OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fine structural integrity of the hippocampus in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) using high-resolution T2 reversed (T2R) MRI.
METHODS: The authors performed detailed structural analysis of the hippocampus in 15 patients who had recovered from an episode of TGA and 150 randomly recruited normal volunteers across the adult age spectrum using high-resolution T2R MRI obtained on a 3.0-T system. An additional 100 subjects, with stroke or tumor, were similarly studied and served as disease controls.
RESULTS: The overall incidence of hippocampal cavities de

The pathogenesis and localization of neuronal dysfunction in transient global amnesia (TGA) is still disputed more than 40 years after the first description of this clinical entity. Previous studies have indicated that structural abnormality is rare in TGA. We report a case of TGA in a patient with acute ischemia in the body of right caudate nucleus. This provides evidence in support of an ischemic hypothesis as the possible etiology of TGA. The role of caudate nucleus in human memory is also reviewed.

Transient global amnesia has been associated with cerebral angiography performed with use of ionic agents. Nonionic contrast agents are associated with fewer complications, but complications do occur. The authors describe two patients who developed transient global amnesia after they underwent cerebral angiography with iopamidol. The precise pathophysiologic mechanism remains unclear, but the syndrome is by definition self-limited.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an uncommon disease characterized by sudden onset anterograde amnesia that typically improves within 24 hours. A 35-year-old woman presented with complete disruption of memory that had started on the previous day. She had fever and heart murmur and was diagnosed as having infective endocarditis with Staphylococcus lugdunensis, a coagulase-negative staphylococcus. Septic embolizations were found in the spleen and kidney on CT scan. The patient underwent aortic valve replacement. MRI susceptibility-weighted imaging showed a dotted low intensity area in the right

The pathophysiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is still uncertain. In the province of Ferrara (Fe-province), Italy, given the health organization and the alarming clinical features, the cases of TGA in the resident population virtually correspond to the resident outpatients diagnosed as TGA cases in the ER of the University Hospital of Ferrara. Thanks to this, a retrospective survey identified 35 (14 men, 21 women) first-ever TGA cases in the resident population in 2018 (346,975 inhabitants) giving a crude incidence rate of 10.10/100,000 (95% CI 7.00-14.00), 8.40/100,000 (95% CI 4.60-14

OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the most appropriate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diffusion protocol for the detection of lesions that cause transient global amnesia, in order to perform an accurate examination, as well as to determine the ideal time point after the onset of symptoms to perform the examination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated five patients with a diagnosis of transient global amnesia treated between 2012 and 2015. We analyzed demographic characteristics, clinical data, symptom onset, diffusion techniques, and radiological findings. Examination techniques included a standard d

The transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare amnesic syndrome that is characterized by an acute onset episode of an anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Its origin is still debated, but there is evidence for psychological factors involved in TGA. In neuroimaging, selective lesions in the CA1 field of the hippocampus can be detected, a region that is particularly involved in the processing of memory, stress and emotion. The aim of this study was to assess the role of psychological stress in TGA by studying the prevalence of stress related precipitating events and individual stress-related person

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia is characterized by the sudden development of dense anterograde amnesia, without alteration in level of consciousness and in the absence of focal neurologic deficits or seizure activity. Various precipitating causes have been reported in the medical literature.
OBJECTIVE: To present a literature-guided approach to the diagnosis and management of transient global amnesia in the Emergency Department (ED).
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 54-year-old woman who presented to the ED with an episode of acute memory loss.
CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, transien

We present a patient with transient global amnesia (TGA) whose diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) study showed a high-intensity signal in the left retrosplenium of the corpus callosum. In previous studies, lesions in the retrosplenium caused permanent but not transient global amnesia, called retrosplenial amnesia, by involving the thalamocortical portion of the Papez' circuit. This is the first report indicating that TGA can be associated with acute infarction only in the left retrosplenium of the corpus callosum.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) provides a unique perspective into the relationship between stress and memory formation. This study examines the clinical and diagnostic profiles of TGA and its mimics and reviews the current evidence to enhance understanding of its elusive pathophysiology.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 142 consecutive acute amnesia cases (January 2011 to July 2024) at a tertiary centre in Sydney. Cases were identified via diagnostic codes and confirmed through manual review. Patients were classified as either TGA or non-TGA according to established criteria.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA), which is described as short-term amnesia, may be influenced by some dietary components involved in brain function. The aim of the present study was to assess the connection between TGA and dietary intake of vitamin B12.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 258 people with TGA and 520 people without TGA in Sabzevar, Iran. All participants were screened for TGA (ICD-10 code: G45.4). A validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was utilized to estimate the dietary intake of vitamin B12. Different models of logistic regression were use

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of patients with acute transient global amnesia (TGA) using volumetric analysis to verify whether the brains of TGA patients have pre-existing structural abnormalities.
METHODS: We evaluated the brain MRI data from 87 TGA patients and 20 age- and sex-matched control subjects. We included brain MRIs obtained from TGA patients within 72 hours of symptom onset to verify the pre-existence of structural change. For voxel-based morphometric analyses, statistical parametric mapping was employed to analyze

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden and temporary memory impairment, while transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) represents amnestic attacks as the main manifestation of focal epilepsy with presumed temporal origin. We present a 48-year-old patient who experienced transient amnesia 10 weeks after right selective amygdalo-hippocampectomy for right temporal lobe epilepsy. Despite TEA being a plausible explanation for amnesia in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, no epileptiform discharges were found during the amnestic episode and key features indicative of TGA, including lo

We document a case of a transient global amnesia (TGA)-like syndrome following open water swimming. This case was atypical for TGA, in that symptoms were prolonged and ischaemic infarct was considered within the differential. MRI did not demonstrate any changes associated with acute ischaemia although did show a mild degree of small vessel change. With amnesia taking greater than 24 hours to resolve, we have labelled this case to be a TGA-like syndrome, provoked by the commonly reported TGA precipitant of cold water immersion. The possibility of a tiny, strategic infarct causing these symptoms
