pteronyssinus, and D. farinae). On the basis of the routine test panel, 11…

The GacS-regulated sigma factor RpoS governs production of several factors involved in biocontrol activity of the rhizobacterium Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6.

Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 possesses many beneficial traits involved in biocontrol of plant diseases. In this paper, we examined the effect of a mutation in rpoS encoding a stress-related alternative sigma factor to better understand the regulation of these traits. Biochemical studies indicated that production of acyl homoserine lactones was altered and phenazine was increased in the P. chlororaphis O6 rpoS mutant. The rpoS mutation reduced hydrogen cyanide levels, but the rpoS mutant still displayed a level of in vitro antifungal activity against Fusarium graminearum and Alternaria alternata…

Disruption of cell wall and membrane integrity as antioomycete and antifungal mode of action by fusaric and 9,10-dehydrofusaric acids from endophytic fungus Fusarium lactis strain SME13-2.

AIMS: This study aimed to assess the mode of action of fusaric and 9,10-dehydrofusaric acids on cell respiration by measuring the hyphal oxy … vities, significantly inhibiting the radial growth of Phytophthora capsici, Pythium aphanidermatum, Alternaria alternata, and F. oxysporum. Additionally, they induced changes in colony morphology and negative effects on the ultrastructure of their hyphae. To date, the antimicrobial mode of action of fusaric acid and other alkylpicolinic acid derivatives is n …

Interfacial Engineering of Fatty Alcohol Polyoxyethylene Ether Enables Lesion-Targeted Deposition on Pathogen-Infected Apple Leaves.

Pathogen infection creates heterogeneous, rough leaf interfaces that hinder pesticide deposition at disease lesions. Here, we report an interfacial engineering strategy using fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether surfactants (AEO-4 to AEO-7) to achieve selective deposition on apple Alternaria blotch lesions. Through interfacial characterization (surface free energy, roughness, contact angle), high-speed droplet impact analysis, and energy dissipation modeling, we systematically evaluated the structure-activity relationship of AEO surfactants. Field validation was conducted under natural disease …

Species Diversity and Secondary Metabolites of Sarcophyton-Associated Marine Fungi.

Soft corals are widely distributed across the globe, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, with Sarcophyton being one of the most abundant genera. To date, there have been 50 species of identified Sarcophyton. These soft corals host a diverse range of marine fungi, which produce chemically diverse, bioactive secondary metabolites as part of their symbiotic nature with the soft coral hosts. The most prolific groups of compounds are terpenoids and indole alkaloids. Annually, there are more bio-active compounds being isolated and characterised. Thus, the importance of the metabolite compilation

Usefulness of Fungiflora Y to detect fungus in a frozen section of allergic mucin.

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a non-invasive disease characterized by pansinusitis with nasal polyps, with most causative agents being members of the dematiaceous fungi. Reported herein is the ninth Japanese case of allergic fungal sinusitis; an Alternaria species was culturally identified as the etiological agent. The present patient, a 32-year-old man, presented with multiple sinusitis and nasal polyps. Allergic mucin, which is a histological hallmark of this disease, was examined intraoperatively on frozen section. Although characteristic histology, including laminated masses of mucin and ag…

Invasive mold sinusitis: 17 cases in immunocompromised patients and review of the literature.

A 10-year retrospective analysis of invasive mold infections in hospitalized patients was performed to characterize the epidemiology and clinical features of invasive fungal sinusitis. Seventeen cases of invasive mold sinusitis were identified. Eleven cases were caused by Aspergillus flavus, three were caused by unspecified species, and one each was caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, Rhizopus species, and Alternaria species, respectively. Fifteen patients had hematologic malignancies, and two had end-stage liver disease. The most common presenting symptom was periorbital swelling (seven patients…

Mycosis of the Plantar Surface of Foot Owing to Nondermatophyte Mold Nodulisporium griseobrunneum Mimicking a Tinea Pedis.

Nondermatophyte molds (NDM) and dematiaceous molds are less frequently implicated as the etiological agents of tinea-like infections of the foot. Among the etiological agents, Hendersonula toruloidea (now, Nattrassia mangiferae), Scytalidium hyalinum, Alternaria species (spp.), and Fusarium spp. are infrequently associated with foot mycoses. Nodulisporium (N.) spp. is a mitosporic NDM, which has been implicated in human infections like cerebral phaeohyphomycosis and allergic fungal sinusitis. Here, we report N. griseobrunneum in a 9-year-old female with mycosis of the plantar surface of foot m…
