BACKGROUND: Among patients with a known peanut allergy, previous studies suggest low carrying rates of epinephrine auto-injectors (EAIs) and hesitancy to self-administer epinephrine upon anaphylaxis onset. METHODS: To investigate anaphylaxis among inpatients in the previous decade, we conducted a retrospective study of adult patients between 1992 and 2001 at a tertiary care center in Bangkok.

The highest rates of anaphylaxis in humans occur in early childhood associated with food allergy. Latex allergy, pharmaceutical drugs, and stinging insect reactions are important later in childhood, with drug allergy peaking in adult populations. Knowledge about diagnosis and therapy of anaphylaxis is critical, because a large percentage of subjects are not previously known to be at risk at the time of initial reactions. This article summarizes the basic clinical knowledge of anaphylaxis in childhood.

Hydatidosis can be a cause of anaphylaxis; it has been clearly established that the accidental rupture of a cyst during surgery can provoke severe anaphylactic reactions.
