BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is a key element in treatment for opiate addiction; however concerns about the diversion o … gh drug users generally do not make use of illicit methadone regularly (every month). The degree of altruism involved in the exchange of methadone does not negate the potential role of this action in overdose or the possibility of criminal justice action against individuals. Doctors hold coexisting ethical duties to avoid causing deliberate harm to their patients (non-maleficence), to act in patients' best interests (beneficence), to respect patients' right to self-determination (autonomy) and to ensure that costs and benefits are fairly distributed among patients (justice). In the context of non-directed altruistic kidney donations (NDAKD), doctors' duties of autonomy and justice are in tension with those of non-maleficence and beneficence. This article examines these competing duties across three scenarios in which general practitioners (GPs) could promote NDAKD

INTRODUCTION: Compassion is central to moral and relational functioning, yet its determinants and systemic effects remain a subject of debate. The study linked to the current protocol will examine how fear of and openness to compassion from others are associated with well-being, emotional openness, and prosocial behavior. Additionally, it investigates how spirituality, religiosity, and secularism shape interpretations of compassion and altruism among working adults from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds.
METHODS: This research protocol refers to a future study, not started yet, that wi…

In an era of high need for humanitarian assistance, humanitarian aid workers face increased exposure to potentially traumatic events and, correspondingly, a greater risk of psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], and burnout). Less studied among humanitarian workers, however, are other known correlates of trauma-exposure: complex PTSD, risk-taking behaviours, and suicidality. The current study examined levels of trauma exposure and rates of trauma-related mental health disorders, risk-taking behaviour, and levels of suicidality among a sample (N

Compassion is closely associated with prosocial behavior. Although there is growing interest in developing strategies that cultivate compassion, most available strategies rely on effortful reflective processes. Furthermore, few studies have investigated neurocognitive mechanisms underlying compassion-dependent improvement of prosocial responses. We devised a novel implicit compassion promotion task that operates based on association learning and examined its prosocial effects in two independent experiments. In Experiment 1, healthy adults were assigned to either the compassion or control group

Third parties punish, sacrificing personal interests, offenders who violate either fairness or cooperation norms. This behavior is defined altruistic punishment and the degree of punishment typically increases with the severity of the norm violation. An opposite and apparently paradoxical behavior, namely anti-social punishment, is the tendency to spend own money to punish cooperative or fair behaviors. Previous fMRI studies correlated punishment behavior with increased activation of brain areas belonging to the reward system (e.g. the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, VMPFC), the mentalizing (e

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation improves survival and quality of life for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). However, there is a shortage of donated organs, resulting in long wait times and the potential for death before a donor is found. Non-directed (also called altruistic) living kidney donation is a growing type of donation; however, few studies have examined the values and motivation of individuals evaluated to be a non-directed donor.
OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explores the motivations and values of individuals evaluated for non-directed donation.

OBJECTIVE: Determining the current return rates of blood donors and their related factors.
BACKGROUND: Understanding the current pattern of blood donors' return rates and also their motivations will be beneficial when there is a need to implement measures to encourage new blood donors and retain existing ones.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 4200 blood donors in Shiraz, Iran, from 26 November 2010 to 26 December 2010. Blood donors' return rate and its related factors were investigated in a 7-year follow up.
RESULTS: The overall return rates of blood donors indicated a s

Chronic vulvar pain or discomfort for which no obvious aetiology can be found, i.e. vulvodynia, can affect up to 16% of women, and it may be found in girls and women across all age groups and ethnicities. Most patients describe it as burning, stinging, irritation, or rawness. The symptoms may spread to the whole vulva (generalised vulvodynia) or only to part of it, such as the clitoris (clitorodynia) or the vestibule of the vagina (vestibulodynia). This condition is often underreported and underrecognised by health care providers. Vulvodynia is a significant burden to society, the health care

Newborn infants are among those most severely affected by humanitarian crises. Aid organisations increasingly recognise the necessity to provide for the medical needs of newborns, however, this may generate distinctive ethical questions for those providing humanitarian medical care. Medical ethical approaches to neonatal care familiar in other settings may not be appropriate given the diversity and volatility of humanitarian disasters, and the extreme resource limitations commonly faced by humanitarian aid missions. In this paper, we first systematically review existing guidelines relating to

BACKGROUND: Germany is one of the countries where donor insemination (DI) is shrouded in secrecy and where, until recently, donors were assured of anonymity, and clinics were able to destroy documents after 10 years. For many years, preparation seminars for recipients have been conducted. Almost all participants of these seminars intend to disclose the nature of conception to their child, thus representing the beginning of a culture change. This study sought the views of donors regarding their willingness to be identified and therefore meet these expectations.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen of

The practice of medicine since Hippocrates, the father of medicine (460-377 BC) had the care of the patient in the core of its ideals which included scholarship; confidentiality, altruism and no harm doing. These ideals evolved from individual physician adoption to professional organization adoption. The medical profession used to have autonomy, prestige, and values centered on patient care. With societal changing values and the appearance of managed care and bioethics the medical profession lost its autonomy, prestige and self regulation. This led to widespread dissatisfaction among the profe…

Across these systems, the most commonly preferred options are easy access, assessment and feedback, declinations, and mandates with infection control measures as consequences for non-compliance.
