Rickettsia felis: molecular characterization of a new member of the spotted fever group.

In this report, placement of Rickettsia felis in the spotted fever group (SFG) rather than the typhus group (TG) of Rickettsia is proposed. The organism, which was first observed in cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) by electron microscopy, has not yet been reported to have been cultivated reproducibly, thereby limiting the standard rickettsial typing by serological means. To overcome this challenge, several genes were selected as targets to be utilized for the classification of R. felis. DNA from cat fleas naturally infected with R. felis was amplified by PCR utilizing primer sets specific for

Barren female Strongyloides stercoralis from occult chronic infections are rejuvenated by transfer to parasite-naive recipient hosts and give rise to an autoinfective burst.

It is widely assumed that barren Strongyloides stercoralis occurring in chronically infected carriers can become fecund when immunity wanes. Evidence for this involves corticosteroid treatment of hosts harboring occult infections that subsequently return to patency. However, nematodes have ecdysteroid receptors, and it has been suggested that corticosteroids act directly on the parasite, inducing autoinfective development, rather than indirectly by suppressing host immunity. To test these competing concepts, barren females were recovered from donor dogs when the dogs' fecal examinations turned

Continuous-wave NMR imaging of solids.

Current pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance methods of imaging samples such as solids with short spin-spin relaxation times are restricted to use with T2 values longer than approximately 10 microseconds. In the present study a method of imaging ultra-short T2 samples using continuous- wave, swept-field NMR is presented that, in principle, will be able to overcome this restriction. The technique is identical to that used in continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance imaging of paramagnetic species and involves irradiating the sample continuously with a radiofrequency excitation in the presen

Species-specific reaction of liver ultrastructure in Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) and trout (Salmo gairdneri) after prolonged exposure to 4-chloroaniline.

The morphological alterations of hepatocytes of female zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio, and fingerling rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, following prolonged exposure to 0.04, 0.2 and 1 mg/L of 4-chloroaniline were investigated by means of light and electron microscopy. Changes in peroxisomes were visualized by cytochemical demonstration of catalase activity after incubation in the alkaline diaminobenzidine medium. The amount of storage products was illustrated by the silver impregnation technique. In a dose-dependent manner, the reaction of female zebrafish liver is characterized by a disturbance o

Disorder, Dynamics and Design: Ultrafast Pathways of Energy Deactivation in Eumelanin.

ConspectusEumelanin, the ubiquitous brown-black pigment, is renowned for its remarkable photoprotective properties across the natural world. Its broadband absorption across the UV-visible region enables the efficient capture of solar radiation, while its photoprotective efficiency arises primarily from the ultrafast deactivation of excited states. Multiple nonradiative decay pathways rapidly funnel electronic energy into harmless vibrational motion before reactive intermediates can accumulate. These functions are intimately connected to eumelanin's complex molecular and supramolecular organiza

Mitochondria-associated ferroptosis in ischemic stroke: Pathophysiological evolution, interorganelle crosstalk, and therapeutic targeting.

Ischemic stroke (IS) results from an acute interruption of cerebral blood flow and the ensuing collapse of energy metabolism. Although vascular recanalization can salvage the ischemic penumbra, its overall benefit remains constrained by a narrow therapeutic window and reperfusion injury. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, contributes to neuronal injury after IS and can amplify ischemia/reperfusion injury. By integrating energy metabolism, iron homeostasis, and redox balance, mitochondria can shape ferroptosis susceptibility within the ener

Synergistic "capture-and-catalysis" at a V2O3@NC/NHCS composite interface for the ultrasensitive electrochemical quantification of amaranth in complex matrices.

Amaranth (AM) is a widely used synthetic azo food colorant that poses severe toxicological risks upon excessive consumption, creating an urgent need for its ultra-sensitive detection. We report a high-performance electrochemical sensor based on the electrostatic co-aggregation of V2O3@NC and NHCS for the high-fidelity quantification of AM. A unique "capture-and-catalysis" synergistic mechanism governs this composite interface. Specifically, the highly porous NHCS framework provides exceptional capacity to capture and pre-concentrate target molecules while acting as a highly conductive "electro

Defect-mediated regulation of interfacial hydrophobic transport via cavitation thermodynamics.

The dynamical transport of reactants across the electric double layer is a pivotal yet poorly understood process in electrocatalysis, often overshadowed by the focus on surface adsorption energetics. In this work, we use ab initio molecular dynamics to elucidate the microscopic mechanism governing the hydrophobic solute penetration across the defect-mediated MoS2-water interface, based upon Lum-Chandler-Weeks theory. We show that the free-energy barriers associated with penetration into the Stern layer closely follow the local cavitation free-energy landscape, indicating that cavity formation

A Gear-Driven Plantar Energy Harvester with Integrated Self-Sensing for Human Locomotion Recognition.

Wearable electronic systems require compact and sustainable power sources together with reliable motion-sensing functions. This study presents a gear-driven plantar energy harvester that integrates biomechanical energy conversion with self-sensing locomotion recognition. The device converts low-frequency vertical foot loading into rotary motion through a wedge-lever transmission and amplifies the rotational speed using a multistage gear train with a total transmission ratio of 12. A one-way bearing enables directional power transmission during loading and prevents reverse rotation during recov

Ultrasound-activated Cu2-XSe/TiO2 heterostructured nanosonosensitizer enables coordinated induction of ferroptosis and cuproptosis for tumor immunotherapy.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive subtype characterized by the absence of actionable molecular targets, high metastatic propensity, and limited responsiveness to current immunotherapies. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors show promise, their clinical efficacy is constrained by low tumor immunogenicity and a highly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). This study reports a hyaluronic acid (HA)-functionalized TiO2@Cu2-XSe@HA nanosystem that promotes the coordinated induction of ferroptosis and cuproptosis, thereby enhancing sonodynamic immunotherapy against

Edaphic Gradients Reshape Microbial Microenclaves Assembly within Plastispheres.

Microplastics create unique microbial habitats known as plastispheres, functioning as embedded "micro-enclaves" in soil ecosystems. However, their assembly mechanisms and ecological implications remain poorly understood. Here, we sampled microplastics and adjacent soils at 27 urban wetland sites in Changsha, China, to sequence bacterial communities and assess their assembly processes and environmental drivers. Plastispheres selectively recruit soil bacteria, with bacterial richness representing only 51.6-69.3% of that in adjacent soils despite positive correlations with source communities. Imp

Electrochemical Gating of d-Band Engineering in Hierarchically Bridged Dual-Site Nanozymes for Synergistic Cascade Catalysis and Wearable Biosensing.

Cascade nanozymes for biosensing are fundamentally hampered by diffusion limitations and passive catalytic sites. Herein, we report a strategy of electrochemical gating of d-band engineering within a hierarchically bridged dual-site nanozyme (CuNCs@FeMOP) to achieve dynamic control over cascading catalysis. This architecture spatially confines the ascorbic acid oxidase-mimicking copper nanocluster (CuNC) core and the peroxidase-mimicking iron-based microporous organic polymer (FeMOP) shell, eliminating intermediate diffusion losses. More critically, synergistic electronic coupling via a histid

Defect-Engineered Fe-B MOFs with Intrinsic Neutral-pH Recognition for Accelerated Dual-Mode Detection of Staphylococcus aureus.

This study addresses the challenge of achieving sensitive and reliable Staphylococcus aureus detection in neutral-pH food matrices, where conventional boronate affinity ligands typically lose their binding efficiency. We developed a dual-mode colorimetric-electrochemical aptasensor by rationally designing a defect-engineered iron-boronic acid metal-organic framework (Fe-B MOF) as a high-affinity recognition and catalytic tag. By employing 2,5-dicarboxyphenylboronic acid as a Wulff-type ligand, we successfully induced structural defects and stabilized the active tetrahedral boronate configurati

Cascade Amplification of Photoimmunotherapy via Mitochondrial Dual-Ion Interference in a Bimetallic-Organic Framework.

Mitochondria-targeted photodynamic immunotherapy has emerged as a promising strategy that combines organelle-specific delivery with immunomodulation for cancer treatment. However, inadequate photosensitizer efficiency and insufficient targeting often limit its therapeutic efficacy. To systematically address these limitations, we developed a ZIF-90-based immunomodulatory prodrug exhibiting mitochondria-associated accumulation that enables tumor therapy by synergistically integrating metal ion interference with in situ photoimmunotherapy. This prodrug undergoes disassembly in the high-ATP tumor

A Host-Guest-Regulated Photocurrent Polarity Switching with a "Binary" Strategy for False-Positive-Free Microbial Detection of Staphylococcus aureus.

Herein, we report a supramolecular photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor based on a signal-polarity-inversion strategy, integrated with bacterial imprinting technology, for the ultrasensitive and selective detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The biosensor is constructed by embedding S. aureus within a bacterial-imprinted polymer (BIP) formed from a host-guest complex between 1,3,6,8-tetraethynylpyrene (TEPy) and cucurbit [7] uril (CB [7]). Remarkably, the interaction between the TEPy@4CB [7] complex and S. aureus triggers a unique photocurrent polarity switch from anodic to cathodic

Hollow RuO2 nanozymes sensitized by carbon dot sonosensitizers for sonodynamic/chemodynamic-activated immunotherapy.

Background: Regulating the morphology structure of sonosensitizers and nanozymes is crucial to improve sonodynamic and enzyme-mimic activities. Methods: We report for the first time the utilization of Cu2O nanospheres as the sacrificial templates for the synthesis of hollow RuO2 nanospheres (H-RuO2) for high-efficiency sonodynamic and chemodynamic therapy (SDT/CDT). We then utilized NIR phosphorescence carbon dots (CDs) as the auxiliary sonosensitizers to sensitize H-RuO2 for the construction of CD@H-RuO2 heterojunctions. Results: Compared with solid nanoparticles, nanosheets, and other struct

Probing Lattice-Oxygen Redox in Pt-WO3 Nanocrystals by Operando Spectroscopy: Bridging Surface Chemistry and Ethanol Sensing.

Understanding how lattice oxygen participates in gas sensing remains a challenge in metal-oxide chemistry. Here, we combine operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), operando Raman spectroscopy, ex situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), in situ X-ray diffraction, electrical measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the ethanol-sensing mechanism of Pt-loaded WO3 nanocrystals. Among the compositions, 1Pt-WO3 exhibits the highest ethanol response (S = 98.8 at 350°C), sixfold higher than pristine WO3. Reversible changes in

Topologically Structured PLLA Fibers With Stress Concentration Effects for Health Monitoring.

The development of flexible electronic devices necessitates materials with high piezoelectric performance. Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofiber-based piezoelectric membranes hold promise for self-powered health monitoring and tissue repair, yet their intrinsic piezoelectric performance remains insufficient for practical applications. Here, we develop a multi-path strategy to enhance the piezoelectric properties through crystallography and hierarchical design of PLLA fibers. We also demonstrate that incorporating high-aspect-ratio needle-like hydroxyapatite (HAp) into PLLA optimizes crystallini
